Abstract

Many wireless receivers in 5G and 6G are expected to use DRX (discontinuous reception) to save power. What is lacking is an efficient procedure to inform the DRX users that they have an incoming message on hold at the base station. Therefore, a procedure is disclosed for the base station to assign each user device to a section and a position within that section. Then the base station can periodically broadcast a polling message including only those sections that have at least one waiting with a message on hold. In addition, each user device is assigned a single bit at a calculated position in the polling message, so that each DRX user can determine when it has a message on hold. In addition, the base station can assign an equally compact and efficient reply region for each ready user to request its message, thereby saving time and resources.

Claims (43)

1. A base station of a wireless network comprising one or more user devices, the base station comprising a processor configured to cause the base station to:

a) receive an incoming message addressed to a particular user device;

b) determine, according to a DRX (discontinuous reception) schedule of the particular user device, that the particular user device is unavailable;

c) broadcast a polling message indicating which user devices have messages on hold;

d) receiving a reply from the particular user device, the reply indicating that the particular user device is available to receive the incoming message; and

e) transmitting the incoming message to the particular user device.

2. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the incoming message is transmitted to the particular user device according to 5G or 6G technology.

The base station of claim 1 , wherein the polling message comprises a series of “0” bits and “1” bits at successive positions, each successive position associated with one of the respective user devices, each “1” bit indicating that the associated user device has a message on hold, and each “0” bit indicating that the associated user device does not have a message on hold.

4. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the polling message comprises one or more sections, each section associated with one or more user devices, such that each user device is associated with exactly one of the sections.

5. The base station of claim 4 , wherein:

a) the polling message includes every section that has one or more user devices with a message on hold; and

b) the polling message does not include any sections that have zero user devices with a message on hold.

6. The base station of claim 4 , wherein the polling message includes an index message, the index message indicating which sections have at least one user device with a message on hold.

7. The base station of claim 1 , wherein:

a) a particular region of a resource grid is assigned for uplink request message;

b) wherein the user devices that have a message on hold are permitted to transmit an uplink request message in the particular region, the uplink request message indicating which user device is ready to receive a message on hold.

8. The base station of claim 7 , wherein:

a) each user device that has a message on hold is assigned an assigned subcarrier in the particular region of the resource grid; and

b) wherein the assigned subcarrier is assigned according to an address of the user device.

9. A method for a particular user device of a wireless network to receive an incoming message, the method comprising:

a) receiving, from a base station of the wireless network, a message indicating a particular section number and a particular position number assigned to the particular user device;

b) receiving, from the base station, an index message indicting whether the particular section number includes at least one user device that has a message on hold; and

c) when the particular section number includes at least one user device that has a message on hold, then receiving, from the base station, a polling message indicating whether the particular position number of the particular section number corresponds to a user device that has a message on hold.

The method of claim 9 , further comprising, when the polling message indicates that the particular position number of the particular section number corresponds to a user device that has a message on hold, transmitting, to the base station, a request message requesting that the base station transmit the incoming message to the particular user device.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising receiving, from the base station, an allocation message indicating a particular region of a resource grid, wherein the particular user device can transmit an uplink reply message requesting the incoming message.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the uplink reply message comprises a signal on a single resource element, transmitted at an assigned symbol-time on an assigned subcarrier.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the index message and the polling message are transmitted periodically according to a predetermined schedule.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the index message and the polling message are modulated according to a binary modulation scheme comprising phase modulation with exactly two phase levels, or amplitude modulation with exactly two amplitude modulation levels.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the polling message is modulated according to a QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) modulation scheme, and wherein a demodulation reference signal is transmitted proximate to the polling message.

16. A method for a base station of a wireless network to transmit an incoming message to a user device of the wireless network, the method comprising:

a) receiving, from each user device, a message indicating whether the user device is a “DRX user” that intends to use DRX (discontinuous reception) or a “non-DRX user” that does not intend to use DRX; and

b) periodically transmitting a scheduled polling message indicating which of the DRX users has a message on hold.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising:

a) transmitting an incoming message to a particular non-DRX user;

b) failing to receive an acknowledgement from the particular non-DRX user;

c) storing the incoming message in a memory of the base station; and

d) indicating, in a next scheduled polling message, that the particular non-DRX user has a message on hold.

18. The method of claim 16 , further comprising assigning, to each user device of the wireless network, including the DRX users and the non-DRX users, a section and a position within the section, respectively.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the polling message indicates the section and the position of each DRX user that has a message on hold, and further indicates the section and the position of each non-DRX user that has a message on hold.

20. The method of claim 19 , further comprising:

a) upon receiving a request message from the particular non-DRX user, retransmitting the incoming message to the particular non-DRX user;

b) receiving an acknowledgement from the particular non-DRX user; and

c) erasing the incoming message from the memory of the base station.
