Abstract

A fire apparatus includes a chassis, a front axle coupled to the chassis, a rear axle coupled to the chassis, a torque box coupled to the chassis, a pedestal coupled to the torque box, a ladder assembly coupled to the pedestal, and a stability assembly. The torque box has a front end and a rear end. The pedestal is positioned between the front end and the rear end of the torque box. The stability assembly includes a housing coupled to the chassis and the front end of the torque box, a pair of outriggers received within the housing, and a downrigger coupled to the rear end of the torque box. The pair of outriggers is selectively extendable laterally outward in opposing directions. The downrigger is selectively extendable downward.

Claims (85)

1. A fire apparatus comprising:

a chassis;

a front axle coupled to the chassis;

a rear axle coupled to the chassis;

a torque box coupled to the chassis, the torque box having a front end and a rear end;

a pedestal coupled to the torque box, the pedestal positioned between the front end and the rear end of the torque box;

a ladder assembly coupled to the pedestal, the ladder assembly including:

a base rail;

a hand rail;

a first lacing member and a second lacing member extending between the base rail and the hand rail, both the first lacing member and the second lacing member engaging the base rail at an interface, each of the first lacing member and the second lacing member defining a slot therein along at least a portion of a length thereof; and

a gusset extending through the slot in the first lacing member and the slot in the second lacing member and engaging the base rail to reinforce the interface; and

a stability assembly including:

a housing coupled to the chassis and the front end of the torque box;

a pair of outriggers received within the housing, the pair of outriggers selectively extendable laterally outward in opposing directions; and

a downrigger coupled to the rear end of the torque box rearward of the pedestal, the downrigger selectively extendable downward.

2. The fire apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the pair of outriggers is the only pair of outriggers of the fire apparatus.

3. The fire apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the torque box spans the rear axle.

4. The fire apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the rear axle is the only rear axle of the fire apparatus.

5. The fire apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the fire apparatus is a quint configuration fire apparatus that includes a water tank, a water pump, hose storage, and ground ladder storage.

6. The fire apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the ladder assembly is capable of extending to a horizontal reach of at least 90 feet while accommodating at least a 750 pound load applied to a distal end of the ladder assembly.

The fire apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the ladder assembly is capable of extending to the horizontal reach of at least 90 feet while accommodating at least the 750 pound load applied to the distal end of the ladder assembly in all operating orientations about a rotation axis of the ladder assembly.

8. The fire apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the ladder assembly is capable of extending to the horizontal reach of at least 100 feet while accommodating at least the 750 pound load applied to the distal end of the ladder assembly.

9. The fire apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the ladder assembly is capable of extending to a vertical reach of at least 95 feet.

10. The fire apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the chassis includes a pair of frame rails, and wherein the downrigger is positioned between the pair of frame rails along a longitudinal centerline defined by the chassis.

11. The fire apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the stability assembly includes at least one of:

a top support extending from the housing and disposed across a top surface of the torque box proximate the front end thereof; or

a bottom support extending from the housing and disposed across a bottom surface of the torque box such that the bottom support is positioned between the bottom surface and the chassis.

The fire apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the rear end of the torque box defines an opening, wherein the stability assembly includes (a) a plate coupled to the rear end of the torque box and extending across the opening and (b) a bracket coupled to the plate and extending rearward therefrom, and wherein the downrigger is coupled to the bracket.

13. The fire apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the torque box defines a first aperture, further comprising a support including:

a plate defining a second aperture, the plate positioned along and in contact with a top surface of the torque box such that the second aperture aligns with the first aperture;

a first leg extending from a first side of the plate and disposed along a first sidewall of the torque box; and

a second leg extending from an opposing second side of the plate and disposed along an opposing second sidewall of the torque box;

wherein the pedestal is received by and extends through the first aperture of the torque box and the second aperture of the support; and

wherein the first leg and the second leg are coupled to interfaces on the chassis.

14. The fire apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the ladder assembly includes:

a plurality of ladders sections including at least a first ladder section and a second ladder section; and

a slide pad positioned between the first ladder section and the second ladder section, the slide pad having a static, double-hump shaped profile.

15. The fire apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the base rail is a first base rail and the hand rail is a first hand rail, and wherein the ladder assembly includes:

a first truss assembly including:

the first base rail;

the first hand rail;

a first plurality of lacing members extending between the first base rail and the first hand rail, the first plurality of lacing members including the first lacing member and the second lacing member;

a second truss assembly including:

a second base rail;

a second hand rail;

a second plurality of lacing members extending between the second base rail and the second hand rail; and

a plurality of rungs extending between the first truss assembly and the second truss assembly;

wherein each of the first base rail and the second base rail includes:

a first tubular member having a first length; and

a second tubular member fixed to the first tubular member and having a second length less than the first length.

16. The fire apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the ladder assembly includes a basket including a door positioned at a front corner thereof and oriented at an angle when closed.

17. A vehicle comprising:

a chassis;

a torque box coupled to the chassis, the torque box having a front end and a rear end;

a ladder assembly including:

a base rail;

a hand rail;

a first lacing member and a second lacing member extending between the base rail and the hand rail, both the first lacing member and the second lacing member engaging the base rail at an interface, each of the first lacing member and the second lacing member defining a slot therein along at least a portion of a length thereof; and

a gusset extending through the slot in the first lacing member and the slot in the second lacing member and engaging the base rail to reinforce the interface;

an outrigger housing;

a first support extending from the outrigger housing and disposed along a top surface of the torque box at the front end of the torque box;

a second support extending from the outrigger housing and disposed along a bottom surface of the torque box at the front end of the torque box;

a pair of outriggers received within the outrigger housing, the pair of outriggers selectively extendable laterally outward in opposing directions;

a bracket coupled to the rear end of the torque box; and

a downrigger coupled to the bracket, the downrigger selectively extendable downward.

18. The fire apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the rear end of the torque box defines an opening, further comprising:

a plate coupled to the rear end of the torque box and extending across the opening;

a bracket coupled to the plate and extending rearward therefrom; and

a downrigger is coupled to the bracket.

19. A fire apparatus comprising:

a chassis;

a front axle coupled to the chassis;

a single rear axle coupled to the chassis;

a torque box coupled to the chassis, the torque box having a front end positioned in front of the single rear axle and a rear end positioned behind the single rear axle;

a pedestal coupled to the torque box, the pedestal positioned between the front end and the rear end of the torque box;

a ladder assembly coupled to the pedestal, the ladder assembly including:

a base rail;

a hand rail;

a first lacing member and a second lacing member extending between the base rail and the hand rail, both the first lacing member and the second lacing member engaging the base rail at an interface, each of the first lacing member and the second lacing member defining a slot therein along at least a portion of a length thereof; and

a gusset extending through the slot in the first lacing member and the slot in the second lacing member and engaging the base rail to reinforce the interface; and

a single outrigger assembly including:

an outrigger housing;

a pair of outriggers received within the outrigger housing, the pair of outriggers selectively extendable laterally outward in opposing directions;

a first support extending from the outrigger housing and disposed along a top surface of the torque box at the front end of the torque box; and

a second support extending from the outrigger housing and disposed along a bottom surface of the torque box at the front end of the torque box.
