Abstract

Probiotic Bifidobacterium strain AH1714 is significantly immunomodulatory following oral consumption. The strain is useful as an immunomodulatory biotherapeutic agent.

Claims (14)

1. A formulation for oral administration to a human, the formulation comprising isolated strain Bifidobacterium longum AH1714 deposited with NCIMB under accession number NCIMB 41676 and an ingestible carrier, wherein the formulation is immunomodulatory following oral consumption by the human.

2. The formulation of claim 1 , wherein the Bifidobacterium longum AH1714 is in the form of viable cells.

3. The formulation of claim 1 , wherein the Bifidobacterium longum AH1714 is in the form of non-viable cells.

4. The formulation of claim 1 , wherein the formulation comprises an additional probiotic material.

5. The formulation of claim 1 , wherein the formulation further comprises a prebiotic material.

6. The formulation of claim 1 , wherein the ingestible carrier is a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier selected from the group consisting of a capsule, a tablet, and a powder.

7. The formulation of claim 1 , wherein the ingestible carrier is a food product selected from the group consisting of acidified milk, yoghurt, frozen yoghurt, milk powder, milk concentrate, cheese spreads, dressings, and beverages.

8. The formulation of claim 1 , wherein the formulation further comprises a protein comprising glutamine or glutamate, a peptide comprising glutamine or glutamate, a lipid, a carbohydrate, a vitamin, mineral, a trace element, or a combination thereof.

9. The formulation of claim 1 , wherein the Bifidobacterium longum AH1714 strain is present in an amount of more than 10 6 cfu per gram of the formulation.

10. The formulation of claim 1 , wherein the formulation further comprises an adjuvant.

11. The formulation of claim 1 , wherein the formulation comprises an additional bacterial component.

12. The formulation of claim 1 , wherein the formulation further comprises a drug entity.

13. The formulation of claim 1 , wherein the formulation comprises an additional biological compound.

14. A foodstuff comprising the formulation of claim 1 .
