Abstract

A printed energy storage device includes a first electrode, a second electrode, and a separator between the first and the second electrode. At least one of the first electrode, the second electrode, and the separator includes frustules, for example of diatoms. The frustules may have a uniform or substantially uniform property or attribute such as shape, dimension, and/or porosity. A property or attribute of the frustules can also be modified by applying or forming a surface modifying structure and/or material to a surface of the frustules. A membrane for an energy storage device includes frustules. An ink for a printed film includes frustules.

Claims (30)

1. A method of forming silver nanostructures on a frustule, the method comprising:

forming a silver seed layer on a surface of the frustule under a first set of process conditions; and

forming a layer of silver nanostructures on the silver seed layer under a second set of process conditions different from the first set of process conditions,

wherein the first and second sets of process conditions comprise a growth temperature, a pattern of heating, inclusion of a chemical additive during the nanostructure growth, or a combination thereof.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein forming the silver seed layer comprises forming the silver seed layer on interior surfaces of at least some of perforations of the frustule.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein forming the layer of silver nanostructures comprises forming the layer of silver nanostructures that substantially covers interior surfaces of at least some of perforations of the frustule.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the layer of silver nanostructures formed on the interior surfaces of at least some of the perforations has a thickness such that the perforations are not occluded by the layer of silver nanostructures.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the silver nanostructures comprise at least one of a nanowire, a nanoplate, a nanoparticle, a nanobelt, a nanodisk, a nanosphere, a nanostructure having a rosette shape, a nanoflake, a nanosheet or a nanotube.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein forming the silver seed layer comprises combining the frustule with a seed layer solution.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the seed layer solution comprises a first silver contributing component and a seed layer reducing agent.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein combining the frustule with the seed layer solution comprises mixing the frustule with the seed layer solution and applying a cyclic heating regimen to the mixed frustule and the seed layer solution.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein applying the cyclic heating regimen comprises applying a cyclic microwave power.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein applying the cyclic microwave power comprises alternating a microwave power between about 100 Watt and about 500 Watt.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the frustule has at least one perforation having a diameter of about 250 nanometers to about 350 nanometers.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the layer of silver nanostructures has a thickness of about 10 nanometers to about 500 nanometers.

13. A method of forming an electrode for an energy storage device, the method comprising:

forming silver nanostructures on surfaces of a plurality of frustules, the surfaces comprising a plurality of perforations;

forming a silver ink by combining the plurality of frustules and an ultraviolet light sensitive component; and

forming the electrode by applying the silver ink on a substrate.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein forming the electrode comprises printing the silver ink on the substrate to form a film.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein printing the silver ink to form the film comprises screen printing, roll-to-roll printing, or ink-jet printing.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein forming the electrode further comprises curing the film.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the film has a thickness of about 5 microns to about 15 microns after curing.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein at least one of the plurality of the perforations comprises a diameter of about 250 nanometers to about 350 nanometers.

19. The method of claim 13 , wherein the ultraviolet light sensitive component is sensitive to an optical radiation having a wavelength shorter than a dimension of at least one of the plurality of the perforations covered by the silver nanostructures.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein combining the plurality of frustules and the ultraviolet light sensitive component comprises combining the plurality of frustules with a photoinitiation synergist agent.

21. The method of claim 13 , wherein forming the silver nanostructures comprises:

forming a silver seed layer on surfaces of each of the frustules under a first set of process conditions; and

forming a layer of silver nanostructures on the silver seed layer under a second set of process conditions different from the first set of process conditions,

wherein the first and second sets of process conditions comprise a growth temperature, a pattern of heating, inclusion of a chemical additive during the nanostructure growth, or a combination thereof.
