Abstract

The present invention relates to a kit for taking biopsies, resections, excisions, and/or autopsies. Moreover, the present invention relates to methods of taking biopsies resections, excisions, and/or autopsies using the kit of the present invention. The kits and methods of the present invention allow for fewer errors, decreased turn around time and/or more rapid processing due to a cassette and specimen numbering system that is simplified and superior over that which has been previously disclosed in the prior art. The kit of the present invention comprises one or more tissue cassettes, and optionally one or more bottles of formalin and optionally, other components.

Claims (12)

1. A method of archiving a plurality of tissue samples comprising:

providing a tissue kit having a plurality of tissue cassettes that are each adapted to receive a single tissue sample and include pre-assigned identifying indicia associated with the single tissue sample;

conducting a biopsy of a patient, wherein the biopsy comprises removing a plurality of tissue samples from the patient;

placing a single tissue sample in a single tissue cassette of the plurality of tissue cassettes according to the pre-assigned identifying indicia on the single tissue cassette; and

archiving the plurality of tissue cassettes according to the pre-assigned identifying indicia such that each single tissue sample contained in the plurality of tissue cassettes can be later identified.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of providing one or more vessels containing a fixative and/or preservative for holding at least a portion of the plurality of tissue cassettes after a tissue sample has been inserted in the tissue cassette and placing the each tissue cassette in a vessel of the one or more vessels after a tissue sample is placed in the tissue cassette.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the one or more vessels include pre-assigned identifying indicia corresponding to at least one of a patient from whom the tissue samples were removed and the location on the body of the patient where the tissue samples were extracted.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the pre-assigned identifying indicia associated with the single tissue sample comprises body location information for the location of a patient's body where the tissue sample was extracted.

5. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising the step of associating the pre-assigned identifying indicia with the tissue sample prior to conducting the biopsy.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of conducting a biopsy of a patient comprises conducting a biopsy selected from the group of biopsies consisting of bone biopsy, bone marrow biopsy, breast biopsy, cervical biopsy, joint biopsy, kidney biopsy, liver biopsy, lymph node biopsy, lung biopsy, pleural biopsy, prostate biopsy, small intestine biopsy, skin biopsy, synovial biopsy, thyroid biopsy, parathyroid biopsy, stomach biopsy, esophagus biopsy, oral cavity biopsy, pharynx biopsy, larynx biopsy, colon biopsy, rectal biopsy, anus biopsy, bladder biopsy, pancreas biopsy, spleen biopsy, central nervous system biopsy, peritoneum biopsy, genital biopsy, reproductive organ biopsy, heart biopsy and mediastinum biopsy.

7. The kit of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of cassettes comprises at least twelve cassettes and wherein each of the at least twelve cassettes is adapted to receive a single tissue sample extracted during the biopsy.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of cassettes comprises at least twelve cassettes.
