Abstract

Systems and methods for providing deeper knee flexion capabilities. In some instances, such systems and methods include an a modular anterior flange that includes a first surface configured to interface with an anterior portion of a distal end of a femur; a second surface configured to articulate against at least one of a patella and a patellar implant; a proximal end; and a distal end, wherein the distal end is configured to interface with a proximal end of an anterior portion of a femoral component that is configured to replace a distal portion of the femur. Other implementations are also discussed.

Claims (34)

1. A femoral flange comprising:

an anterior flange configured to couple with an anterior portion of a distal end of a femur, the anterior flange comprising:

an articular surface configured to articulate against at least one of a patella and a patellar implant;

and

a distal end that is configured to interface with a proximal end of an anterior portion of a femoral component that is configured to replace a distal portion of the femur,

wherein the femoral component coin rises an interior surface configured to interface with an anterior chamfer cut surface on the distal end of the femur.

2. The femoral flange of claim 1 , wherein the articular surface of the anterior flange comprises a groove that is configured to articulate against the at least one of the patella and the patellar implant.

3. The femoral flange of claim 1 , wherein the distal end of the anterior flange is configured to couple with the proximal end of the anterior portion of the femoral component within about 10 mm of a proximal end of the anterior chamfer cut.

4. The femoral flange of claim 1 , wherein the distal end of the anterior flange is configured to be medially and laterally adjustable on the femur with respect to the proximal end of the anterior portion of the femoral component when the anterior flange and the femoral component are seated on the femur and prior to the anterior flange being fixed to the femur.

5. The femoral flange of claim 1 , wherein the distal end of the anterior flange is configured to be distally and proximally adjustable on the femur with respect to the proximal end of the anterior portion of the femoral component when the anterior flange and the femoral component are seated on the femur and prior to the anterior flange being fixed to the femur.

6. The femoral flange of claim 1 , wherein the distal end of the anterior flange is configured to couple to the proximal end of the anterior portion of the femoral component via a process that extends between the anterior flange and the proximal end of the anterior portion of the femoral component and a recess that receives the process.

7. The femoral flange of claim 6 , wherein the process is tapered.

8. The femoral flange of claim 1 , wherein an angle between the anterior flange and the proximal end of the anterior portion of a femoral component is configured to be adjusted when the anterior flange and the femoral component are seated on the femur and prior to the anterior flange being fixed to the femur.

9. The femoral flange of claim 1 , wherein the anterior flange and the proximal end of the anterior portion of the femoral component are configured to couple together via at least one of a butt joint, a lap joint, a butt-lap joint, a rebated joint, a mortise and tenon joint, and a dovetail joint.

10. The femoral flange of claim 1 , wherein the distal end of the anterior flange comprises a concave surface that is configured to be coupled to the proximal end of the anterior portion of the femoral component.

11. A femoral flange comprising:

a modular flange configured to couple to a distal portion of a femur, the modular flange comprising:

an articular surface comprising a patellar groove; and

a distal end,

wherein the distal end is configured to couple with a proximal end of an anterior portion of a femoral component having an internal surface that is configured to interface with an anterior chamfer cut surface on the femur, and

wherein the modular flange is configured to be at least one of (i) medially and laterally, (ii) proximally and distally, and (iii) angularly adjustable with respect to the proximal end of the anterior portion of the femoral component when the modular flange and the femoral component are seated on the distal portion of the femur and prior to the modular flange being fixed to the femur.

12. The femoral flange of claim 11 , wherein the distal end of the modular flange comprises a coupling surface that is configured to overlap a portion of the proximal end of the anterior portion of the femoral component when the modular flange and the femoral component are seated at the distal portion of the femur.

13. The femoral flange of claim 11 , wherein the distal end of the modular flange comprises a process, wherein the proximal end of the anterior portion of the femoral component comprises a recess that is configured to receive the process, and wherein the modular flange is configured to be medially and laterally adjustable with respect to the femoral component when the anterior flange and the femoral component are seated on the distal portion of the femur and prior to the modular flange being fixed to the femur.

14. The femoral flange of claim 13 , wherein the recess is configured to pivotally receive the process prior to fixation of the modular flange to the femur.

15. The femoral flange of claim 13 , wherein the distal end of the modular flange is configured to be couple to the femur within about 10 mm of a proximal limit of articular cartilage on the distal portion of the femur.

16. The femoral flange of claim 13 , further comprising the femoral component, and wherein the internal surface of the femoral component runs at an angle between about 30 degrees and about 55 degrees with respect a longitudinal axis of the distal portion of the femur.

17. A femoral flange comprising:
