Abstract

A perforating gun may include a gun carrier extending in an axial direction and a tandem seal adapter (TSA). The gun carrier having a maximum outer carrier diameter. The TSA may include a first TSA region having a first TSA outer diameter, a second TSA region having a second TSA outer diameter, and a shoulder surface formed between an outer surface of the first TSA region and an outer surface of the second TSA region. The second TSA outer diameter may be larger than the first TSA outer diameter and smaller than the maximum outer carrier diameter. A portion of the gun carrier may abut with the shoulder surface.

Claims (75)

1. A wellbore tool string comprising:

a first wellbore tool comprising:

a first carrier extending in an axial direction; and

a first charge holder configured for receiving a first shaped charge, the first charge holder being housed within the first carrier; and a second wellbore tool comprising:

a second carrier extending in the axial direction; and

a second charge holder configured for receiving a second shaped charge, the second charge holder being housed within the second carrier; and

a tandem seal adapter (TSA) positioned between the first carrier and the second carrier, the TSA comprising:

a TSA body formed of a singular, monolithic piece of material;

a bore extending through the TSA body; and

a bulkhead provided within the bore and configured to provide electrical connectivity through the bore, the bulkhead comprising:

outer body provided within the bore and contacting the TSA body, wherein the outer body is non-conductive; and

a first electrical contact extending from a first end of the outer body and in contact with the outer body;

wherein the TSA body is sealingly engaged with the first carrier and the second carrier.

2. The wellbore tool string of claim 1 , wherein the TSA comprises:

a TSA maximum radius portion extending from the TSA body in a radial direction, the radial direction being perpendicular to the axial direction; wherein

a portion of the first carrier abuts the TSA maximum radius portion; and

a portion of the second carrier abuts the TSA maximum radius portion.

3. The wellbore tool string of claim 1 , wherein:

the first carrier comprises first threads;

the second carrier comprises second threads; and

the first threads are engaged with the second threads.

4. The wellbore tool string of claim 1 , wherein:

a first portion of the TSA is positioned inside the first carrier; and

a second portion of the TSA is positioned inside the second carrier.

5. The wellbore tool string of claim 1 , wherein the TSA comprises:

a first TSA region having a first TSA outer diameter;

a second TSA region having a second TSA outer diameter, the second TSA outer diameter being larger than the first TSA outer diameter;

a third TSA region having a third TSA outer diameter, the third TSA outer diameter being smaller than the second TSA outer diameter;

a first shoulder surface extending from an outer surface of the first TSA region to an outer surface of the second TSA region; and

a second shoulder surface extending from an outer surface of the third TSA region to the outer surface of the second TSA region; wherein

the second TSA region is disposed between the first TSA region and the third TSA region in the axial direction;

a portion of the first carrier abuts the first shoulder surface; and

a portion of the second carrier abuts the second shoulder surface.

6. The wellbore tool string of claim 1 , wherein the bulkhead further comprises:

a second electrical contact extending from a second end of the outer body;

wherein the first electrical contact is in electrical communication with the second electrical contact.

7. A wellbore tool string comprising:

a first wellbore tool comprising:

a first carrier extending in an axial direction; and

a first charge holder configured for receiving a first shaped charge, the first charge holder being housed within the first carrier; a second wellbore tool having a second maximum outer carrier diameter:

a second carrier extending in the axial direction; and

a second charge holder configured for receiving a second shaped charge, the second charge holder being housed within the second carrier; and

a tandem seal adapter (TSA), the TSA comprising:

a TSA body formed of a singular, monolithic piece of material;

a bore extending through the TSA body; and

a bulkhead provided within the bore and configured to provide electrical connectivity through the bore, the bulkhead comprising:

outer body provided within the bore and contacting the TSA body, wherein the outer body is non-conductive; and

a first electrical contact extending from a first end of the outer body and in contact with the outer body;

wherein the TSA body contacts the first carrier and the second carrier.

8. The wellbore tool string of claim 7 , wherein:

a first portion of the TSA is positioned inside the first carrier;

a second portion of the TSA is positioned inside the second carrier; and

the first carrier is coupled to the second carrier.

9. The wellbore tool string of claim 8 , wherein:

the first carrier comprises first threads;

the second carrier comprises second threads; and

the first threads are engaged with the second threads.

10. The wellbore tool string of claim 7 , further comprising:

a first seal element provided between the TSA and the first carrier in a radial direction, the radial direction being perpendicular to the axial direction; and

a second seal element provided between the TSA and the second carrier in the radial direction; wherein

wherein the TSA is connected to the first carrier via the first seal element; and

the TSA is connected to the second carrier via the second seal element.

11. The wellbore tool string of claim 7 , wherein the TSA comprises:

a first TSA region having a first TSA outer diameter;

a second TSA region having a second TSA outer diameter, the second TSA outer diameter being larger than the first TSA outer diameter;

a third TSA region having a third TSA outer diameter, the third TSA outer diameter being smaller than the second TSA outer diameter;

a first shoulder surface formed between an outer surface of the first TSA region and an outer surface of the second TSA region; and

a second shoulder surface formed between an outer surface of the third TSA region and an outer surface of the second TSA region;

wherein the second TSA region is disposed between the first TSA region and the third TSA region in the axial direction.

12. The wellbore tool string of claim 11 , wherein:

a portion of the first carrier abuts the first shoulder surface; and

a portion of the second carrier abuts the second shoulder surface.

13. The wellbore tool string of claim 7 , wherein the bulkhead further comprises:

a second electrical contact extending from a second end of the outer body;

wherein the first electrical contact is in electrical communication with the second electrical contact.
