Abstract

A peritoneal dialysis system includes: a drain container; a drain line placed in fluid communication with the drain container and configured to be placed in fluid communication with a patient's peritoneal cavity; a vacuum source configured to apply a pneumatic force to cause used dialysis fluid to flow through the drain line from the patient's peritoneal cavity to the drain container; a weight sensor configured to output a weight of used dialysis fluid delivered to the drain container from the patient's peritoneal cavity; and a controller configured to: (i) determine an actual flow rate of used dialysis fluid removed from the patient's peritoneal cavity based on the output from the weight sensor; (ii) compare the actual flow rate to a desired flow rate; and (iii) adjust the pneumatic force applied by the vacuum source to attempt to match the actual flow rate to the optimal flow rate.

Claims (10)

1. A peritoneal dialysis system comprising:

a drain container;

a drain line including a first end placed in fluid communication with the drain container and a second end configured to be placed in fluid communication with a patient's peritoneal cavity;

a vacuum source positioned and arranged to apply a pneumatic force causing used dialysis fluid to flow through the drain line from the patient's peritoneal cavity to the drain container; and

a controller programmed to control the vacuum source to: (i) apply the pneumatic force at a first level to cause used dialysis fluid to be drained from the patient's peritoneal cavity at a first flow rate during a first portion of a patient drain; and (ii) adjust the pneumatic force to a second level to cause used dialysis fluid to be drained from the patient at a second, different flow rate during a second portion of the patient drain.

2. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the controller includes a memory storing a patient profile including the first flow rate and the second, different flow rate.

3. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 1 , which includes a weight sensor, wherein the controller is configured to adjust from the first pneumatic force level to the second pneumatic force level when an output from the weight sensor reaches a threshold.

4. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 1 , which is configured to apply the pneumatic force to the drain container.

5. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the second pneumatic force level is less than the first pneumatic force level.

6. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the second portion of the patient drain occurs after at least 70% of the used dialysis fluid has been drained from the patient's peritoneal cavity.
