Engineered skin equivalent, method of manufacture thereof and products derived therefrom
Disclosed herein are synthetic leathers, artificial epidermal layers, artificial dermal layers, layered structures, products produced therefrom and methods of producing the same.
1. A method of forming a tanned leather, wherein said method comprises:
a) forming a cell layer comprising an immortalized cell in contact with a scaffold,
i) wherein said scaffold comprises a polycaprolactone, a polyethylene, a polypropylene, a polyvinyl alcohol, a zein, an alginate, a starch, a cellulose, a cotton, an acetate, an acrylic, a fiber, a linen, a nylon, a rayon, a velvet, a modacrylic, an olefin polyester, a saran, a vinyon, a wool, a jute, a hemp, a bamboo, a flax, or any combination thereof, and
ii) wherein said cell layer comprises a collagen; and
b) tanning at least a portion of said collagen to generate said tanned leather.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said scaffold comprises a fiber.
3. The method of claim 2 , wherein said fiber comprises a latex, a vegetable, a polyamide, a modified cellulose, or any combination thereof.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said scaffold comprises said cellulose, wherein said cellulose comprises a rayon, a viscose, an acetate, a rayon acetate, or any combination thereof.
5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising forming said tanned leather into one or more of a watch strap, a belt, a packaging, a shoe, a boot, a footwear, a glove, a clothing, a luggage, a bag, a clutch, a purse, a backpack, a wallet, a saddle, a harness, a whip, or any combination thereof.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said scaffold comprises said bamboo.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein said scaffold comprises said polyethylene, wherein said polyethylene comprises a polyethylene terephthalate.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises removing at least a portion of said immortalized cell from said cell layer prior to said tanning.
9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises performing further processing on said cell layer.

The method of claim 9 , wherein said further processing comprises a member selected from the group consisting of: a preserving, a soaking, a bating, a pickling, a depickling, a thinning, a retanning, a lubricating, a crusting, a wetting, a sammying, a shaving, a rechroming, a neutralizing, a dyeing, a fatliquoring, a filling, a stripping, a stuffing, a whitening, a fixating, a setting, a drying, a conditioning, a milling, a staking, a buffing, a finishing, an oiling, a brushing, a padding, an impregnating, a spraying, a roller coating, a curtain coating, a polishing, a plating, an embossing, an ironing, a glazing, a tumbling, and any combination thereof.
11. The method of claim 1 , wherein said tanning comprises a vegetable tanning, a chrome tanning, an aldehyde tanning, a syntan tanning, a bacterial dyeing, or any combination thereof.
12. The method of claim 1 , wherein said collagen comprises a type I collagen, a type III collagen, or a combination thereof.
13. The method of claim 1 , wherein a thickness of said cell layer ranges from about 0.02 mm to about 5 mm.
14. The method of claim 1 , wherein said tanned leather further comprises a member selected from the group consisting of a keratin, an elastin, a gelatin, a proteoglycan, a dermatan sulfate proteoglycan, a glycosoaminoglycan, a fibronectin, a laminin, a dermatopontin, a lipid, a fatty acid, a carbohydrate, or any combination thereof.
15. The method of claim 1 , wherein said cell layer is cultured in vitro.
16. The method of claim 1 , wherein said scaffold further comprises a polylactic acid (PLA).
17. A composition comprising a cell layer comprising an isolated immortalized cell in contact with a scaffold
a) wherein said scaffold comprises a polycaprolactone, a polyethylene, a polypropylene, a polyvinyl alcohol, a zein, an alginate, a starch, a cellulose, a cotton, an acetate, an acrylic, a fiber, a linen, a nylon, a rayon, a velvet, a modacrylic, an olefin polyester, a saran, a vinyon, a wool, a jute, a hemp, a bamboo, a flax, or any combination thereof, and
b) wherein said cell layer comprises a collagen.
18. The composition of claim 17 , wherein said collagen comprises a type I collagen, a type III collagen, or a combination thereof.
19. The composition of claim 17 , wherein said composition further comprises an extracellular matrix.
20. The composition of claim 17 , wherein said scaffold further comprises a polylactic acid (PLA).
