Abstract

A surgical device is described herein that can be used to fire different types and sizes of disposable loading units. In a preferred embodiment, the device applies parallel rows of surgical fasteners to body tissue and concomitantly forms an incision between the rows of staples during an endoscopic or laparoscopic surgical procedure. The device can be utilized with disposable loading units configured to apply linear rows of staples measuring from about 15 mm in length to about 60 mm in length and can be used to fire disposable loading units containing surgical clips and individual staples.

Claims (16)

1. A surgical stapling apparatus comprising:

a) a housing;

b) a movable handle supported by the housing;

c) an elongated body extending distally from the housing and defining a longitudinal axis;

d) an anvil and a staple cartridge having a plurality of surgical staples at the distal end of the elongated body;

e) an actuation shaft and a driving pawl, the actuation shaft having a plurality of teeth and being supported at least in part within the housing, the driving pawl being operatively associated with the movable handle and pivotable into engagement with the rack, wherein during the actuation stroke, the driving pawl effects advancement of the actuation shaft; and

f) a retraction mechanism including a release member operatively associated with the actuation shaft, the release member being movable into operative engagement with the driving pawl so that the actuation shaft can be retracted.

2. A surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the retraction mechanism further includes at least one knob positioned externally of the housing, the at least one knob being movable to move the release member into engagement with the driving pawl.

3. A surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a drive member connected to the actuation shaft, the drive member being movable in relation to the tool assembly to actuate the tool assembly.

4. A surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein the drive member is configured as an elongated beam.

5. A surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein the drive member is connected to the actuation shaft in a manner that allows the elongated body to rotate about the longitudinal axis.

6. A surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein an actuation of the handle advances the drive member through the staple cartridge in a distal direction.

7. A surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein the staple cartridge includes a plurality of pushers for ejecting the surgical staples from the staple cartridge.

8. A surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein the advancement of the drive member through the staple cartridge actuates the pushers.

9. A surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 8 , wherein the staple cartridge includes an actuation sled, the drive member pushing the actuation sled distally, the actuation sled driving the pushers to eject the surgical staples.

10. A surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein movement of the drive member through the staple cartridge ejects the surgical staples from the staple cartridge, more than one actuation of the handle being required to eject all of the surgical staples from the staple cartridge.
