Abstract

An earphone includes a first acoustic chamber having a reactive element and a resistive element in a parallel configuration, a second acoustic chamber separated from the first acoustic chamber by an acoustic transducer and including a unitary port to provide both pressure equalization of the second chamber and equalization of the earphone to a predetermined frequency response, and a housing to support the apparatus from the concha of a wearer's ear and to extend the second acoustic chamber into the ear canal of the wearer's ear.

Claims (80)

1. An earphone comprising:

an acoustic transducer; and

a housing enclosing the acoustic transducer, wherein

a first side of the acoustic transducer and a first region of the housing define a first acoustic chamber including a first reactive port and a first resistive port in a parallel configuration to couple the first chamber with space outside the earphone,

the first reactive port comprising an elongated tube, a first opening of the tube being open to the first acoustic chamber, and the second opening of the tube acoustically coupled to space outside the earphone,

wherein the first reactive port produces an acoustical reactive effect in the frequency response of the earphone that is greater than any acoustical resistive effect produced by the first reactive port in the frequency response over a frequency range of at least between 30 Hz and 100 Hz as measured in the ear canal;

the first resistive port comprising an opening in the housing and acoustically coupled to both the first acoustic chamber and space outside the earphone, the opening covered by a material providing an acoustic resistance;

a second side of the acoustic transducer and a second region of the housing define a second acoustic chamber separated from the first acoustic chamber by the acoustic transducer and including:

a second resistive port to couple the second acoustic chamber space outside the earphone other than at a wearer's ear canal and

a nozzle having an opening coupling the second acoustic chamber to the wearer's ear canal,

the second resistive port comprising an opening in the housing acoustically coupled to both the second acoustic chamber and space outside the earphone, the opening covered by a material providing an acoustic resistance;

the second acoustic chamber is located at least partially in the concha of the wearer's ear, the nozzle extends the second acoustic chamber at least partially into the ear canal of the wearer's ear, and

the nozzle includes an acoustically resistive element in the opening coupling the second acoustic chamber to the wearer's ear canal.

The earphone of claim 1 in which the first reactive port and the first resistive port are positioned to reduce pressure variation on a face of the transducer exposed to the first acoustic chamber as compared to an otherwise-identical earphone lacking the first reactive port and first resistive port.

3. An earphone comprising:

an acoustic transducer;

a housing enclosing the acoustic transducer, wherein the housing rests at least partially in the concha of a wearer and includes a nozzle extending at least to the entrance of an ear canal of a wearer, the nozzle ending with an opening that directs sound produced by the acoustic transducer into the ear canal of a wearer;

a first acoustic chamber defined by a first side of the acoustic transducer and a first portion of the housing;

a first reactive port comprising an elongated tube having a first opening acoustically coupled to the first acoustic chamber and a second opening acoustically coupled to space outside the earphone,

wherein the first reactive port produces an acoustical reactive effect in the frequency response of the earphone that is greater than any acoustical resistive effect produced by the first reactive port in the frequency response over a frequency range of at least between 30 Hz and 100 Hz as measured in the ear canal;

a first resistive port acoustically coupled between the first acoustic chamber and space outside the earphone, the first resistive port comprising an opening in the first portion of the housing and an acoustically resistive material covering the opening in the first portion of the housing;

wherein the first reactive port and first resistive port provide parallel acoustic paths from the first acoustic chamber to space outside the earphone;

a second acoustic chamber defined by a second side of the acoustic transducer and a second portion of the housing including the nozzle,

an acoustically resistive element located in series with at the opening of the nozzle; and

a second opening in the second portion of the housing that acoustically couples the second acoustic chamber to space outside the earphone other than the ear canal;

wherein the acoustically resistive element in the opening of the nozzle and the second opening provide separate parallel acoustic paths out of the housing from the second acoustic chamber.

4. The earphone of claim 3 wherein the acoustically resistive element covers an area in the opening of the nozzle approximately equal to the area of a circle having a diameter of 4 mm.

5. The earphone of claim 3 wherein the acoustically resistive element includes a hole that reduces the acoustical resistance of the acoustically resistive element as compared with an identical acoustically resistive element without a hole.

6. The earphone of claim 3 wherein the opening of the first resistive port and the first end of the first reactive port are symmetrically arranged around the first acoustic chamber.

7. The earphone of claim 3 further comprising a cushion removably attached to the housing, wherein the cushion at least partially couples the earphone to the wearer's ear.

8. The earphone of claim 7 wherein the cushion extends over the nozzle of the housing.

9. The earphone of claim 3 wherein the nozzle couples the second acoustic chamber with the ear canal of the wearer so as to acoustically seal the second acoustic chamber with the ear canal of the wearer.

10. The earphone of claim 3 wherein the housing comprises multiple pieces assembled together.

11. The earphone of claim 3 in which the first reactive port and the first resistive port cause the first acoustic chamber to have a resonance of between around 30 Hz and around 100 Hz.

12. The earphone of claim 3 , wherein the reactive port has a cross-sectional area approximately equal to the area of a circle having a diameter of 1.2 mm.

13. The earphone of claim 3 further comprising a second acoustically resistive element covering the second opening in the second portion of the housing.

14. The earphone of claim 3 wherein the acoustic transducer moves along a first axis and the nozzle funnels sound to the ear canal of a wearer along a second axis that is not parallel to the first axis.

15. A headphone device comprising:

(i) a pair of earphones, each earphone comprising:

an acoustic transducer;

a housing enclosing the acoustic transducer, wherein the housing rests at least partially in the concha of a wearer and includes a nozzle extending at least to the entrance of an ear canal of a wearer, the nozzle ending with an opening that directs sound produced by the acoustic transducer into the ear canal of a wearer;

a first acoustic chamber defined by a first side of the acoustic transducer and a first portion of the housing;

a first reactive port comprising an elongated tube having a first opening acoustically coupled to the first acoustic chamber and a second opening acoustically coupled to space outside the earphone,

wherein the first reactive port produces an acoustical reactive effect in the frequency response of the earphone that is greater than any acoustical resistive effect produced by the first reactive port in the frequency response over a frequency range of at least between 30 Hz and 100 Hz as measured in the ear canal;

a first resistive port acoustically coupled to space outside the earphone, the first resistive port comprising an opening in the first portion of the housing and an acoustically resistive material covering the opening in the first portion of the housing;

wherein the first reactive port and first resistive port provide parallel acoustic paths from the first acoustic chamber to space outside the earphone;

a second acoustic chamber defined by a second side of the acoustic transducer and a second portion of the housing including the nozzle, wherein the opening of the nozzle couples the second acoustic chamber with the ear canal of the wearer;

an acoustically resistive element located in the opening of the nozzle;

a second opening in the second portion of the housing that acoustically couples the second acoustic chamber to space outside the earphone other than the ear canal,

wherein the acoustically resistive element in series with the opening of the nozzle in each earphone is not in series with the second opening in the second portion of the housing;

(ii) a plug for connecting the pair of earphones to an external device that supplies audio signals;

(iii) a cord for delivering the audio signal supplied by the external device via the plug to the acoustic transducer in each earphone; and

(iv) a circuit housing affixed to the cord and located between the plug and the pair of earphones, the circuit housing including circuitry for controlling the volume of the audio signal supplied by the external device.

16. The headphone device of claim 15 wherein the circuitry in the circuit housing further provides for manual switching of the audio signal output by the external device.

17. The headphone device of claim 15 further comprising a second acoustically resistive element covering the second opening in the second portion of the housing.

18. The headphone device of claim 15 wherein the acoustically resistive element in each earphone covers an area at the opening of the nozzle approximately equal to the area of a circle having a diameter of 4 mm.

19. The headphone device of claim 15 wherein the acoustically resistive element in each earphone includes a hole that reduces the acoustical resistance of the acoustically resistive element as compared with an identical acoustically resistive element without a hole.

20. The headphone device of claim 15 wherein each earphone further comprises a cushion removably attached to the housing, wherein the cushion at least partially couples the earphone to the wearer's ear.

21. The headphone device of claim 15 wherein, in each earphone, the acoustic transducer moves along a first axis and the nozzle funnels sound to the ear canal of a wearer along a second axis that is not parallel to the first axis.

22. The headphone device of claim 16 wherein, in each earphone, the acoustic transducer moves along a first axis and the nozzle funnels sound to the ear canal of a wearer along a second axis that is not parallel to the first axis.

23. A headphone device comprising:

at least one earphone, the earphone comprising:

an acoustic transducer a sound-radiating surface that moves along a first axis, wherein the acoustic transducer separates a front acoustic chamber from a rear acoustic chamber;

a housing enclosing the acoustic transducer,

wherein the housing rests at least partially in the concha of a wearer and includes a nozzle extending at least to the entrance of an ear canal of a wearer, the nozzle ending with a first opening that directs sound produced by the acoustic transducer into the ear canal of a wearer, wherein the nozzle extends the second acoustic chamber at least to the entrance of the ear canal along a second axis that is not parallel to the first axis;

an acoustically resistive element in series with the first opening;

a second opening in the housing that acoustically couples the front acoustic chamber to space outside the earphone other than the ear canal;

wherein the acoustically resistive element in series with the first opening and the second opening in the housing provide separate parallel paths out of the earphone from the front acoustic chamber;

a first reactive port acoustically coupled between the rear acoustic chamber and space outside the earphone; and

a first resistive port acoustically coupled to space outside the earphone, the first resistive port comprising an opening in the first portion of the housing and an acoustically resistive material covering the opening in the first portion of the housing;

wherein the first reactive port and first resistive port provide parallel acoustic paths from the rear acoustic chamber to space outside the earphone.

24. The headphone device of claim 23 further comprising:

a plug for connecting the earphone to an external device that supplies audio signals;

a cord for delivering the audio signal supplied by the external device via the plug to the acoustic transducer in the earphone; and

a circuit housing affixed to the cord and located between the plug and the earphone, the circuit housing including circuitry for manual switching of the audio signal output by the external device.

25. The headphone device of claim 23 , wherein the second opening in the housing is covered by an acoustically resistive material.

26. The headphone device of claim 23 wherein the acoustically resistive element includes a hole that reduces the acoustical resistance of the acoustically resistive element as compared with an identical acoustically resistive element without a hole.

27. The headphone device of claim 23 further comprising a cushion removably attached to the housing, wherein the cushion at least partially couples the earphone to the wearer's ear.

28. The headphone device of claim 15 wherein the acoustically resistive element comprises a screen.

29. The headphone device of claim 23 wherein the acoustically resistive element comprises a screen.
