Abstract

Examples of golf club heads and methods to manufacture golf club heads are generally described herein. In one example, a body portion of a golf club head may include a cavity having an opening and an interior structure defined by a wall portion and a base portion. A hosel portion may include an insert portion and a neck portion extending therefrom. The hosel portion may be attached to the body portion by an interference fit between the neck portion and the opening of the cavity. The insert portion may be received inside the cavity and may be spaced apart from the interior structure of the cavity. A space between the insert portion and the interior structure of the cavity may be partially or entirely filled with an adhesive to hold the hosel portion in place. Other examples may be described and claimed.

Claims (62)

1. A golf club head comprising:

a body portion having a toe portion, a heel portion, a front portion with a face portion, a rear portion, a top portion, and a sole portion;

a cavity at the top portion, the cavity having an opening and an interior structure defined by a wall portion connected to a base portion; and

a hosel portion including:

an insert portion;

a neck portion configured to receive a shaft;

a transition portion between the insert portion and the neck portion;

a first channel extending partially or entirely around the insert portion;

a second channel extending vertically across the insert portion and the transition portion; and

a third channel extending vertically across the insert portion and the transition portion,

wherein the hosel portion is engaged to the body portion by an interference fit between the transition portion and the wall portion at or proximate the opening of the cavity,

wherein the insert portion is located inside the cavity and is spaced apart from the interior structure of the cavity to define a space between the insert portion and the interior structure of the cavity,

wherein the space is partially or entirely filled with an adhesive to hold the hosel portion in place,

wherein the first channel is engaged to the adhesive to discourage vertical translation of the hosel portion within the cavity,

wherein the second and third channels are engaged to the adhesive to discourage lateral translation of the hosel portion within the cavity,

wherein a portion of the second channel extending across the transition portion has a depth that gradually shallows to zero or approximately zero toward the neck portion and terminates at or proximate the neck portion,

wherein the portion of the second channel extending across the transition portion extends beyond the opening of the cavity to provide a first outlet for excess adhesive and communicates with an exterior of the golf club head,

wherein a portion of the third channel extending across the transition portion has a depth that gradually shallows to zero or approximately zero toward the neck portion and terminates at or proximate the neck portion, and

wherein the portion of the third channel extending across the transition portion extends beyond the opening of the cavity to provide a second outlet for excess adhesive and communicates with an exterior of the golf club head.

2. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first channel has a uniform depth and a uniform width.

3. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein a width of the first channel is greater than half of a total length of the insert portion.

4. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the second and third channels have uniform widths.

5. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the second and third channels cooperate to bisect the first channel.

6. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the second and third channels are set deeper into the insert portion than the first channel.

7. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the second and third channels are connected across an end of the insert portion.

8. A golf club head comprising:

a body portion including a cavity having an opening and an interior structure defined by a wall portion and a base portion;

a hosel portion including:

an insert portion received inside the cavity;

a neck portion configured to receive a shaft;

a transition portion between the insert portion and the neck portion; and

one or more channels extending vertically across the insert portion and the transition portion; and

an adhesive partially or entirely filling a space inside the cavity,

wherein the transition portion tapers toward the insert portion and is configured to frictionally engage the wall portion of the cavity,

wherein the one or more channels are configured to engage the adhesive to discourage lateral translation of the hosel portion within the cavity,

wherein a portion of the one or more channels extending across the transition portion has a depth that gradually shallows to zero or approximately zero toward the neck portion and terminates at or proximate the neck portion to provide an outlet for excess adhesive, and

wherein the portion of the one or more channels extending across the transition portion extends beyond the opening of the cavity to provide an outlet for excess adhesive and communicates with an exterior of the golf club head.

9. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , further comprising one or more channels extending partially or entirely around the insert portion and configured to engage the adhesive to discourage vertical translation of the hosel portion within the cavity.

10. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the insert portion includes a chamfered end.

11. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein only the transition portion directly contacts the interior structure of the cavity.

12. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the one or more channels have uniform widths.

13. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the one or more channels includes two channels disposed opposite one another and connected to one another across an end of the insert portion.

14. A golf club head comprising:

a body portion with a cavity having an opening, a base, and a sidewall extending between the opening and the base;

a hosel portion, separate from the body portion, and partially received inside the cavity, the hosel portion having;

a neck portion configured to receive a shaft;

a transition portion extending downward from the neck portion and frictionally engaged to a portion of the sidewall located at the opening of the cavity,

an insert portion extending downward from the transition portion and suspended inside the cavity;

a first channel extending vertically across the insert portion and the transition portion, and

a second channel extending vertically across the insert portion and the transition portion; and

an adhesive inside the cavity and engaged to portions of the hosel portion suspended inside the cavity,

wherein the first channel and the second channel are configured to engage the adhesive to serve as a mechanical locking mechanism that discourages lateral translation of the hosel portion within the cavity,

wherein a portion of the first channel extending across the transition portion has a depth that gradually shallows to zero or approximately zero toward the neck portion and terminates at the neck portion,

wherein the portion of the first channel extending across the transition portion extends beyond the opening of the cavity to provide a first outlet for excess adhesive and communicates with an exterior of the golf club head,

wherein a portion of the second channel extending across the transition portion has a depth that gradually shallows to zero or approximately zero toward the neck portion and terminates at the neck portion, and

wherein the portion of the second channel extending across the transition portion extends beyond the opening of the cavity to provide a second outlet for excess adhesive and communicates with an exterior of the golf club head.

15. A golf club head as defined in claim 14 , further comprising a third channel extending partially or entirely around a portion of the hosel portion, wherein the third channel intersects the first channel and the second channel.

16. A golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein the insert portion includes a chamfered end.

17. A golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein only the transition portion directly contacts the sidewall of the cavity.

18. A golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein the first channel and the second channel have uniform width.

19. A golf club head as defined in claim 17 , wherein the insert portion is freely suspended inside the cavity and fails to directly contact the base and the sidewall of the cavity.

20. A golf club head as defined in claim 14 , wherein the first channel and the second channel are connected to one another across an end of the insert portion.
