Abstract

Methods and systems for gasifying coal are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, a representative coal gasification system can comprise (i) an injection well extending from a ground surface to an underground coal gasification (UCG) reaction region of a coal seam; (ii) a production well spaced apart from the injection well and extending from the ground surface to the UCG reaction region, and (iii) conduits each extending from the ground surface to areas of the coal seam. End portions of the conduits within the coal can be laterally peripheral to the UCG reaction region. The conduits are configured to deliver a primary fluid from the ground surface to the primary region, the injection well is configured to deliver an oxidant gas to the UCG reaction region, and the production well is configured to deliver the product gas from the UCG reaction region to the ground surface.

Claims (36)

1. A method for recovering and/or producing hydrogen, the method comprising:

causing an oxidant to be injected via an injection well to a reaction region of a coal seam, wherein the reaction region supports a reaction in which a product gas comprising hydrogen is produced, and wherein the coal seam has a hydrostatic reservoir pressure; and

causing a primary fluid to be injected, at an injection pressure, via conduits to an underground area of the coal seam, wherein

the injected primary fluid causes a secondary fluid comprising water and/or methane to be released from the underground area,

the underground area is laterally outward of the reaction region,

the underground area has a lithostatic pressure corresponding to a depth of the underground area,

the lithostatic pressure is higher than the hydrostatic reservoir pressure, and

the injection pressure is between the hydrostatic reservoir pressure and the lithostatic pressure.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the lithostatic pressure is at least 300 bar.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the injection pressure is approximately equal to the lithostatic pressure.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein causing the oxidant to be injected comprises causing the oxidant to be injected after causing the primary fluid to be injected.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising causing the product gas to be removed from the reaction region via a production well, wherein the product gas has a product pressure, and wherein the hydrostatic reservoir pressure is between the product pressure and the injection pressure.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the hydrostatic pressure is at least 150 bar.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the injected primary fluid causes the coal seam to form a barrier around the reaction region.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the injected primary fluid causes the coal seam to form a barrier or sequestration cap around the reaction region and/or above the coal seam.

9. A method for recovering and/or producing hydrogen, the method comprising:

causing an oxidant to be injected via an injection well to a reaction region of a coal seam, wherein the reaction region supports a reaction in which a product gas comprising hydrogen is produced, and wherein the coal seam has a hydrostatic reservoir pressure; and

causing a primary fluid to be injected, at an injection pressure, via conduits to an underground area of the coal seam, wherein

the underground area is laterally outward of the reaction region,

the underground area has a lithostatic pressure corresponding to a depth of the underground area,

the lithostatic pressure is higher than the hydrostatic reservoir pressure,

the injection pressure is between the hydrostatic reservoir pressure and the lithostatic pressure, and

the injected primary fluid adsorbs to the coal of the underground area.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the injection pressure is at least 160 bar.

11. A gasification method, comprising:

injecting a primary fluid via conduits to an underground area of a coal seam, wherein

the injected primary fluid causes a secondary fluid comprising water and/or methane to be released from the underground area,

the underground area is laterally outward of a reaction region that supports a reaction in which product gas comprising hydrogen is produced,

the coal seam has a hydrostatic pressure,

the underground area is at a depth below a ground surface, the depth corresponding to a lithostatic pressure, and

injecting comprises injecting the primary fluid at or above the lithostatic pressure.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the lithostatic pressure is at least 300 bar.

13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising extracting a product gas via a production well from the reaction region, wherein injecting the primary fluid is based in part on a concentration of the product gas and/or a flow rate of the product gas.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising injecting an oxidant via an injection well to the reaction region.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein injecting the primary fluid occurs before injecting the oxidant.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the reaction region comprises an underground coal gasification (UCG) reaction region, and wherein the primary fluid comprises water, carbon dioxide, and/or a supercritical fluid.
