Abstract

Systems, methods, and apparatus for acoustic inspection of a surface are described. An example system may include an inspection robot structured to traverse an inspection surface in a direction of travel. The inspection robot may include a payload having a plurality of arms, connected to the inspection robot, to rotate around respective ones of a plurality of axes while the inspection robot traverses the inspection surface, where each of the plurality of axes is in the direction of travel. A plurality of sleds may be connected to the plurality of arms, and a plurality of inspection sensors connected to the plurality of sleds. The plurality of inspection sensors may be spaced apart from each other at adjustable positions to inspect the inspection surface at an adjustable resolution.

wherein each of the plurality of axes is in the direction of travel;

a first plurality of sleds connected to the first plurality of arms; and

a first plurality of inspection sensors connected to the first plurality of sleds,

wherein the first plurality of inspection sensors are spaced apart from each other at adjustable positions to inspect the inspection surface at an adjustable resolution.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of inspection sensors includes a plurality of ultra-sonic (UT) sensors.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of arms are respectively connected to the first plurality of sleds with a pivot connection that provides a pivotal degree of freedom.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the first plurality of sleds includes a couplant chamber.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the adjustable positions of the first plurality of inspection sensors correspond to the adjustable resolution.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the inspection robot is structured to inspect the inspection surface at the adjustable resolution in a single inspection pass.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of arms are linearly spaced apart at the adjustable positions in a direction orthogonal to the direction of travel.

8. The system of claim 7 , further comprising:

a lockable translational degree of freedom structured to provide for adjusting the adjustable positions of each of the first plurality of arms.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the first plurality of inspection sensors is structured to interrogate the inspection surface and obtain interrogation data at the adjustable resolution therefrom.

10. The system of claim 9 , further comprising:

a controller including circuitry structured to control the first plurality of inspection sensors and to receive the interrogation data therefrom.

11. The system of claim 10 , further comprising:

a tether structured to provide a couplant to the inspection robot.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein:

the first payload includes a single couplant connection to the inspection robot;

the inspection robot is structured to supply the couplant from the tether to the single couplant connection through a couplant delivery line; and

the first payload is structured to supply the couplant from the single couplant connection through a plurality of final delivery lines,

wherein each of the plurality of final delivery lines has a smaller diameter than the couplant delivery line.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein:

the controller is remote from the inspection robot; and

the tether further includes a communication coupling structured to provide communication between the inspection robot and the controller sufficient for the controller to perform real-time processing of the interrogation data.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein:

the controller is structured to instruct the first plurality of inspection sensors to simultaneously interrogate the inspection surface and provide the interrogation data therefrom; and

the controller is structured to perform a multiplicity of thickness determinations of the inspection surface in real time.

15. The system of claim 10 , further comprising:

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the configuration adjustment includes adjusting the adjustable positions of the first plurality of inspection sensors by adjusting a positioning of at least one of the first plurality of arms to thereby inspect the inspection surface at a different adjustable resolution.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein the configuration adjustment includes at least one of:

enabling a trailing sensor of the inspection robot, wherein the trailing sensor is vertically displaced from the first plurality of inspection sensors; or

changing a speed of traverse of the inspection robot to change a resolution of the interrogation data.
