Abstract

The present invention relates to an implantable device for improving the pump function of the heart of a human patient by applying an external force on the heart muscle. The implantable device comprises at least one implantable pump device comprising: A fluid, A first reservoir having a first volume and at least one movable wall portion, for varying said first volume, and A second reservoir being in fluid connection with said first reservoir. Wherein said implantable pump device is adapted to allow free flow of fluid between said first reservoir and said second reservoir, and wherein said first reservoir, said second reservoir and said fluid connection forms a fully implantable closed pump device, and wherein said fully implantable closed pump device is adapted to transfer force from said first reservoir to said second reservoir.

Claims (52)

1. A surgical method for implanting a pump device for improving the pump function of the heart of a human patient, by applying an external force on the heart muscle to assist in and help the pump function of the heart, the surgical method comprising the steps of:

implanting a first reservoir having a first volume and adapted to varying said first volume,

implanting a second reservoir having a second volume and adapted to varying said second volume,

implanting a fluid connection adapted to fluidly connect said first reservoir with said second reservoir, such that fluid can flow between said first reservoir and said second reservoir, such that said first reservoir, said second reservoir and said fluid connection form a fully implantable pump device adapted to maintain a fluid in a closed system, when in operation, and said fully implantable pump device is adapted to transfer force by transferring fluid from said first reservoir to said second reservoir to directly or indirectly apply an external force on the first position of the heart muscle, and wherein said surgical method further comprises:

implanting a sensor that, when implanted in the body, senses muscle contractions of the heart.

2. The surgical method according to claim 1 , further comprising the step of implanting a subcutaneous injection port for calibrating a fluid level of said fully implantable pump device from the outside of the body of the patient.

3. The surgical method according to claim 1 , further comprising the steps of :

implanting one or more additional second reservoir(s) being in fluid connection with said first reservoir,

implanting at least one valve adapted to have different valve positions, and adapted to be placed in the fluid connection between said first reservoir and said second reservoir and said one or more additional second reservoir(s), wherein said valve connects said first reservoir with at least one of the second reservoir and said one or more additional second reservoir(s), wherein said reservoirs and said fluid connections forms a fully implantable pump device adapted to maintain a fluid in a closed system, when in operation, and wherein said pump device transfers force by transferring fluid from said first reservoir to one or more additional second reservoirs to directly or indirectly apply an external force on the second or more positions of the heart muscle for improving the pump function of the heart, depending on the position of the valve, when said device is implanted.

4. The surgical method according to claim 3 , wherein at least one of said second reservoirs is implanted to operate on a first part of the heart, and said one or more further second reservoirs is implanted to operate on a second or more parts of the heart.

5. The surgical method according to claim 1 , further comprising implanting a heart contacting organ in connection with the heart and said second reservoir.

6. The surgical method according to claim 1 , further comprising the steps of:

inserting a needle or a tube like instrument into the thorax of the patient's body,

using the needle or a tube like instrument to fill the thorax with gas thereby expanding the thoracic cavity,

placing at least two laparoscopic trocars in the patient's body,

inserting a camera through one of the laparoscopic trocars into the thorax,

inserting at least one dissecting tool through one of said at least two laparoscopic trocars and dissecting at least one intended placement area in the area of the heart of the patient, and

connecting a source of energy or an energy receiver for powering said pump device for improving the pump function of the heart.

7. The surgical method according to claim 1 , further comprising the steps of:

cutting the skin and opening the thorax,

dissecting at least one intended placement area in the area of the heart of the patient, and

connecting a source of energy or an energy receiver for powering said pump device for improving the pump function of the heart.

8. The surgical method according to claim 1 , further comprising the steps of:

inserting a needle or a tube like instrument into the abdomen of the patient's body,

using the needle or a tube like instrument to fill the abdomen with gas thereby expanding the abdominal cavity,

placing at least two laparoscopic trocars in the patient's body,

inserting a camera through one of the laparoscopic trocars into the abdomen,

inserting at least one dissecting tool through one of said at least two laparoscopic trocars,

dissecting and creating a hole in the diaphragm muscle

dissecting at least one intended placement area in the area of the heart of the patient through said hole, and

connecting a source of energy or an energy receiver for powering said implantable device for improving the pump function of the heart.

9. The surgical method according to claim 1 , further comprising the steps of:

dissecting an area of the abdomen, and

placing at least one of the first and second reservoir in the dissected area in the abdomen.

10. The surgical method according to claim 1 , further comprising the steps of:

dissecting an area of the thorax, and

placing at least one of the first and second reservoir in the dissected area in the thorax.

11. The surgical method according to claim 1 , further comprising the steps of:

cutting the skin and opening the abdomen

dissecting and creating an opening in the diaphragm muscle

dissecting at least one intended placement area in the area of the heart of the patient through said opening, and

connecting a source of energy or an energy receiver for powering said implantable device for improving the pump function of the heart.

12. The surgical method according to claim 1 , further comprising the steps of:

implanting at least one operating device for operating the implantable pump device.

13. The surgical method according to claim 12 , wherein the step of implanting at least one operating device comprises implanting the at least one operating device in the thorax of the patient.

14. The surgical method according to claim 12 , wherein the step of implanting at least one operating device comprises implanting the at least one operating device in the abdomen of the patient.

15. The surgical method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of implanting an operation device comprises implanting an operation device adapted to be controlled from outside of the body non-invasively.

16. The surgical method according to claim 1 , further comprising implanting a pacemaker connected to the sensor.

17. The surgical method according to claim 1 , further comprising implanting an energy-transforming device adapted to receive energy transmitted wirelessly from outside the body of the patient.

18. The surgical method according to claim 1 , further comprising implanting an energy receiver or an energy source in the abdomen of the patient.

19. The surgical method according to claim 1 , further comprising implanting an energy receiver or an energy source in the thorax of the patient.

20. The surgical method according to claim 1 , further comprising implanting an energy receiver or an energy source subcutaneously in the patient.
