Abstract

Claims (45)

1. An optical system configured for use with a wearable head device, the optical system comprising:

a first combiner, the first combiner adapted to visually present image content such that a surrounding environment is visible to a user of the wearable head device through the first combiner while the image content is presented, wherein the first combiner comprises a first surface having a reflectivity that is adjustable;

one or more light sources, the one or more light sources adapted to project image light onto the first combiner,

a first camera configured to capture a portion of first ambient light reflected by the first combiner; and

a processor configured to:

determine whether a brightness of the first ambient light exceeds a first threshold value,

in accordance with a determination that the brightness of the first ambient light exceeds the first threshold value, increase the reflectivity of the first surface of the first combiner,

in accordance with a determination that the brightness of the first ambient light does not exceed the first threshold value, forgo increasing the reflectivity of the first surface of the first combiner,

wherein the first combiner is adapted to reflect, with the reflectivity and toward a first eye of a user, a first portion of the image light projected by the one or more light sources.

2. The optical system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first polarizer disposed between the first combiner and the first camera, the first polarizer configured to receive the portion of the first ambient light.

3. The optical system of claim 2 , wherein,

the first polarizer includes a first antireflection coating and is further configured to absorb the portion of the first ambient light.

4. The optical system of claim 3 , wherein the first camera comprises an infrared camera.

5. The optical system of claim 4 , wherein the portion of the first ambient light comprises infrared light and the first camera is configured to detect the infrared light.

6. The optical system of claim 5 , wherein the first polarizer is further configured to transmit the infrared light.

7. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein,

the first camera is configured to remain fixed relative to the first eye of the user and is further configured to capture light from a field of view associated with the first eye of the user.

The optical system of claim 1 , further comprising a transmissive display, the transmissive display comprising a switching mirror configured to adjust an effective reflectivity of the transmissive display, wherein the effective reflectivity is adjustable by adjusting a rate at which the switching mirror switches between a first state and a second state.

9. The optical system of claim 8 , wherein:

the transmissive display comprises a curved display having a first curvature, and

the processor is further configured to provide display data associated with an image and to adjust the display data to compensate for an effect of the first curvature associated with the curved display on the reflected portion of the projected light.

10. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein a polarization state of the first portion of ambient light differs from a polarization state of the first portion of the image light.

11. The optical system of claim 5 , wherein the combiner comprises a hot mirror.

12. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine whether the brightness of the first ambient light is below a second threshold value,

in accordance with a determination that the brightness of the first ambient light is below the second threshold value, increase a transmissivity of a second surface of the first combiner,

in accordance with a determination that the brightness of the ambient light is not below the second threshold value, forgo increasing the transmissivity of the second surface of the first combiner.

13. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine a difference between a brightness of the first portion of the image light received by a first surface of the first combiner and a brightness of the first ambient light received by a second surface of the first combiner;

adjust one or more of a reflectivity of the first surface of the first combiner and a transmissivity of the second surface of the first combiner based on the determined difference.

14. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

provide display data associated with an image;

identify, based on a captured image, a first position of an object in a surrounding environment;

identify a second position of the object;

adjust the display data based on a difference between the first position and the second position; and

adjust, based on the difference between the first position and the second position, an optical characteristic of the optical system.

15. The optical system of claim 14 , wherein adjusting the display data comprises changing a position of the image light.

16. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

provide display data associated with an image;

determine whether the brightness of the first ambient light exceeds a third threshold value,

adjust the display data to increase a brightness of the image light in accordance with a determination that the brightness of the first ambient light exceeds the third threshold value.

17. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein:

the first surface of the first combiner has an optical flatness less than 20 times a wavelength of visible light.

18. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein a field of view of the first camera is coaxially aligned with a display field of view provided by the image light.
