Adjustable reformer
An adjustable reformer for exercising is provided. The reformer includes a frame, a carriage slidably mounted to the horizontal frame, and at least one resistance element connected to the carriage. A cord connects the carriage to at least one lower guide and at least one upper guide. Pulling the cord causes movement of the carriage along the frame against resistance provided by the resistance element. The guides can be height adjustable. The reformer can include a cord-length adjustment system. Related methods of exercise are also provided.
1. A reformer comprising:
a) a horizontal frame having a first end and a second end spaced horizontally apart from the first end;
b) a carriage slidably mounted to the horizontal frame so as to reciprocate between the first and second ends;
c) at least one carriage spring connecting the carriage to the frame for biasing the carriage toward an equilibrium position between the first and second ends;
d) at least one pulley mounted proximate the first end of the frame;
e) a cord extending from the carriage through the at least one pulley and to a distal end of the cord for pulling by a user to urge translation of the carriage along the horizontal frame; and
f) a cord-length adjustment system mounted to the carriage for adjusting a length of the cord from the carriage to the distal end of the cord, the cord-length adjustment system receiving a proximal end of the cord opposite the distal end and including a clamp assembly operable to selectively clamp the cord to the carriage for fixing the length of the cord and selectively release the cord to permit retraction and extension of the cord relative to the carriage for adjustment of the length of the cord.
2. The reformer of claim 1 , wherein the clamp assembly includes a pair of clamp surfaces spaced apart by a gap through which the cord passes, at least one of the clamp surfaces movable toward the other one of the clamp surfaces to decrease the gap for gripping the cord between the clamp surfaces to clamp the cord to the carriage.
3. The reformer of claim 2 , wherein the clamp assembly includes a rope guide in alignment with the gap for receiving the cord.
4. The reformer of claim 2 , wherein the clamp surfaces comprise a pair of adjacent cams for gripping the cord therebetween.
5. The reformer of claim 1 , wherein the cord-length adjustment system is mounted to an underside of the carriage.
6. The reformer of claim 1 , wherein the clamp assembly includes a depressible clamp for selectively securing and releasing the cord.
7. The reformer of claim 6 , wherein the clamp assembly includes a tube adjacent the depressible clamp for receiving the cord.
8. The reformer of claim 1 , wherein the pulley is mounted to a post at the first end of the frame.
9. The reformer of claim 1 , wherein the cord-length adjustment system includes a reel rotatably mounted to the carriage and receiving the cord.
10. The reformer of claim 9 , wherein the cord-length adjustment system includes a reel spring urging rotation of the reel for retracting the cord onto the reel.
11. A carriage assembly for a reformer, comprising:
a) a carriage slidably mountable to a horizontal frame of the reformer so as to reciprocate horizontally between first and second ends of the horizontal frame;
b) at least one carriage spring attachable to the carriage for biasing the carriage toward an equilibrium position between the first and second ends; and
c) a cord-length adjustment system mounted to the carriage for adjusting a length of a cord extending from the carriage, through a pulley of the reformer, and to a distal end of the cord for pulling by a user to urge translation of the carriage along the horizontal frame, the cord-length adjustment system configured to receive a proximal end of the cord opposite the distal end and including a clamp assembly operable to selectively clamp the cord to the carriage for fixing the length of the cord and selectively release the cord to permit retraction and extension of the cord relative to the carriage for adjustment of the length of the cord.
12. The carriage assembly of claim 11 , wherein the clamp assembly includes a pair of clamp surfaces spaced apart by a gap through which the cord passes, at least one of the clamp surfaces movable toward the other one of the clamp surfaces to decrease the gap for gripping the cord between the clamp surfaces to clamp the cord to the carriage.
13. The carriage assembly of claim 12 , wherein the clamp assembly includes a rope guide in alignment with the gap for receiving the cord.
14. The carriage assembly of claim 12 , wherein the clamp surfaces comprise a pair of adjacent cams for gripping the cord therebetween.
15. The carriage assembly of claim 11 , wherein the cord-length adjustment system is mounted to an underside of the carriage.
16. The carriage assembly of claim 11 , wherein the clamp assembly includes a depressible clamp for selectively securing and releasing the cord.
17. The carriage assembly of claim 16 , wherein the clamp assembly includes a tube adjacent the depressible clamp for receiving the cord.
18. The carriage assembly of claim 11 , wherein the cord-length adjustment system includes a reel rotatably mounted to the carriage and receiving the cord.
19. The carriage assembly of claim 18 , wherein the cord-length adjustment system includes a reel spring urging rotation of the reel for urging retraction of the cord onto the reel.
20. The carriage assembly of claim 11 , wherein the carriage includes a platform and a plurality of rollers mounted to the platform for rolling engagement with the frame.
