Abstract

A method that incorporates teachings of the subject disclosure may include, for example, analyzing a signal to identify a present interference and extracting the interference from the signal. The extracting can include comparing a presence time for the interference with a reference time; if the presence time exceeds the reference time and at least one of a plurality of filters is available for filtering the present interference, an available filter of the plurality of filters is activated, thereby causing filtering of the interference from the signal. If no filter is available due to activation of the filters for filtering a plurality of previously identified interferences, a priority order is determined for the present interference and the previously identified interferences, based on their interference signal levels. The filters are assigned to the interferences in accordance with the priority order. Other embodiments are disclosed.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the first narrowband channel and the second narrowband channel are separated by a third narrowband channel without interference.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of filters comprise filters having different bandwidths, and wherein the activating further comprises selecting an available filter having a filter bandwidth greater than an interference bandwidth of the present interference.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reference time duration corresponds to a frame rate for data exchange performed by the processing system.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the present interference has a first interference signal strength, and wherein the assigning further comprises removing an assignment of a filter of the plurality of filters from an interference of the plurality of previously identified interferences having a second interference signal strength, responsive to determining that the second interference signal strength is less than the first interference signal strength during a predetermined time duration.

9. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

updating, by the processing system, an interference status for each of the plurality of narrowband channels; and

transmitting, by the processing system, a list of the plurality of narrowband channels and the updated interference status to a memory accessible to the processing system.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of filters comprises an adaptive notch filter (ANF) coupled to the processor via a switch.

11. A device comprising:

a processing system including a processor; and

a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processing system, facilitate performance of operations comprising:

receiving a signal including a communication signal, wherein the processing system includes a plurality of filters, and wherein the signal comprises a wideband communication signal having a frequency bandwidth including a plurality of narrowband channels;

analyzing the signal to identify a present interference; and

extracting the present interference from the signal,

wherein the extracting comprises:

determining a presence time duration for the present interference;

comparing the presence time duration with a reference time duration;

responsive to the presence time duration exceeding the reference time duration:

responsive to at least one of the plurality of filters being available for filtering the present interference:

activating an available filter of the plurality of filters, thereby causing filtering of the present interference from the signal;

responsive to none of the plurality of filters being available for filtering the present interference due to activation of the plurality of filters for filtering a plurality of previously identified interferences:

determining a priority order of a set of interferences comprising the present interference and the plurality of previously identified interferences, based on interference signal levels thereof; and

assigning the plurality of filters to the set of interferences, in accordance with the priority order.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the present interference comprises a first narrowband interference signal in a first narrowband channel, wherein a second interference comprises a second narrowband interference signal in a second narrowband channel, and wherein the activating further comprises selecting an available filter having a filter bandwidth covering both the first and second narrowband channels.

13. The device of claim 11 , wherein the operations further comprise:

updating an interference status for each of the plurality of narrowband channels; and

transmitting a list of the plurality of narrowband channels and the updated interference status to the memory.

14. The device of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of filters comprise filters having different bandwidths, and wherein the activating further comprises selecting an available filter having a filter bandwidth greater than an interference bandwidth of the present interference.

15. The device of claim 11 , wherein the present interference has a first interference signal strength, and wherein the assigning further comprises removing an assignment of a filter of the plurality of filters from an interference of the plurality of previously identified interferences having a second interference signal strength, responsive to determining that the second interference signal strength is less than the first interference signal strength during a predetermined time duration.
