Abstract

In one embodiment, a wavefront sensor is combined with a slit lamp eye examination device so that real time aberration values of an eye being examined can be viewed during a slit lamp eye examination session.

Claims (22)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a real-time wavefront sensor configured to continually sample a first set of wavefronts returned from an eye of a patient over a time interval during which an accommodation of the eye of the patient is being changed, and with the real-time wavefront sensor configured to output wavefront measurement data characterizing the first set of wavefronts;

an internal fixation module configured to project an image onto the eye of the patient to change the accommodation of the eye of the patient; and

a controller, coupled to the wavefront sensor and the internal fixation module, with the controller configured to monitor the output wavefront measurement data and compare the first set of wavefronts to reference wavefronts while controlling the internal fixation module to change the accommodation of the eye of the patient during the time interval and with the controller further configured to indicate when the change of accommodation causes the first set of wavefronts to substantially differ from the reference wavefronts to indicate accommodation limit(s) of the eye of the patient.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 where the internal fixation module further comprises:

a micro display, a variable focus lens, and a beam directing element configured to project an image of the micro display onto the eye of the patient.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 where the controller is further configured to:

measure whether an implanted accommodative intra ocular lens (AIOL) can provide a desired accommodation range.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 where the controller is further configured to:

utilize real-time biofeedback information to enhance the functioning of an accommodative intra ocular lens (AIOL) lens through psychophysical feedback or feedback of results to the patient to maximize performance of AIOL.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 where the controller is further configured to:

detect changes in the accommodation of the patient while obtaining real time wavefront measurement results, via a biofeedback mechanism to the patient, to enhance residual capabilities and thereby to delay the onset of presbyopia and to treat presbyopia when it begins.

6. An apparatus for measuring refractive error of a patient eye during an operative procedure on the patient eye, the apparatus comprising:

a real-time wavefront sensor configured to continually sample a first set of wavefronts returned from a patient eye over an intra-operative time interval during which a procedure for titrating the refraction of the patient eye is performed, and with the real-time wavefront sensor configured to output wavefront measurement data characterizing the first set of wavefronts; and

a data processor, coupled to the real-time wavefront sensor to receive the wavefront measurement data, with the data processor configured to analyze wavefront measurement data characterizing the first set of wavefronts to detect a value of a residual astigmatism of the patient eye and configured to output an indication of the residual astigmatism during the intra-operative time interval.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 further comprising:

a feedback component, coupled to the data processor, configured to receive the output of the data processor and to indicate the value of the residual astigmatism during the intra-operative time interval.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 with the feedback component comprising a visual display.

9. The apparatus of claim 7 with the feedback component configured to output an audio signal indicating the value of the residual astigmatism.

10. The apparatus of claim 6 where the procedure for titrating the refraction of the patient eye comprises a limbal relaxation incision (LRI).

11. The apparatus of claim 6 where the procedure for titrating the refraction of the patient eye comprises a corneal relaxation incision (CRI) procedure.

12. The apparatus of claim 6 where the procedure for titrating the refraction of the patient eye comprises a toric intra-ocular lens (IOL) rotation procedure.
