Abstract

A tandem sub for a perforating gun assembly. The perforating gun assembly is used in a wellbore completion operation. The tandem sub first comprises a tubular body. The tubular body has a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and connection threads residing at each of the first and second ends. The tubular body has an internal bore, and tapered shoulders residing along the internal bore proximate each end. Each tapered shoulder defines an angle relative to the central axis of the internal bore. Further, each tapered shoulder forms a race dimensioned and configured to receive roller bearings. The roller bearings may be part of a grounding path. A cage secures the roller bearings against the race.

Claims (61)

1. A tandem sub for a perforating gun assembly, comprising:

a tubular body defining a first end, and a second end opposite the first end, with the tubular body having an internal bore extending from the first end to the second end;

connection threads placed at each of the first end and the second end;

a first tapered shoulder residing along the internal bore at the first end, with the first tapered shoulder defining an angle relative to a central axis of the internal bore; and

a plurality of first roller bearings disposed along the first tapered shoulder;

and wherein the first tapered shoulder forms a first race dimensioned and configured to engage the plurality of first roller bearings.

2. The tandem sub of claim 1 , further comprising:

a second tapered shoulder residing along the internal bore at the second end, with the second tapered shoulder also defining an angle relative to the central axis of the internal bore; and

a plurality of second roller bearings disposed along the second tapered shoulder;

and wherein the second tapered shoulder forms a second race also dimensioned and configured to engage the plurality of second roller bearings.

3. The tandem sub of claim 2 , wherein the angle of the first tapered shoulder is the same angle as the angle of the second tapered shoulder.

4. The tandem sub of claim 3 , further comprising:

a first cage securing the plurality of first roller bearings against the first race; and

a second cage securing the plurality of second roller bearings against the second race;

and wherein each of the first cage and the second cage defines a frusto-conical profile.

5. The tandem sub of claim 4 , wherein:

the roller bearings against the first race are integral to the tubular body; and

the roller bearings against the second race are also integral to the tubular body.

6. The tandem sub of claim 4 , further comprising:

a conductive pin residing within the internal bore of the tubular sub, wherein the conductive pin is in electrical communication with a signal line, and is configured to receive a detonation signal from the signal line;

and wherein:

the first roller bearings against the first race are disposed at an angle that corresponds with the angle of the first tapered shoulder; and

the second roller bearings against the second race are disposed at an angle that corresponds with the angle of the second tapered shoulder.

7. The tandem sub of claim 6 , wherein:

the first cage comprises a plurality of windows, with each window receiving a respective bearing member of the first roller bearings against the first race;

the second cage also comprises a plurality of windows, with each window receiving a respective bearing member of the second roller bearings against the second race; and

each of the first and the second bearing members extends partially through its respective window.

8. The tandem sub of claim 7 , wherein the tubular body is connected to a gun barrel housing.

9. The tandem sub of claim 8 , further comprising:

an electrically conductive ground member within or abutting the first roller bearings;

wherein the first roller bearings are configured to receive a grounding signal from the electrically conductive ground member, and transmit the grounding signal to the tubular body and to the gun barrel housing via physical contact with the tubular body.

10. A tandem sub for a perforating gun assembly, comprising:

a tubular body defining a first end, and a second end opposite the first end, with the tubular body having an internal bore extending from the first end to the second end;

connection threads placed at each of the first end and the second end;

a first profiled shoulder residing along the internal bore at the first end, with the first profiled shoulder positioned within the tubular body around a central axis of the internal bore; and

a first bearing having a plurality of rolling elements disposed along the first profiled shoulder;

and wherein the first profiled shoulder forms a first race dimensioned and configured to receive the plurality of rolling elements of the first bearing.

11. The tandem sub of claim 10 , further comprising:

a second profiled shoulder residing along the internal bore at the second end, with the second profiled shoulder also positioned within the tubular body around the central axis of the internal bore; and

a second bearing having a plurality of rolling elements disposed the second race;

and wherein the second profiled shoulder forms a second race dimensioned and configured to receive the plurality of rolling elements of the second bearing.

12. The tandem sub of claim 11 , wherein the geometry of the first profiled shoulder is the same as the geometry of the second profiled shoulder.

13. The tandem sub of claim 12 , further comprising:

a first cage securing the rolling elements of the first bearing against the first race; and

a second cage securing the rolling elements of the second bearing against the second race.

14. The tandem sub of claim 13 , wherein:

the rolling elements disposed along the first race are integral to the tubular body; and

the rolling elements disposed along the second race are also integral to the tubular body.

15. The tandem sub of claim 13 , further comprising:

a conductive pin residing within the internal bore of the tubular sub, wherein the conductive pin is in electrical communication with a signal line, and is configured to receive a detonation signal from the signal line;

and wherein:

the rolling elements disposed along the first race have an angle that corresponds with an angle of the first profiled shoulder; and

the rolling elements disposed along the second race have an angle that corresponds with an angle of the second tapered shoulder.

16. The tandem sub of claim 15 , wherein:

the first cage comprises a plurality of windows, with each window receiving a respective rolling element of the first bearing;

the second cage also comprises a plurality of windows, with each window receiving a respective rolling element of the second bearing; and

each of the rolling elements extends partially through its respective window.

17. The tandem sub of claim 16 , wherein the tubular body is connected to a gun barrel housing.

18. The tandem sub of claim 17 , further comprising:

an electrically conductive ground member within or abutting the first bearing;

wherein the first bearing is configured to receive a grounding signal from the electrically conductive ground member, and transmit the grounding signal to the tubular body and to the gun barrel housing via physical contact with the tubular body.
