Abstract

Systems, methods and devices for nitric oxide generation are provided for use with various ventilation and/or medical devices and having a humidity control system associated therewith. In some embodiments, a system for generating nitric oxide comprises at least one pair of electrodes configured to generate a product gas containing nitric oxide from a reactant gas, a scrubber configured to remove nitric dioxide NO 2 from the product gas, and a humidity control device configured to alter a water content of at least one of the reactant gas and the product gas to control humidity within the system.

Claims (34)

1 . A system for generating nitric oxide comprising:

at least one plasma generator configured to generate a product gas containing nitric oxide from a reactant gas;

at least one controller configured to regulate an amount of nitric oxide in the product gas generated by the at least one plasma generator using one or more parameters as an input to the at least one controller; and

a humidity control device configured to blend a plurality of gases with different humidities to form the reactant gas with a humidity within a target humidity range.

2 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising one or more humidity sensors configured to communicate the humidity of the reactant gas with the at least one controller.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the humidity control device is configured to blend the plurality of gases such that the reactant gas has a known humidity level.

4 . The system of claim 3 , wherein one of the plurality of gases is configured to flow from a humidifier.

5 . The system of claim 3 , wherein one of the plurality of gases is configured to be ambient air.

6 . The system of claim 3 , further comprising a humidity control material configured to dry an incoming gas stream to create one of the plurality of gases, wherein the humidity control material comprises a desiccant, silica gels, or molecular sieves.

7 . The system of claim 3 , further comprising a water trap configured to manage water content of one of the plurality of gases.

8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the humidity control device includes one or more static mixers, the one or more static mixers being configured to shear gas flow through the humidity control device to create turbulence to increase interaction between flows of the plurality of gases.

9 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a mixer positioned downstream of the at least one plasma generator, the mixer configured to mix a flow of the product gas and a secondary gas flow to homogenize an inspired gas.

10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the mixer is a dynamic mixer.

11 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the mixer is a static mixer.

12 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the at least one controller, using information from the one or more humidity sensors, is configured to adjust a flow rate proportion between the plurality of gases to achieve the target humidity range of the reactant gas.

13 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the at least one controller, using information from the one or more humidity sensors, is configured is adjust a humidity level in one or more of flows of the plurality of gases to achieve the target humidity range of the reactant gas.

14 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the target humidity range of the reactant gas is in a range from 15 percent to 70 percent.

15 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a scrubber configured to remove nitrogen dioxide from the product gas.

16 . A system for generating nitric oxide comprising:

at least one plasma generator configured to generate a product gas containing nitric oxide from a reactant gas;

at least one controller configured to regulate an amount of nitric oxide in the product gas generated by the at least one plasma generator using one or more parameters as an input to the at least one controller;

a humidity control device configured to control a humidity of the reactant gas, the humidity control device configured to blend the reactant gas with a humid gas from a humidifier such that the reactant gas has a humidity in a target humidity range; and

one or more humidity sensors configured to communicate the humidity of the reactant gas with the at least one controller.

17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the at least one controller varies one or more parameters in the at least one plasma generator in response to the humidity of the reactant gas.

18 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the one or more parameters include one or more of plasma frequency, duration, energy level, and duty cycle.

19 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the at least one controller, using information from the one or more humidity sensors, is configured to adjust a flow rate proportion between the reactant gas and the humid gas to achieve the target humidity range of the reactant gas.

20 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the at least one controller, using information from the one or more humidity sensors, is configured to adjust a humidity level in one or more of flows of the reactant gas and the humid gas to achieve the target humidity range of the reactant gas.

21 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the target humidity range of the reactant gas is in a range from 15 percent to 70 percent.

22 . The system of claim 16 , further comprising a scrubber configured to remove nitrogen dioxide from the product gas.

23 . A system for generating nitric oxide comprising:

at least one plasma generator configured to generate a product gas containing nitric oxide from a reactant gas;

at least one controller configured to regulate an amount of nitric oxide in the product gas generated by the at least one plasma generator using one or more parameters as an input to the at least one controller;

a humidity control device configured to control a humidity of the reactant gas, the humidity control device configured to blend the reactant gas with a gas from a humidifier such that the reactant gas has a known humidity; and

one or more humidity sensors configured to communicate the humidity of the reactant gas with the at least one controller.
