Abstract

The invention relates to a method and a system for repartitioning a formalized hardware description of a hierarchically structured electronic circuit design unit comprising a plurality of macros in terms of latch macros and combinatorial macros. In a first step, each macro is dissected into latch macros and signal cones in such a way that each signal cone comprises signals linking macro input/output to a latch output/input, and each latch macro comprises at least one latch, each primary input an output of said latch macro coinciding with an input or an output of a latch within said latch macro. Subsequently, combinatorial macros are created by merging combinatorial signal cones along unit signal paths.

Claims (49)

1. A method for repartitioning a multilevel hierarchical description of a design unit comprising a plurality of macros, comprising:

repartitioning, using a computer, said hierarchical description of the design unit into a set of combinatorial macros and a set of latch macros;

wherein each combinatorial macro of said set of combinational macros-contains only combinatorial logic;

wherein each latch macro of said set of latch macros contains one or more latches; and

wherein each primary input and output of each latch macro of said set of latch macros coincides with an input or an output of a latch within said latch macro.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein all inputs and all outputs of each combinational macro of said set of combinational macros have an associated default timing assertions and wherein all inputs and all outputs of each latch macro of said set of latch macros have an associated default timing assertions.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said hierarchical description of said design unit is a VHDL description of said design unit.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said hierarchical description of said design unit is a netlist description of said design unit.

5. A method for repartitioning a multilevel hierarchical description of a design unit comprising a plurality of macros, comprising:

identifying all macros containing latches;

stripping each of these macros of all combinatorial logic and wiring located between the latches and primary inputs and outputs of said macro, thus generating latch macros; and

based on unit connectivity, regrouping, using a computer, the stripped-off combinatorial logic and wiring-into combinatorial macros.

6. The method of claim 5 , further including:

adding additional combinatorial logic to said combinatorial macros.

7. The method of claim 5 , further including:

associating default timing assertions to all inputs and all outputs of each combinational macro of said set of combinational macros; and

associating default timing assertions to all inputs and all outputs of each latch macro of said set of latch macros.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein said hierarchical description of said design unit is a VHDL description of said design unit.

9. The method of claim 5 , wherein said hierarchical description of said design unit is a netlist description of said design unit.

10. A computer system comprising a processor, a memory coupled to the processor, and a computer readable storage device coupled to the processor, said storage device containing program code configured to be executed by the processor via the memory to implement a method for repartitioning a multilevel hierarchical description of a design unit, said method comprising:

repartitioning said hierarchical description of the design unit into a set of combinatorial macros and a set of latch macros;

wherein each combinatorial macro of said set of combinational macros-contains only combinatorial logic;

wherein each latch macro of said set of latch macros contains one or more latches; and

wherein each primary input and output of each latch macro of said set of latch macros coincides with an input or an output of a latch within said latch macro.

11. The computer system of claim 10 , wherein said hierarchical description of said design unit is a VHDL description of said design unit.

12. The computer system of claim 10 , wherein said hierarchical description of said design unit is a netlist description of said design unit.

13. A computer system comprising a processor, a memory coupled to the processor, and a computer readable storage device coupled to the processor, said storage device containing program code configured to be executed by the processor via the memory to implement a method for repartitioning a multilevel hierarchical description of a design unit, said method comprising:

identifying all macros containing latches;

stripping each of these macros of all combinatorial logic and wiring located between the latches and primary inputs and outputs of said macro, thus generating latch macros; and

based on unit connectivity, regrouping the stripped-off combinatorial logic and wiring into combinatorial macros.

14. The computer system of claim 13 , the method further including:

adding additional combinatorial logic to said combinatorial macros.

15. The computer system of claim 13 , the method further including the step of:

associating default timing assertions to all inputs and all outputs of each combinational macro of said set of combinational macros; and

associating default timing assertions to all inputs and all outputs of each latch macro of said set of latch macros.

16. The computer system of claim 13 , wherein said hierarchical description of said design unit is a VHDL description of said design unit.
