Abstract

The present invention provides a device and methodology for use in spinal fusion surgeries. An implant is proved for forming a rigid structure between adjoining vertebrae in a patient. The implant is a cage defined by at least a first end, second end, first side, and second side surface, wherein first and second side surfaces extend substantially parallel to each other to span a space between adjoining vertebrae and first and second ends interconnect said first side surface and second side surface. The cage incorporates one or more flexible joints that allow the cage to be deformed for insertion into a patient. The ability to deform the cage allows a greater ease and flexibility in inserting and positioning the implant.

Claims (29)

1. A surgical system, comprising:

an implant having a first end, a second end, a top surface, a bottom surface, an anterior surface, and a posterior surface, the first and second end surfaces interconnecting the anterior and posterior surfaces, the top and bottom surfaces being configured to abut adjacent vertebral bodies to maintain distraction therebetween; and

an insertion guide having a curved end, the insertion guide being configured to allow the implant to slide along a length thereof and to position the implant between adjacent vertebral bodies,

wherein the implant is configured to transform from a non-expanded state into an expanded state, the implant having a larger profile in the expanded state than in the non-expanded state.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the implant includes one or more cavities that extend from the top surface to the bottom surface of the implant, the cavities being configured to receive a bone graft material therein.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the implant includes two cavities.

4. The system of claim 1 , further including an opening on a first end or second end of the implant for receiving an inserter instrument therethrough for attaching to the implant.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the implant is made of one or more biocompatible materials such as PEAK, carbon fiber, titanium, stainless steel, and Nitinol.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the implant includes one or more surface configurations thereon for attaching the implant to an insertion guide.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the implant is curved to conform to the curved end of the insertion guide.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the anterior surface of the implant curves through a greater arc than the posterior surface of the implant.

9. The system of claim 2 , wherein the implant is hollow between the first end and the second end to allow the bone graft material to flow therethrough.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the top surface extends substantially parallel to the bottom surface to span a space between the adjacent vertebral bodies.

11. A surgical method, comprising:

inserting an implant in a non-expanded state into a space between adjacent vertebral bodies between the vertebral bodies, the implant comprising a first end, a second end, a top surface, a bottom surface, an anterior surface, and a posterior surface, the first and second end surfaces interconnecting the anterior and posterior surfaces, the top and bottom surfaces being configured to abut the adjacent vertebral bodies to maintain distraction in the space;

inserting a guide having a curved distal end into the space, the guide being configured to position the implant in a location within the space,

expanding the implant within the space into a second, expanded state to abut the adjacent vertebral bodies,

wherein the implant has a larger profile in the expanded state than in the non-expanded state.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising transforming the implant from an expanded state to the non-expanded state to conform to a shape of the guide prior to inserting the implant into the space.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising sliding the implant along the guide to insert the implant within the space.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the anterior surface faces an anterior direction of the space and the posterior surface faces a posterior direction of the space when the implant is positioned within the space.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the posterior surface of the implant is in contact with the guide when the implant slides along the guide.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the implant curves to conform to the curved distal end of the guide as the implant slides relative to the guide.

17. The method of claim 11 , further comprising coupling an inserter to an opening in the first end of the implant to insert the implant into the space.

18. The method of claim 11 , further comprising preparing the space between adjacent vertebral bodies prior to inserting the implant therein.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein preparing the space further comprises making an incision in the patient's skin and forming an access window into the space prior to inserting the implant therein.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein preparing the space further comprises removing disk material between the adjacent vertebral bodies.

21. The method of claim 11 , further comprising withdrawing the guide from the space.

22. The method of claim 21 , further comprising delivering a graft material into the space.
