Abstract

A topical application of nitric oxide may be provided by two separate containers, each containing an active component media to produce nitric oxide when combined. For example, a nitrite component media may be contained in one dispenser and an acidified component media may be contained in another dispenser. Each dispenser may dispense the respective component media as a foam. The resultant foams are combined to initiate the production of nitric oxide and the mixture of foams is applied topically to treat various skin disorders or wounds.

Claims (58)

1. A method for transdermal absorption of nitric oxide comprising:

providing a first medium comprising water and at least one nitrite reactant;

providing a second medium comprising water and at least one acidic reactant;

dispensing a portion of the first medium;

dispensing a portion of the second medium;

mixing the portion of the first medium and the portion of the second medium in a manner that produces a resultant medium that includes a plurality of bubbles, wherein the bubbles contain nitric oxide;

applying the resultant medium to a portion of skin so that a portion of the plurality of bubbles is next to the skin;

allowing the portion of the plurality of bubbles in the resultant medium to burst next to the skin; and

transferring by transdermal absorption the nitric oxide from the bubbles through the portion of skin; and

wherein the first and second mediums are gel mediums, lotion mediums, or serum mediums.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

allowing the resultant medium to remain on the portion of skin for at least three minutes; and

removing any remaining resultant medium from the portion of skin.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the resultant medium produces a nitric oxide to nitrogen dioxide ratio averaging between approximately 90% and 120% during the time the resultant medium remains on the portion of skin.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the resultant medium produces a nitric oxide to nitrogen dioxide ratio averaging between approximately 60% and 70% during the time the resultant medium remains on the portion of skin.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nitrite reactant is selected from the group consisting of sodium nitrite and potassium nitrite, and the acidic reactant is selected from the group consisting of citric acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, phosphoric acid, ascorbic acid, and hydrochloric acid.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first solution comprises approximately 100 mL of water and 10 g of sodium nitrite; and

the second solution comprises approximately 100 mL of water, 5 g of ascorbic acid, and 8 g of citric acid.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein:

the first solution further comprises approximately 2 g of sodium bicarbonate and 2 g of a cationic surfactant; and

the second solution further comprises approximately 6 g of the cationic surfactant.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

allowing the resultant medium to remain on the portion of skin for at least three minutes; and

removing any remaining resultant medium from the portion of skin.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the resultant medium produces a nitric oxide to nitrogen dioxide ratio averaging between approximately 90% and 120% during the time the resultant medium remains on the portion of skin.

10. A method for treating skin disorders comprising:

providing a first medium comprising water and at least one nitrite reactant;

providing a second medium comprising water and at least two acidic reactants;

dispensing a portion of the first medium;

dispensing a portion of the second medium;

mixing the portion of the first medium and the portion of the second medium in a manner that produces a resultant medium that includes a plurality of bubbles, wherein the bubbles contain nitric oxide;

applying the resultant medium to a portion of skin to be treated so that a first portion of the plurality of bubbles is near the portion of skin and a second portion of the plurality of bubbles is away from the portion of skin toward the outer surface of the resultant medium and acts as a barrier that keeps the nitric oxide from the bubbles nearer the portion of skin;

allowing the first portion of the plurality of bubbles in the resultant medium to burst next to skin; and

treating the skin disorder with the nitric oxide from the bubbles.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

allowing the resultant medium to remain on the portion of skin for at least three minutes; allowing the second portion of the plurality of bubbles to collapse toward the portion of skin; and

removing any remaining resultant medium from the portion of skin.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein a cotton swab is used for the step of applying the resultant medium to the portion of skin.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the resultant medium produces a nitric oxide to nitrogen dioxide ratio averaging between approximately 90% and 120% during the time the resultant medium remains on the portion of skin.

The method of claim 10 , wherein the nitrite reactant is selected from the group consisting of sodium nitrite and potassium nitrite, and the two acidic reactants are selected from the group consisting of citric acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, phosphoric acid, ascorbic acid, and hydrochloric acid.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first solution further comprises a salt buffer for regulating the reaction rate of nitric oxide production.

16. A method for effecting transdermal absorption of nitric oxide comprising:

providing a first medium comprising approximately 100 mL of water, 10 g of a nitrite reactant, and 2 g of a cationic surfactant;

providing a second medium comprising approximately 100 mL of water, 10 g of at least two acidic reactants, and 6 g of the cationic surfactant;

dispensing a portion of the first medium;

dispensing a portion of the second medium;

mixing the portion of the first medium and the portion of the second medium in a manner that produces a resultant medium that includes a plurality of bubbles, wherein the bubbles contain nitric oxide;

applying the resultant medium to a portion of skin so that a first portion of the plurality of bubbles is near the portion of skin and a second portion of the plurality of bubbles is away from the portion of skin toward the outer surface of the resultant medium and acts as a barrier that keeps the nitric oxide from the bubbles nearer the portion of skin;

allowing the first portion of the plurality of bubbles in the resultant medium to burst next to skin; and

transferring by transdermal absorption the nitric oxide from the bubbles through the portion of skin; and

wherein the first and second mediums are gel mediums, lotion mediums, or serum mediums.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising:

allowing the resultant medium to remain on the portion of skin for at least three minutes; allowing the second portion of the plurality of bubbles to collapse toward the portion of skin; and

removing any remaining resultant medium from the portion of skin.

The method of claim 17 , wherein the nitrite reactant is selected from the group consisting of sodium nitrite and potassium nitrite, and the two acidic reactants are selected from the group consisting of citric acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, phosphoric acid, ascorbic acid, and hydrochloric acid.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the resultant medium produces a nitric oxide to nitrogen dioxide ratio averaging between approximately 90% and 120% during the time the resultant medium remains on the portion of skin.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the resultant medium produces a nitric oxide to nitrogen dioxide ratio averaging between approximately 60% and 70% during the time the resultant medium remains on the portion of skin.
