Abstract

Thermally formed thermoplastic articles can be protected from stress cracking in the presence of stress cracking promoting compounds by forming a shaped article comprising a thermoplastic and a liquid hydrocarbon oil composition. We have found that the liquid hydrocarbon oil composition prevents the stress cracking promoting materials from interacting with the polymeric structure of the stressed container to prevent or inhibit stress cracking in such materials. The methods and compositions of the invention are particularly useful in preventing stress cracking in polyethylene terephthalate beverage containers during bottling operations during which the bottle is contacted with aqueous and non-aqueous materials such as cleaners and lubricants that can interact with the polyester to cause stress cracking particularly in the container base. A process for lubricating a container, such as a beverage container, or a conveyor for containers, by applying to the container or conveyor, a thin continuous, substantially non-dripping layer of a liquid lubricant. The process provides many advantages compared to the use of a conventional dilute aqueous lubricant.

Claims (60)

1. A conveyor and container lubricant composition comprising:

about 0.05 to about 12 wt-% silicone material; and

about 30 to about 99.95 wt-% water miscible lubricant.

2. The lubricant composition of claim 1 , comprising:

about 0.5 to about 8 wt-% silicone material; and

about 50 to about 90 wt-% water-miscible lubricant; and

further comprising about 2 to about 49.5 wt-% of water or hydrophilic diluent.

3. The lubricant composition of claim 2 , comprising:

about 0.8 to about 4 wt-% silicone material; and

about 65 to about 85 wt-% water-miscible lubricant; and

further comprising about 11 to about 34.2 wt-% of water or hydrophilic diluent.

4. The lubricant composition of claim 1 , wherein:

the silicone material comprises silicone emulsion, finely divided silicone powder, or silicone surfactant; and

the water-miscible lubricant comprises a hydroxy-containing compound, polyalkylene glycol, copolymer of ethylene and propylene oxides, sorbitan ester, or derivative thereof.

5. The lubricant composition of claim 1 , wherein:

the silicone material comprises silicone emulsion, finely divided silicone powder, or silicone surfactant; and

the water-miscible lubricant comprises a phosphate ester, amine, or derivative thereof.

6. The lubricant composition of claim 1 , comprising a silicone emulsion.

7. The lubricant composition of claim 6 , wherein the mixture is substantially free of surfactants aside from those that may be employed to form the silicone emulsion.

8. The lubricant of claim 1 , wherein the silicone material comprises a polymer containing silicone.

9. The lubricant of claim 8 , wherein the polymer comprises a polydimethyl siloxane, a polyalkyl siloxane, a polyphenyl siloxane, or a mixture thereof.

10. A method of lubricating a container or conveyor for the container, comprising:

applying to at least a portion of a surface of the container or cenveyor a conveyor and container lubricant composition comprising:

a water-miscible silicone material; and

a water-miscible lubricant.

11. A conveyor lubricant composition comprising:

about 0.8 to about 4 wt % oleophilic lubricating material; and

about 30 to about 99.95 wt % of hydrophilic lubricant material.

12. The composition of claim 11 , wherein the hydrophilic lubricant comprises:

up to about 69.95 wt % of a water diluent; and

up to about 85 wt % of a hydrophilic lubricant.

13. The composition of claim 12 , comprising an unstable mixture of the oleophilic lubricating material and the hydrophilic lubricating material.

14. The composition of claim 13 , wherein when the composition is applied to a surface, the oleophilic lubricating material forms a film on the hydrophilic lubricating material, thereby providing a water-repelling lubricating layer having reduced water sensitivity.

15. The composition of claim 11 , comprising about 65 to about 85 wt % of the hydrophilic lubricant; and

further comprising about 11 to about 34.2 wt % of water diluent.

16. The composition of claim 11 , wherein the composition is substantially free of surfactants that cause stress cracking in PET.

17. The composition of claim 11 , comprising about 0.8 to about 4 wt % of an oleophilic silicone lubricant.

18. The composition of claim 17 , wherein:

the oleophilic silicone lubricant comprises a silicone fluid emulsion, finely divided silicone powder, or silicone surfactant; and

the hydrophilic lubricant comprises a hydroxy-containing compound, polyalkylene glycol, copolymer of ethylene and propylene oxides, sorbitan ester, or derivative thereof.

19. The composition of claim 17 , wherein the oleophilic silicone lubricant comprises the silicone fluid emulsion; and

the mixture is substantially free of surfactants aside from those employed to form the silicone emulsion.

20. The composition of claim 17 , wherein the oleophilic silicone lubricant comprises a polydimethyl siloxane, a polyalkyl siloxane, a polyphenyl siloxane, or a mixture thereof.

21. A method of lubricating a container and a contact surface of a conveyor surface, the method comprising:

applying a lubricant composition to the container, to the contact surface, or to both the container and the contact surface, without diluting a lubricant concentrate;
