Abstract

A glazing panel system is provided with improved glazing panels, retention clips and/or U-shaped connectors. The retention clip may engage the glazing panels at locations lower than top ends of the upstanding seam flanges. In one embodiment, an internal U-shaped connector is positioned to engage the seam flanges while an external U-shaped connector covers the internal connector and the seam between adjacent glazing panels. The glazing panels may be formed with pockets adjacent the base of the upstanding seam flanges to receive a portion of the retention clip to apply retention forces at locations below the upper ends of the seam flanges. The retention clips may be formed with an upper transverse portion that is movable relative to the base portion of the clip to accommodate panel expansion and contraction. Also, a thicker plate or portion may be provided at a top flange for the retention clip to provide increased resistance to uplift loads trying to bend the flange.

Claims (41)

1. A glazing panel system comprising:

a first and second glazing panel, each glazing panel having a top surface and a first end, the two first ends defining a seam between the two glazing panels;

a first upstanding seam flange projecting from each glazing panel at or near each first end, each of the two first upstanding seam flanges having a first engagement surface;

a connector having a transversely extending portion joining two outer depending legs, each of the outer depending legs having a corresponding second engagement surface, the first outer leg engaging one of the first upstanding seam flanges and the second outer leg engaging the other of the first upstanding seam flanges such that the connector covers the seam and both first upstanding seam flanges; and

a retention clip disposed in the seam between the two glazing panels;

wherein the connector has a central leg depending from the transversely extending portion between the outer depending legs and terminating above the seam;

wherein the central leg extends between the two first upstanding seam flanges, each first upstanding seam flange being positioned between the central leg and one of the two outer legs.

2. A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the connector is an inverted U-channel in shape.

3. A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 2 wherein the first engagement surfaces and second engagement surfaces are gripping surfaces such that each first upstanding seam flange has a first gripping surface for engagement with a corresponding second gripping surface of each outer leg.

4. A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 3 wherein the first and second engagement surfaces are toothed surfaces.

5. A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 3 wherein the central leg engages each of the two first upstanding seam flanges.

A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 5 wherein the central leg has a first gripping surface for engagement with a corresponding gripping surface of one of the first upstanding seam flanges and a second gripping surface for engagement with a corresponding gripping surface of the other of the first upstanding seam flanges.

7. A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 1 wherein each panel further comprises a second upstanding seam flange projecting from the first end and wherein each second upstanding seam flange is covered by the connector.

A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 7 wherein the first and second upstanding seam flanges on each glazing panel form a joined stepped configuration and wherein they each have top ends, the top end of the second upstanding seam flange being closer to the glazing panel than the top end of the first upstanding seam flange.

9. A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 8 wherein the retention clip has a top flange that engages the top ends of the second upstanding seam flanges.

10. A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the central leg is located above the seam and extends downwardly from the transversely extending portion to a position near the top surfaces of the glazing panels.

11. A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the central leg is positioned to cooperate with the outer legs to limit movement of the first upstanding seam flanges.

12. A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the retention clip engages each of the adjacent glazing panels below top ends of the first upstanding seam flanges for retention of the adjacent glazing panels against separation.

13. A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 1 wherein a retention clip pocket is formed in the top surface of each glazing panel to receive a portion of the retention clip therein.

14. A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the retention clip is made of extruded metal.

15. A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the retention clip is formed of a bent piece of sheet metal.

16. A glazing panel system comprising:

a first and second glazing panel, each panel having a top surface and a first end, the two first ends defining a seam between the two glazing panels;

a first upstanding seam flange projecting from each glazing panel at or near each first end, each of the two first upstanding seam flanges having a first engagement surface;

a connector having a transversely extending portion joining two outer depending legs, each of the outer depending legs having a corresponding second engagement surface, the first outer leg engaging one of the first upstanding seam flanges and the second outer leg engaging the other of the first upstanding seam flanges such that the connector covers the seam and both first upstanding seam flanges;

a central leg depending from the transversely extending portion between the outer depending legs and terminating above the seam and wherein the central leg extends between each of the two first upstanding seam flanges, each first upstanding seam flange being positioned between the central leg and one of the two outer legs;

a retention clip being disposed between the first ends of the two glazing panels;

a base on the retention clip for being secured to a support member for the glazing panels;

a web portion on the clip extending upwardly from the clip base and extending between the first ends of the two glazing panels; and

a portion on the retention clip extending transversely from the web portion and spaced upwardly of the base and engaging the two glazing panels for resisting uplift loads.

17. A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 16 comprising:

upstanding, projecting portions on the first ends of the glazing panels between the first upstanding seam flanges; and

depending portions on the transversely extending portion of the retention clip depending to cooperate with the upstanding projecting portions to resist separation of the respective first ends of the glazing panels.

18. A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 17 wherein the depending portions on the upper portion of the retention clip comprise a parallel pair of depending flanges.

19. A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 18 wherein the parallel, depending flanges are inserted into parallel pockets located in the ends of the respective first and second panels at a location adjacent the lower ends of the first upstanding seam flanges.

A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 17 wherein the upstanding projections on the first and second glazing panels comprise a pair of parallel bars disposed between the first upstanding seam flanges; and the clip depending portions comprise parallel flanges disposed on opposite sides of the upstanding bars.

21. A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 16 wherein each panel further comprises a second upstanding seam flange projecting from the first end and wherein each second upstanding seam flange is covered by the connector.

A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 21 wherein the first and second upstanding seam flanges on each glazing panel form a joined stepped configuration and wherein they each have top ends, the top end of the second upstanding seam flange being closer to the glazing panel than the top end of the first upstanding seam flange.

23. A glazing panel system in accordance with claim 22 wherein the retention clip has a top flange that engages the top ends of the second upstanding seam flanges.

24. The glazing panel system in accordance with claim 6 wherein the first and second gripping surfaces of the central leg are toothed surfaces.

25. The glazing panel system in accordance with claim 1 further comprising a fastener configured to fixedly secure the retention clip to a support member to limit movement of the retention clip.
