Abstract

A method includes receiving, at a first device, data representing a graphic. The graphic includes non-uniformly toned regions with information steganographically encoded therein. The steganographically encoded information is decoded from the received data. The method also includes communicating with a second device and receiving data from the second device. An aspect of operation of the first device is controlled in accordance with the data received from the second device. The data received from the second device is a function of the decoded information.

Claims (35)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, at a first device, data representing a graphic, wherein the graphic comprises non-uniformly toned regions with information steganographically encoded therein;

decoding the steganographically encoded information from the received data;

communicating with a second device;

receiving data from the second device; and

controlling an aspect of operation of the first device in accordance with the data received from the second device, wherein the data received from the second device is a function of the decoded information.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the steganographic encoding is adapted in strength in accordance with features of the graphic, and wherein the adaptation comprises more than two different strengths.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the steganographic encoding is manifested as extra pseudo-random noise in the received graphic.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the controlling comprises presenting a web page on the first device, wherein the contents of the web page depend on data received from the second device.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising using the decoded information to identify a node on a computer network, wherein the node comprises the second device.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second device comprises a server computer.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising controlling output presented to a user of the first device in accordance with the data received from the second device.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second device is identified in accordance with the information decoded from the received data.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising producing the received graphic data from a non-digital representation thereof.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising producing the received graphic data by scanning a tangible medium with visible light.

11. A network-connected device comprising:

a decoder configured to decode information steganographically encoded within a data object, wherein the data object represents audio or visual content; and

a processor configured to:

utilize the decoded information to elicit an action by a remote computing device;

receive information from the remote computing device; and

control an aspect of operation of the network-connected device in accordance with the data received from the remove computing device, wherein the data received from the remove computing device is a function of the decoded information.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the data object represents a graphic having non-uniformly toned regions with the information steganographically encoded therein.

13. The device of claim 11 , wherein the decoded information comprises address information, and wherein the network-connected device includes a web browser that loads a web page identified by the address information.

14. The device of claim 11 , wherein the steganographic encoding of the data object is adapted in strength in accordance with features of the data object, wherein the adaptation comprises more than two different strengths.

15. The device of claim 11 , wherein the steganographic encoding is manifested as extra pseudo-random noise in the data object.

16. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon, the instructions comprising:

instructions to receive data representing a graphic, wherein the graphic comprises non-uniformly toned regions with information steganographically encoded therein;

instructions to decode the steganographically encoded information from the received data;

instructions to communicate with a second device;

instructions to receive data from the second device; and

instructions to control an aspect of operation of a first device in accordance with the data received from the second device, wherein the data received from the second device is a function of the decoded information.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the steganographic encoding is adapted in strength in accordance with features of the graphic, and wherein the adaptation comprises more than two different strengths.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the steganographic encoding is manifested as extra pseudo-random noise in the received graphic.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the instructions to control comprises instructions to present a web page on the first device, wherein the contents of the web page depend on data received from the second device.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , further comprising instructions to use the decoded information to identify a node on a computer network, wherein the node comprises the second device.
