Abstract

Embodiments of golf club heads, golf clubs, and methods to manufacture golf club heads and golf clubs are generally described herein. In one example, a golf club head may include a body portion, and an internal mass portion comprising a material having a greater density than a material of the body portion, a height in a top-to-sole direction, a depth in a front-to-back direction, and a width in a toe-to-heel direction. The distance between the internal mass portion and a toe portion edge is substantially less than the distance between the internal mass portion and a heel portion edge. The volume of the internal mass portion increases in a top-to-sole direction, and the height of the internal mass portion is greater than the width of the internal mass portion. Other examples and embodiments may be described and claimed.

Claims (49)

1. A golf club head comprising:

a body portion being hollow to define an interior cavity, the body portion comprising a toe portion with a toe portion edge, a heel portion with a heel portion edge, a front portion, a back portion with a back wall portion, a top portion with a top portion edge, and a sole portion with a sole portion edge;

a face portion coupled to the front portion to enclose the interior cavity;

a filler material in the interior cavity coupled to the face portion;

a first mass portion;

a second mass portion having a different configuration than the first mass portion;

a first port at or proximate to the toe portion edge and connected to the interior cavity;

a second port below a horizontal midplane of the body portion and connected to the interior cavity;

a third port inside the interior cavity; and

a cover portion coupled to the body portion to cover the first port,

wherein the second port is configured to receive the first mass portion,

wherein the third port is configured to receive the second mass portion,

wherein a distance between the first port and the toe portion edge is less than a distance between the second port and the toe portion edge, and

wherein a distance between the third port and the toe portion edge is less than a distance between the second port and the toe portion edge.

2. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the back wall portion comprises a recessed portion, wherein an opening of the first port is in the recessed portion, and wherein the recessed portion is configured to receive the cover portion.

3. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the cover portion comprises a different material than a material of the body portion, the material of the first mass portion, and the material of the second mass portion.

4. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first port is above the horizontal midplane.

5. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein a volume of the second mass portion increases in a top-to-sole direction.

6. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the second mass portion comprises a top portion and a bottom portion oriented relative to each other at an obtuse angle.

7. A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein a diameter of the second port is substantially greater than a diameter of the first port, and wherein the third port has a different shape than the first port and the second port.

8. A golf club head comprising:

a body portion comprising a toe portion with a toe portion edge, a heel portion with a heel portion edge, a front portion, a back portion with a back wall portion, a top portion with a top portion edge, and a sole portion with a sole portion edge;

a filler material in an interior cavity of the body portion;

an external mass portion;

an internal mass portion;

a recessed portion on the back wall portion at or proximate to the toe portion edge;

a first port connected to the interior cavity and having an opening in the recessed portion;

a second port below a horizontal midplane of the body portion and connected to the interior cavity, a distance between the second port and the toe portion edge being greater than a distance between the first port and the toe portion edge;

a third port inside the interior cavity, the third port having a different shape than the first port and the second port; and

a cover portion configured to fit inside the recessed portion to cover the opening of the first port;

wherein the third port is configured to receive the internal mass portion; and

wherein the second port is configured to receive the external mass portion.

9. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein an outer surface of the cover portion is configured to convey certain visual information to an individual viewing the body portion.

10. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the cover portion comprises a different material than a material of the body portion, the material of the external mass portion, and the material of the internal mass portion.

11. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein a distance between the first port and the top portion edge is less than a distance between the first port and the horizontal midplane.

12. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein a mass of the internal mass portion increases in a top-to-sole direction.

13. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein a shape of the internal mass portion is configured to correspond to a shape of the toe portion edge.

14. A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the external mass portion defines a visible portion of a center portion of the back wall portion below the horizontal midplane.

15. A golf club head comprising:

a body portion comprising an interior cavity, a toe portion with a toe portion edge, a heel portion with a heel portion edge, a front portion including a face portion, a back portion with a back wall portion, a top portion with a top portion edge, a sole portion with a sole portion edge, and a horizontal midplane between the top portion edge and the sole portion edge; and

an internal mass portion comprising a material having a greater density than a material of the body portion, a height in a top-to-sole direction, a depth in a front-to-back direction, and a width in a toe-to-heel direction;

wherein a distance between the internal mass portion and the toe portion edge is substantially less than a distance between the internal mass portion and the heel portion edge,

wherein a volume of the internal mass portion increases in a top-to-sole direction, and

wherein the height of the internal mass portion is greater than the width of the internal mass portion.

16. A golf club head as defined in claim 15 , wherein the height of the internal mass portion is greater than the depth of the internal mass portion.

17. A golf club head as defined in claim 15 , wherein the depth of the internal mass portion is greater than the width of the internal mass portion.

18. A golf club head as defined in claim 15 , wherein the internal mass portion comprises a top portion and a bottom portion oriented relative to each other at an obtuse angle.

19. A golf club head as defined in claim 15 further comprising a first port on the back wall portion, and a cover portion configured to cover the first port to close the first port, wherein the first port is connected to the interior cavity, and wherein the interior cavity is filled with a filler material from the first port.

20. A golf club head as defined in claim 15 further comprising a first port connected to the interior cavity and a second port having a substantially greater diameter than the first port and connected to the interior cavity, and wherein the interior cavity is filled with a filler material from the first port or the second port.
