Abstract

Systems and methods of repositioning teeth, using one or more appliances for installing on a patient's teeth are described. The appliance includes an arch shaped member; a plurality of spring members coupled to or provided on the arch shaped member; and a plurality of securing members for securing to a corresponding plurality of the patient's teeth on a one-to-one basis, the securing members being supported by the arch shaped member. The arch shaped member and the plurality of springs, together, comprise a two dimensional structure having a length dimension and a width dimension with varying widths along the length dimension, that is bent into a three dimensional structure.

Claims (34)

1. A method for forming an orthodontic appliance, the method comprising:

obtaining first data representing a first three-dimensional shape of a patient's jaw, wherein the first data includes a digital original tooth arrangement (OTA) of a patient's teeth;

obtaining second data corresponding to a second three-dimensional shape of the patient's jaw, wherein the second data includes a digital intermediate tooth arrangement (ITA) or a digital desired final tooth arrangement (FTA) of the patient's teeth;

obtaining a mandrel in the shape of a jaw comprising teeth and gingiva, the mandrel being custom made for a particular patient based at least in part on the first data and the second data;

obtaining an intermediate form of the orthodontic appliance, a shape of the intermediate form based at least in part on the first and/or second data;

conforming the intermediate form to the shape of the mandrel and securing the intermediate form thereto; and

shape setting the intermediate form while the intermediate form is secured to the mandrel by applying a heat treatment.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein obtaining the first data includes obtaining digital image data of the patient's upper and/or lower jaw.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising obtaining third data characterizing movement of the teeth between (a) the digital OTA and (b) the digital ITA or the digital FTA.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising obtaining a three-dimensional (3D) template of the orthodontic appliance based on the third data.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising converting the 3D template into a two-dimensional (2D) template.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising generating a digital intermediate form based on the 2D template.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising fabricating the intermediate form.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein obtaining the intermediate form comprises cutting the intermediate form from a sheet of material.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the heat treatment is carried out in at least one of an air furnace, a vacuum furnace, a salt bath, and a fluidized sand bed.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the intermediate form is not a single-diameter wire.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the intermediate form comprises a metal.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the intermediate form comprises a shape memory alloy.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein obtaining the mandrel comprises fabricating the mandrel via 3D printing.

14. A method for forming an orthodontic appliance, the method comprising:

providing a mandrel in the shape of a jaw including teeth and gingiva, the mandrel being custom made for a particular patient, wherein the shape of the mandrel is based at least in part on: (a) first data representing a first three-dimensional shape of a patient's jaw, wherein the first data includes a digital original tooth arrangement (OTA) of a patient's teeth, and (b) second data corresponding to a second three-dimensional shape of the patient's jaw, wherein the second data includes a digital intermediate tooth arrangement (ITA) or a digital desired final tooth arrangement (FTA) of the patient's teeth;

securing an intermediate form of the orthodontic appliance to the mandrel, wherein a design of the intermediate form is at least partially patient-specific, and wherein securing the intermediate form to the mandrel changes a shape of the intermediate form; and

applying a heat treatment to the intermediate form while the intermediate form is secured to the mandrel, thereby imparting a predetermined 3D shape to the intermediate form.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein obtaining the first data includes obtaining digital image data of the patient's upper and/or lower jaw.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising obtaining third data characterizing movement of the teeth between (a) the digital OTA and (b) the digital ITA or the digital FTA.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the intermediate form is not a single-diameter wire.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the intermediate form comprises a metal.

19. The method of claim 14 , wherein the intermediate form comprises a shape memory alloy.

20. A method for forming an orthodontic appliance, the method comprising:

receiving first data representing a patient's jaw, wherein the first data includes a digital original tooth arrangement (OTA) of a patient's teeth;

generating second data characterizing the patient's jaw, wherein the second data includes a digital intermediate tooth arrangement (ITA) or a digital desired final tooth arrangement (FTA) of the patient's teeth;

obtaining a mandrel for a jaw of the patient, wherein the mandrel is customized in shape and configuration for the patient and is based, at least in part, on the first data and the second data, and wherein a shape of the mandrel comprises teeth and gingiva;

bending an intermediate form of the orthodontic appliance to the shape of the mandrel and securing the intermediate form thereto, wherein a shape of the intermediate form is based at least in part on the first and/or second data; and

shape setting the intermediate form while the intermediate form is secured to the mandrel by applying a heat treatment.
