Abstract

An apparatus for performing a vascular assessment is disclosed. The apparatus creates a three-dimensional model that is representative of a coronary vessel tree of a patient based on at least two angiographic images. The apparatus estimates first blood flow resistance values for points along at least some vascular segments of the coronary vessel tree using vascular geometrical dimensions of the three-dimensional model. The apparatus also estimates second blood flow resistance values for the points along the at least some vascular segments of the coronary vessel tree using a volume of a crown of the vascular segment downstream from the respective point. The apparatus determines fractional flow reserve (“FFR”) by calculating a ratio of the first blood flow resistance values and the second blood flow resistance values at each of the points along the at least some vascular segments of the coronary vessel tree.

Claims (26)

1. A method implemented by a system of one or more processors, the method comprising:

receiving a plurality of 2-D angiographic images comprising image data of a patient's coronary arteries over a number of cardiac cycles, wherein individual 2-D angiographic images are associated with individual cardiac phases of a plurality of cardiac phases, wherein the plurality of cardiac phases are included in a cardiac cycle, and wherein individual 2-D angiographic images are associated with individual cardiac phases based on a heart synchronization output recorded with a first time scale and a second time scale indicating times at which the 2-D angiographic images were captured;

selecting at least a first 2-D angiographic image and a second 2-D angiographic image from the plurality of 2-D angiographic images, wherein the first 2-D angiographic image and second 2-D angiographic image are associated with a same cardiac phase; and

building a 3-D vascular tree model of the patient's coronary arteries using the selected 2-D angiographic images.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first 2-D angiographic image and the second 2-D angiographic image are associated with an end of a diastole phase.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first 2-D angiographic image was taken at a first time and the second 2-D angiographic image was taken at a second time after the first time.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first 2-D angiographic image was taken from a first viewing angle and the second 2-D angiographic image was taken from a second viewing angle different from the first viewing angle.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein individual 2-D angiographic images are associated with individual cardiac phases based on an ECG signal.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising registering 2-D angiographic images taken from a first cardiac phase with 2-D angiographic images taken from a second cardiac phase.

7. A system comprising non-transitory computer readable media and one or more processors, wherein the non-transitory computer readable media stores instructions that when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

receive a plurality of 2-D angiographic images comprising image data of a patient's coronary arteries over a number of cardiac cycles, wherein individual 2-D angiographic images are associated with individual cardiac phases of a plurality of cardiac phases, wherein the plurality of cardiac phases are included in a cardiac cycle, and wherein individual 2-D angiographic images are associated with individual cardiac phases based on a heart synchronization output recorded with a first time scale and a second time scale indicating times at which the 2-D angiographic images were captured;

select at least a first 2-D angiographic image and a second 2-D angiographic image from the plurality of 2-D angiographic images, wherein the first 2-D angiographic image and second 2-D angiographic image are associated with a same cardiac phase; and

build a 3-D vascular tree model of the patient's coronary arteries using the selected 2-D angiographic images.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the first 2-D angiographic image and the second 2-D angiographic image are associated with an end of a diastole phase.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the first 2-D angiographic image was taken at a first time and the second 2-D angiographic image was taken at a second time after the first time.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the first 2-D angiographic image was taken from a first viewing angle and the second 2-D angiographic image was taken from a second viewing angle different from the first viewing angle.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein individual 2-D angiographic images are associated with individual cardiac phases based on an ECG signal.

12. The system of claim 7 , wherein the instructions further cause the one or more processors to register 2-D angiographic images taken from a first cardiac phase with 2-D angiographic images taken from a second cardiac phase.

13. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that when executed by a system of one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

receive a plurality of 2-D angiographic images comprising image data of a patient's coronary arteries over a number of cardiac cycles, wherein individual 2-D angiographic images are associated with individual cardiac phases of a plurality of cardiac phases, wherein the plurality of cardiac phases are included in a cardiac cycle, and wherein individual 2-D angiographic images are associated with individual cardiac phases based on a heart synchronization output recorded with a first time scale and a second time scale indicating times at which the 2-D angiographic images were captured;

select at least a first 2-D angiographic image and a second 2-D angiographic image from the plurality of 2-D angiographic images, wherein the first 2-D angiographic image and second 2-D angiographic image are associated with a same cardiac phase; and

build a 3-D vascular tree model of the patient's coronary arteries using the selected 2-D angiographic images.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the first 2-D angiographic image and the second 2-D angiographic image are associated with an end of a diastole phase.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the first 2-D angiographic image was taken at a first time and the second 2-D angiographic image was taken at a second time after the first time.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein individual 2-D angiographic images are associated with individual cardiac phases based on an ECG signal.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the instructions further cause the one or more processors to register 2-D angiographic images taken from a first cardiac phase with 2-D angiographic images taken from a second cardiac phase.
