Abstract

A fiber optic enclosure assembly includes a housing having an interior region and a bearing mount disposed in the interior region of the housing. A cable spool is connectedly engaged with the bearing mount such that the cable spool selectively rotates within the housing. A termination module disposed on the cable spool so that the termination module rotates in unison with the cable spool. A method of paying out a fiber optic cable from a fiber optic enclosure includes rotating a cable spool, which has a subscriber cable coiled around a spooling portion of the cable spool, about an axis of a housing of the fiber optic enclosure until a desired length of subscriber cable is paid out. A termination module is disposed on the cable spool.

Claims (46)

1. A telecommunications enclosure comprising:

a wall mountable housing having a rear adapted to face toward a wall when the housing is mounted to the wall and an opposite front adapted to face away from the wall when the housing is mounted to the wall, the housing including a rear housing piece defining the rear of the housing and a front cover, the rear housing piece defining a front opening for allowing access to an interior of the rear housing piece, the front cover being movable relative to the rear housing piece between a first position and a second position, the front cover covering the front opening of the rear housing piece when in the first position such that access to the interior of the rear housing piece through the front opening is blocked by the front cover, the front cover not blocking the front opening when in the second position such that access to the interior of the rear housing piece through the front opening is permitted;

a spool disposed within the housing, the spool being rotatable relative to the housing about an axis of rotation that intersects the front cover when the front cover is in the first position;

a fiber optic cable coiled about a spooling portion of the spool, the fiber optic cable having a first end and a second end, the fiber optic cable including at least one optical fiber;

a fiber optic connector coupled to the optical fiber at the first end of the fiber optic cable;

the fiber optic cable being payable from the spool while the spool is positioned within the housing by pulling the second end of the fiber optic cable from the housing causing the spool to rotate relative to the housing about the axis of rotation as the fiber optic cable is paid out from the spool, wherein the fiber optic connector rotates in concert with the spool as the fiber optic cable is paid out from the spool;

a fiber optic adapter for coupling the fiber optic connector to a connectorized end of a subscriber cable, the fiber optic adapter being positioned at a first location within the housing;

the housing defining a cable opening for routing the subscriber cable into the housing, wherein a cabling region is provided within the housing for passing the subscriber cable from the cable opening to the first location; and

wherein the front cover blocks access to the fiber optic adapter and the cabling region from the front of the housing when in the first positon, and wherein the fiber optic adapter and the cabling region are accessible from the front of the housing when the cover is in the second position.

The telecommunications enclosure of claim 1 , wherein the front opening has a cross-dimension that is larger than an outer diameter of the spool, and wherein the front cover is connected to the rear housing piece by a hinge such that the front cover pivots relative to the rear housing piece between the first and second positions.

3. The telecommunications enclosure of claim 1 , wherein the fiber optic connector is supported on the spool when the fiber optic cable is paid out from the spool.

4. The telecommunications enclosure of claim 1 , wherein the fiber optic adapter is coupled to the fiber optic connector, and wherein the fiber optic adapter rotates in concert with the spool as the fiber optic cable is paid out from the spool.

The telecommunications enclosure of claim 1 , wherein the fiber optic cable includes a plurality of optical fibers, wherein a plurality of fiber optic connectors terminate the optical fibers at the first end of the fiber optic cable, wherein the fiber optic connectors rotate in concert with the spool as the fiber optic cable is paid out from the spool, wherein the telecommunications enclosure further includes a plurality of fiber optic adapters, and wherein the fiber optic connectors are secured within the plurality of fiber optic adapters when the fiber optic cable is paid out.

6. The telecommunications enclosure of claim 2 , wherein the rear housing piece defines a plurality of rear fastener openings at the rear of the housing for use in securing the housing to the wall.

7. The telecommunications enclosure of claim 6 , wherein the rear housing piece includes side walls that extend forwardly from the rear of the housing, and wherein the hinge is forwardly offset from the rear of the housing and is located at a forward end of one of the side walls.

The telecommunications enclosure of claim 1 , wherein the rear housing piece includes forwardly projecting walls, and wherein the front cover is hingedly connected to a front end of one of the forwardly projecting walls of the rear housing piece by a hinge such that the hinge is forwardly offset from the rear of the housing, wherein the housing has a length that extends between first and second opposite ends of the housing and a width perpendicular to the length that extends between first and second opposite sides of the housing, and wherein the length is longer than the width.

The telecommunications enclosure of claim 8 , wherein the hinge is located at the first end of the housing, wherein the cable opening is defined at the second end of the housing, wherein the spool is mounted closer to the first end than the second end, and wherein the cabling region extends between the spool and the second end of the housing.

10. The telecommunications enclosure of claim 8 , wherein the hinge is located at the first side of the housing, wherein the cable opening is defined at the second end of the housing, and wherein a corner is defined between the first side of the housing and the second end of the housing.

The telecommunications enclosure of claim 8 , wherein the cable opening is defined in part by the rear housing piece and in part by the front cover when the front cover is in the first position, wherein the rear housing piece includes a forwardly facing surface that defines a first portion of the cable opening and the front cover includes a rearwardly facing surface that defines a second portion of the cable opening when the front cover is in the first position.

The telecommunications enclosure of claim 1 , wherein the housing has a length that extends between first and second opposite ends of the housing and a width perpendicular to the length that extends between first and second opposite sides of the housing, wherein the first and second sides of the housing extend between the first and second ends of the housing, wherein the length is longer than the width, wherein the cable opening is defined at the second end of the housing, wherein the cabling region is defined within the housing between the spool and the second end of the housing.

The telecommunications enclosure of claim 12 , wherein the rear housing piece includes a plurality of walls that extend forwardly from the rear of the housing and that at least partially define the first and second ends of the housing and the first and second sides of the housing, and wherein a hinge is forwardly offset from the rear of the housing and is located at a forward end of one of the plurality of walls.

14. The telecommunications enclosure of claim 1 , wherein the cabling region extends at least partially across a front side of the spool so as to be defined between the front side of the spool and the front cover when the front cover is in the first position.

15. The telecommunications enclosure of claim 1 , further comprising a cable manager within the housing for storing slack cable within the housing, the cable manager including a curved guide surface.

16. The telecommunications enclosure of claim 15 , wherein the cable manager is a second spool located at a front face of the spool.

17. The telecommunications enclosure of claim 1 , further comprising fastener pass-through locations defined by the rear housing piece at the rear of the housing.

18. The telecommunications enclosure of claim 17 , wherein the fastener pass-through location includes fastener openings.

19. The telecommunications enclosure of claim 17 , wherein the fastener pass-through locations are defined through a rear wall of the rear housing piece, wherein the fastener pass-through locations are offset from the spool such that the fastener pass-through locations are not blocked by the spool and can be accessed from the front of the housing when the front cover is in the second position, and wherein the front cover blocks access to the fastener pass-through locations from the front of the housing when the front cover is in the first position.

20. The telecommunications enclosure of claim 1 , wherein a cable seal is provided at the cable opening.

21. A fiber optic enclosure comprising:

a housing including major sides and minor sides, the major sides defining a front and an opposite back, the minor sides extending between the front and back of the housing, the housing also including a cover movable between an open position and a closed position, the front of the housing being open when the cover is in the open position and being closed when the cover is in the closed position;

the housing defining a cable opening for routing a subscriber cable into the housing;

a spool mountable within the housing;

a fiber optic cable coiled about a spooling portion of the spool, the fiber optic cable including at least one optical fiber;

a fiber optic connector coupled to the optical fiber of the fiber optic cable;

a fiber optic adapter positioned within the housing, the fiber optic adapter including a first connector port for receiving the fiber optic connector and also including an opposite second connector port, the cover preventing the first and second connector ports of the fiber optic adapter from being accessed from the front of the housing when the cover is in the closed position, and the first and second connector ports of the fiber optic adapter being accessible from the front of the housing when the cover is in the open position;

the fiber optic cable being payable from the spool while the spool is positioned within the housing, wherein the spool rotates relative to the housing about an axis of rotation as the fiber optic cable is paid out from the spool, and wherein the fiber optic connector rotates in concert with the spool as the fiber optic cable is paid out from the spool; and

wherein access for plugging a connectorized end of the subscriber cable into the second connector port of the fiber optic adapter is: a) available from the front of the housing when the cover is in the open position; and b) not available from the front of the housing when the cover is in the closed position.

22. The fiber optic enclosure of claim 21 , wherein the cover is coupled to a minor side of the housing by a hinge.

23. The fiber optic enclosure of claim 21 , wherein the fiber optic connector is supported on the spool when the fiber optic cable is paid out from the spool.

24. The fiber optic enclosure of claim 21 , wherein the fiber optic adapter is coupled to the fiber optic connector, and wherein the fiber optic adapter rotates in concert with the spool as the fiber optic cable is paid out from the spool.

25. The fiber optic enclosure of claim 21 , wherein the fiber optic cable includes a plurality of optical fibers, wherein a plurality of fiber optic connectors terminate the optical fibers at the first end of the fiber optic cable, wherein the fiber optic connectors rotate in concert with the spool as the fiber optic cable is paid out from the spool, wherein the telecommunications enclosure further includes a plurality of fiber optic adapters, wherein the plurality of fiber optic connectors are secured within the plurality of fiber optic adapters when the fiber optic cable is paid out from the spool.

26. The fiber optic enclosure of claim 21 , wherein a cable seal is provided at the cable opening.

27. The fiber optic enclosure of claim 21 , further comprising a cable manager within the housing for storing slack cable within the housing, the cable manager including a curved guide surface.

28. The fiber optic enclosure of claim 27 , wherein the cable manager is configured for storing the slack cable in a coil.

29. The fiber optic enclosure of claim 27 , wherein the cable manager includes a slack storage spool which defines the curved guide surface.

30. The fiber optic enclosure of claim 21 , further comprising means for storing slack cable in a coil within the housing.
