Abstract

In one example, a firearm sound suppressor includes a housing, a baffle, and an inner sleeve adapted to be disposed within the housing and to substantially surround the baffle. The inner sleeve includes a sidewall adapted to slide against the housing to permit the inner sleeve with the baffle to be selectively inserted into and removed from the housing without the baffle contacting the housing, and a longitudinal split extending through the sidewall and between front and rear ends of the inner sleeve to permit the sidewall to flex to permit removal of the baffle from the inner sleeve. Other embodiments are also contemplated.

Claims (46)

1. A firearm sound suppressor comprising:

a plurality of separable baffles adapted to be arranged in a longitudinal stack and define a plurality of substantially annular outer surfaces; and

a single piece inner sleeve adapted to be disposed within a housing and to substantially surround the baffles, the inner sleeve comprising:

a single sidewall adapted to slide against the housing to permit the inner sleeve with the baffle to be selectively inserted into and removed from the housing without the baffle contacting the housing,

an inner surface of the sidewall adapted to directly contact the substantially annular outer surfaces of the baffles while the inner sleeve is disposed within the housing, and

a single longitudinal split extending through the sidewall and between front and rear ends of the inner sleeve to permit the sidewall to flex to permit removal of the baffle from the inner sleeve.

2. The firearm sound suppressor of claim 1 , further comprising:

the housing; and

a plurality of protrusions on a front end of the housing that define crenelations between the protrusions.

3. The firearm sound suppressor of claim 1 , further comprising the housing, wherein the housing comprises a plurality of substantially planar surfaces disposed longitudinally along the housing and recessed with respect to first and second ends of the housing.

4. The firearm sound suppressor of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of annular outer surfaces of the baffles collectively define a substantially cylindrical outer surface.

5. The firearm sound suppressor of claim 1 , further comprising an end plate adapted to removably couple the firearm sound suppressor to a firearm.

6. The firearm sound suppressor of claim 5 , wherein the end plate comprises an aperture and an internal thread disposed therein and adapted to engage a complementary thread proximate to a muzzle end of a barrel of the firearm.

7. The firearm sound suppressor of claim 1 , further comprising front and rear end plates adapted to be coupled to corresponding ends of the housing by external threads disposed on the end plates adapted to engage complementary internal threads disposed in the corresponding ends of the housing.

8. The firearm sound suppressor of claim 7 , further comprising an O-ring sealingly disposed between an outer circumfery of at least one of the end plates and an inner circumfery of the housing.

9. The firearm sound suppressor of claim 1 , wherein the inner sleeve comprises an aluminum tube.

10. A method of maintaining the firearm sound suppressor of claim 1 , the method comprising:

sliding the single sidewall against the housing to remove the inner sleeve from the housing while the inner sleeve substantially surrounds the baffles and without the baffles contacting the housing;

exerting a force on the sidewall to flex the sidewall; and

removing the baffles from the inner sleeve while the sidewall flexes.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein:

prior to the exerting, the inner surface of the sidewall and the substantially annular outer surfaces of the baffles are adhered to each other by combustion residue; and

the force flexes the sidewall so as to break adhesion between the inner surface of the sidewall and the substantially annular outer surfaces of the baffles.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising cleaning the baffles after the removing.

13. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

disposing the baffles within the inner sleeve;

compressing the sidewall of the inner sleeve; and

sliding the sidewall of the inner sleeve against the housing to insert the inner sleeve into the housing while the inner sleeve substantially surrounds the baffles and without the baffles contacting the housing.

14. A method of manufacturing the firearm sound suppressor of claim 1 , the method comprising:

providing the baffles;

providing the inner sleeve;

exerting a force on the sidewall to cause the sidewall to flex; and

inserting the baffles into the inner sleeve while the sidewall flexes.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

providing the housing;

compressing the sidewall of the inner sleeve; and

sliding the sidewall of the inner sleeve against the housing to insert the inner sleeve into the housing while the inner sleeve substantially surrounds the baffles and without the baffles contacting the housing.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

providing front and rear end plates; and

coupling respective ones of the front and rear end plates to corresponding ends of the housing.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the coupling comprises:

providing external threads on the end plates, the external threads being adapted to engage complementary internal threads disposed in the corresponding ends of the housing; and

screwing the end plates into the corresponding ends of the housing.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the providing the front and rear end plates comprises providing an internal thread in an aperture in the rear end plate adapted to engage a complementary thread proximate to a muzzle end of a barrel of a firearm.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the providing the front and rear end plates comprises providing a circumferential O-ring groove in an outer circumference of at least one of the end plates.

20. The method of claim 14 , wherein the inner sleeve comprises an aluminum tube.
