In vivo accessories for minimally invasive surgery
Surgical accessories are presented in vivo and used by surgical tools in the surgical site to perform additional tasks without the need to remove the tools from the surgical site for tool change or instrument loading. The accessories can be introduced into the surgical site by a dedicated accessory introducer, or can be supported on the body of a surgical tool inserted into the surgical site and be manipulated using another surgical tool in the surgical site. The accessory introducer can be resiliently biased to bias the accessories toward a predetermined position in the surgical site.
1. A method for adapting a surgical instrument in vivo for performing a medical procedure, the method comprising:
inserting an accessory introducer into a patient body, wherein a plurality of surgical accessories is coupled to the accessory introducer so that the plurality of surgical accessories is inserted into the patient body when the accessory introducer is inserted into the patient body;
grasping one of the plurality of surgical accessories with a grasping tool which has been inserted into the patient body; and
manipulating the grasping tool to attach the grasped surgical accessory to a tip of a surgical instrument which has been inserted into the patient.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein inserting an accessory introducer into the patient body comprises:
inserting a container into the patient body, wherein the plurality of surgical accessories is contained in the container.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein inserting an accessory introducer into the patient body comprises:
inserting a support into the patient body, wherein the plurality of surgical accessories is held by the support.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein manipulating the grasping tool to attach the grasped surgical accessory to a tip of a surgical instrument which has been inserted into the patient body comprises:
manipulating the grasping tool to attach the grasped surgical accessory to the tip of the surgical instrument by snap fitting a protrusion of the grasped surgical accessory into a slot of the tip of the surgical instrument.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein manipulating the grasping tool to attach the grasped surgical accessory to a tip of a surgical instrument which has been inserted into the patient body comprises:
manipulating the grasping tool to attach the grasped surgical accessory to the tip of the surgical instrument by placing a collar of the grasped surgical accessory over a wrist member of the surgical instrument so that a spring retention ring of the collar applies a resilient force to wrap around a groove of the wrist member.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the grasped surgical accessory is a forceps sheath, and wherein manipulating the grasping tool to attach the grasped surgical accessory to a tip of a surgical instrument which has been inserted into the patient body comprises:
manipulating the grasping tool to attach the grasped surgical accessory to the tip of the surgical instrument by placing the forcep sheath over a working member on the tip of the surgical instrument.
