Abstract

The present invention provides a magnetic multilayer pigment flake and a magnetic coating composition that are relatively safe for human health and the environment. The pigment flake includes one or more magnetic layers of a magnetic alloy and one or more dielectric layers of a dielectric material. The magnetic alloy is an iron-chromium alloy or an iron-chromium-aluminum alloy, having a substantially nickel-free composition. The coating composition includes a plurality of the pigment flakes disposed in a binder medium.

Claims (32)

1. A method comprising:

combining a plurality of multilayer pigment flakes with a binder medium to form a coating composition,

wherein the plurality of multilayer pigment flakes comprise one or more magnetic layers of a magnetic alloy and one or more dielectric layers;

wherein the magnetic alloy is an iron-chromium alloy or an iron-chromium-aluminum alloy that comprises from about 5 wt % to about 30 wt % chromium, from 0 wt % to about 18 wt % aluminum, and a balance of iron.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the magnetic coating composition is an intaglio ink.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the binder medium is curable by evaporation or by heating.

4. The magnetic coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the binder medium includes a UV curable resin.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the binder medium includes a resin chosen from alkyd resins, polyester resins, acrylic resins, polyurethane resins, vinyl resins, epoxy resins, styrene resins and melamine resins.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the iron-chromium alloy and the iron chromium-aluminum alloy have a substantially nickel free composition.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more layers of magnetic alloy is semi-transparent.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more dielectric layers is transparent.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more layers of magnetic alloy is a reflecting layer.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the multilayer pigment flakes have an average particle size of about 20 μm.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the binder medium includes an additive chosen from an organic solvent, water, or a cure retarder.

12. A method comprising:

printing a coating composition onto a substrate, the coating composition comprising a plurality of multilayer pigment flakes and a binder medium,

wherein the plurality of multilayer pigment flakes comprise one or more magnetic layers of a magnetic alloy and one or more dielectric layers;

wherein the magnetic alloy is an iron-chromium alloy or an iron-chromium-aluminum alloy that comprises from about 5 wt % to about 30 wt % chromium, from 0 wt % to about 18 wt % aluminum, and a balance of iron.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the substrate is currency, security documents or product packagings.

The method of claim 12 , wherein the binder medium has a first viscosity, the method further comprising heating the coating composition with microwave to form microcapsules of binder medium having a second viscosity surrounding the multilayer pigment flakes, the second viscosity being reduced compared to the first viscosity.

15. The method of claim 12 , further comprising curing the binder medium by a process chosen from evaporation, heating, or exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

The method of claim 12 , wherein the binder medium has a first viscosity, the method further comprising heating the coating composition with microwave radiation to form microcapsules of binder medium having a second viscosity surrounding the multilayer pigment flakes, the second viscosity being reduced compared to the first viscosity; and

exposing the coating composition to a magnetic field to align the multilayer pigment flakes within the microcapsules.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising forming an optical-effect image.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the aligned multilayer pigment flakes exhibit angle-dependent color travel.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein the substrate is a paper substrate.

20. A method comprising:

forming on a substrate a layer stack including one or more layers of a magnetic alloy, and one or more dielectric layers;

stripping the layer stack from the substrate;

grinding the layer stack to form a plurality of multilayer pigment flakes; and

combining the multilayer pigment flakes with a binder medium to form a coating composition,

wherein the magnetic alloy is an iron-chromium alloy or an iron-chromium-aluminum alloy that comprises from about 5 wt % to about 30 wt % chromium, from 0 wt % to about 18 wt % aluminum, and a balance of iron.
