Abstract

The present invention includes a spray drying disposable device for use in a spray drying system. The disposable has a spray drying head and a plasma drying chamber. The head has a spray dry nozzle assembly in fluid communication with the plasma source and the pressurized aerosol gas source. The pressurized gas flows in a vortex pattern that atomizes plasma droplets in the chamber. The head also includes a plenum has uniform air pressure of the drying gas. A baffle plate forms the floor of the plenum having drying gas jets that supply drying gas to the chamber. The atomized plasma droplets evaporate in the presence of the drying gas emitted from the jets to obtain dried plasma particles and humid air. A capture filter captures the dried plasma particles and allows the humid air to pass. The humid air passes through the gas outlet and the exhaust port.

Claims (14)

1. A method for spray drying plasma from an amount of donor plasma using a spray drying disposable device having a spray drying head and a drying chamber, for use in a spray drying system having a drying gas source providing a drying gas, a plasma source providing a plasma and a pressurized aerosol gas source providing a pressurized aerosol gas, the method comprises:

drying the amount of donor plasma in a time period, said drying step is performed with the spray drying disposable device comprising:

A) the spray drying head comprising:

i) a spray dry nozzle assembly in fluid communication with the plasma source and the pressurized aerosol gas source, wherein, when in use, the pressurized aerosol gas flows in a vortex pattern, wherein, when in use, the pressurized aerosol gas atomizes the plasma entering the drying chamber to obtain atomized plasma droplets;

ii) a drying gas inlet in communication with the drying gas source;

B) the drying chamber, attached to the spray drying head, wherein, when in use, atomized plasma droplets evaporate when contacting the drying gas emitted from the spray drying head to thereby obtain dried plasma particles and humid air;

C) a capture filter, residing in the drying chamber, wherein, when in use, the capture filter captures the dried plasma particles and allows the humid air to pass; and

D) a gas outlet, wherein said gas outlet is attached to an exhaust port of the spray drying system during operation, wherein, when in use, the humid air flows through the gas outlet wherein the time period for drying the donor plasma ranges from about 20 minutes to about 60 minutes.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the time period is about 20, 25, 30, 25, 45, 50, 55, or 60 minutes.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the amount of donor plasma being dried is between about 240 mL and about 280 mL.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein to dried plasma a residual moisture of less than about 2.5%.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the drying step includes rapid mixing the atomized plasma droplets with the drying gas.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the spray drying head further comprises a plenum wherein, when in use, the drying gas resides in the plenum with uniform air pressure.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the spray drying head further comprises a baffle plate forming the floor of the plenum, wherein the baffle plate comprises one or more drying gas jets, wherein the one or more drying gas jets provide drying gas to the drying chamber, wherein the nozzle assembly is at the baffle plate.
