Abstract

The present disclosure generally relates to materials, processes, generators, and/or systems, for generating radioisotope. The present disclosure also generally relates to ceramic materials comprising radioisotope suitable for use in a radioisotope generator. The present disclosure also generally relates to processes, generators and/or systems, for producing and capturing radioisotope. The present disclosure also generally relates to the preparation of radioisotope solutions for use in radiopharmacy and/or other clinical applications.

Claims (22)

1 . A substrate for a radioisotope generator, the substrate comprising:

a metal oxide substrate;

and

an immobilized parent radioisotope bound on or near a surface of the metal oxide substrate;

wherein the metal oxide substrate is porous, has a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of less than about 200 m 2 /g when measured using standard ASTM C1274, and wherein the metal oxide is selected from the group consisting of tantalum oxide and zirconium oxide, and

wherein the parent radioisotope is thorium-228 ( 228 Th).

2 . The substrate of claim 1 , wherein the inert metal oxide layer substrate has a roughened surface.

3 . The substrate of claim 2 , wherein the roughened surface has a peak count of less than 18 peaks/mm.

4 . The substrate of claim 2 , wherein the roughened surface comprises a texture having angular patterns.

5 . The substrate of claim 2 , wherein the roughened surface has a surface roughness between about 5 μm and about 150 μm.

6 . The substrate of claim 1 , wherein the inert metal oxide layer substrate is configured to immobilize the parent radioisotope in an amount effective to provide an activity between 10 MBq/cm 2 and 1000 MBq/cm 2 .

7 . The substrate of claim 1 , wherein the inert metal oxide is tantalum oxide.

8 . The substrate of claim 1 , wherein the metal oxide substrate is disk-shaped and has a diameter of about 30 mm.

9 . The substrate of claim 1 , wherein the metal oxide substrate has a ratio of a length to a width of greater than 2.0:1.

10 . The substrate of claim 1 , wherein the metal oxide is zirconium oxide.

11 . A radioisotope generator comprising:

a metal oxide substrate and an immobilized parent radioisotope bound on or near a surface of the metal oxide substrate, wherein the metal oxide substrate is porous, has a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of less than about 200 m 2 /g when measured using standard ASTM C1274, and wherein the metal oxide is selected from the group consisting of tantalum oxide and zirconium oxide,

wherein the metal oxide substrate is configured to be housed within a collection chamber and the parent radioisotope is thorium-228 ( 228 Th).

12 . The radioisotope generator of claim 11 , wherein the metal oxide is tantalum oxide.

13 . The radioisotope generator of claim 12 , wherein the parent radioisotope permits emanation of gaseous radon-220 ( 220 Rn) produced by the radioactive decay of the 228 Th into the collection chamber such that lead-212 ( 212 Pb) is produced by the radioactive decay of the gaseous 220 Rn and the 212 Pb collects on a surface within the collection chamber.

14 . The radioisotope generator of claim 11 , wherein the metal oxide is zirconium oxide.

15 . The radioisotope generator of claim 14 , wherein the parent radioisotope and permits emanation of gaseous 220 Rn produced by the radioactive decay of the 228 Th into the collection chamber such that 212 Pb is produced by the radioactive decay of the gaseous 220 Rn and the 212 Pb collects on a surface within the collection chamber.
