Abstract

Color measuring systems and methods are disclosed. Perimeter receiver fiber optics are spaced apart from a central source fiber optic and receive light reflected from the surface of the object being measured. Light from the perimeter fiber optics pass to a variety of filters. The system utilizes the perimeter receiver fiber optics to determine information regarding the height and angle of the probe with respect to the object being measured. Under processor control, the color measurement may be made at a predetermined height and angle. Various color spectral photometer arrangements are disclosed. Translucency, fluorescence and/or surface texture data also may be obtained. Audio feedback may be provided to guide operator use of the system. The probe may have a removable or shielded tip for contamination prevention.

Claims (28)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a processor;

a display coupled to the processor and displaying information to a user of the apparatus;

at least a first optical sensor making a series of first measurements, wherein data based on the first measurements are coupled to the processor;

at least a second optical sensor making a second measurement, wherein data based on the second measurement are coupled to the processor; and

a source of illumination emitting illumination external to the apparatus through a protective barrier;

wherein the first optical sensor receives illumination from the source of illumination from external to the apparatus through the protective barrier;

wherein based on the series of first measurements the processor determines a peak intensity when the apparatus is a predetermined distance from an object wherein as the apparatus moves towards the object an intensity of illumination received by the first optical sensor increases to the peak intensity at the predetermined distance and as the apparatus moves closer to the object than the predetermined distance the intensity of illumination received by the first optical sensor decreases to less than the peak intensity;

wherein the protective barrier has a thickness, wherein the thickness of the protective barrier is less than the predetermined distance;

wherein data based on the series of first measurements made with the first optical sensor determines a position of the apparatus with respect to the object.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the display is controlled responsive to the series of first measurements.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the display is controlled responsive to the second measurement.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the display is controlled responsive to the first and second measurements.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the object comprises human skin.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a circuit coupled to the processor providing an interface to an external computer.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the circuit comprises a serial communication circuit.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the display comprises an LCD.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a speaker coupled to the processor and outputting audio information.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a temperature sensor, wherein data indicative of temperature conditions of the apparatus are coupled to the processor, wherein the apparatus operates responsive to temperature conditions of the apparatus.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of switches, wherein the apparatus operates responsive to activation of the switches.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus includes a plurality of second optical sensors.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein one or more of the second optical sensors receive illumination via a filter.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising Flash memory coupled to the processor.

15. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a non-reflective material positioned between the source of illumination and the first optical sensor.

16. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein either the first optical sensor or the second optical sensor comprises a photo diode array coupled to an integrator, wherein the integrator outputs a signal having a frequency characteristic dependent upon an intensity of illumination received by the first optical sensor or the second optical sensor.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the first optical sensor or the second optical sensor comprise a light-to-frequency converter.

18. The apparatus of claim 1 , where both the first optical sensor and the second optical sensor comprise a photo diode array coupled to an integrator, wherein the integrator outputs a signal having a frequency characteristic dependent upon an intensity of illumination received by the first optical sensor or the second optical sensor, respectively.

19. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein both the first optical sensor and the second optical sensor comprise a light-to-frequency converter.
