Abstract

A distributed radio frequency communication system facilitates communication between a wireless terminal and a core network. The system includes a remote radio unit (RRU) coupled to at least one antenna to communicate with the wireless terminal. The RRU includes electronic circuitry to perform at least a first portion of a first-level protocol of a radio access network (RAN) for communicating between the wireless terminal and the core network. The system also includes a baseband unit (BBU) coupled to the core network, and configured to perform at least a second-level protocol of the RAN. A fronthaul link is coupled to the BBU and the RRU. The fronthaul link utilizes an adaptive fronthaul protocol for communication between the BBU and the RRU. The adaptive fronthaul protocol has provisions for adapting to conditions of the fronthaul link and radio network by changing the way data is communicated over the fronthaul link.

Claims (37)

1. A method, performed by a baseband unit (BBU), for facilitating communication between a core network and a remote radio unit (RRU) in a distributed radio access network (RAN), the method comprising:

performing at least a second-level protocol of the RAN on data being communicated between the core network and the RRU;

communicating digital frequency-domain information representing the data over a fronthaul link with the RRU using an adaptive fronthaul protocol;

determining an indicator of quality of the fronthaul link during said communicating; and

dynamically changing one or more parameters of the RAN based on the indicator.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the indicator of quality of the fronthaul link is determined based, at least in part, on information received from the RRU over the fronthaul link.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the information received from the RRU comprises RRU buffer status information, RRU buffer overrun indications, RRU buffer underrun indications, information about a received radio frequency signal, or any combination thereof.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the indicator of quality of the fronthaul link is determined based, at least in part, on a latency of the fronthaul link, a bandwidth of the fronthaul link, errors on the fronthaul link, undelivered packets on the fronthaul link, out-of-order packets on the fronthaul link, BBU buffer overruns, BBU buffer underruns, or any combination thereof.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more parameters of the RAN comprise:

frequency-domain allocation size, modulation and coding schemes, number of users, number of grants, pattern of usable subframe, anticipation of the scheduling with respect to the time index it refers to, or any combination thereof.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the indicator of quality of the fronthaul link comprises a latency of the fronthaul link, and the one or more parameters of the RAN comprises a ra-ResponseWindowSize parameter in a MAC protocol of an E-UTRA network.

7. An article of manufacture comprising at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having computer-readable instructions stored thereon that, executed on a computing system functioning as a baseband unit (BBU), facilitate communication between a core network and a remote radio unit (RRU) in a distributed radio access network (RAN) by performing operations comprising:

performing at least a second-level protocol of the RAN on data being communicated between the core network and the RRU;

communicating digital frequency domain information representing the data over a fronthaul link with the RRU using an adaptive fronthaul protocol;

determining an indicator of quality of the fronthaul link; and

dynamically changing one or more parameters of the RAN based on the indicator.

8. The article of manufacture of claim 7 , wherein the indicator of quality of the fronthaul link is determined based, at least in part, on information received from the RRU over the fronthaul link.

9. The article of manufacture of claim 7 , wherein the information received from the RRU comprises RRU buffer status information, RRU buffer overrun indications, RRU buffer underrun indications, information about a received radio frequency signal, or any combination thereof.

10. The article of manufacture of claim 7 , wherein the indicator of quality of the fronthaul link is determined based, at least in part, on a latency of the fronthaul link, a bandwidth of the fronthaul link, errors on the fronthaul link, undelivered packets on the fronthaul link, out-of-order packets on the fronthaul link, BBU buffer overruns, BBU buffer underruns, or any combination thereof.

11. The article of manufacture of claim 7 , wherein the one or more parameters of the RAN comprise:

frequency-domain allocation size, modulation and coding schemes, number of users, number of grants, pattern of usable subframe, anticipation of the scheduling with respect to the time index it refers to, or any combination thereof.

12. The article of manufacture of claim 7 , wherein the indicator of quality of the fronthaul link comprises a latency of the fronthaul link, and the one or more parameters of the RAN comprises a ra-ResponseWindowSize parameter in a MAC protocol of an E-UTRA network.

13. A baseband unit (BBU) for use with a remote radio unit (RRU) in a distributed radio access network (RAN) and coupled to a core network, the BBU comprising:

a processor;

one or more memory devices, coupled to the processor, storing instructions to program the processor; and

interface circuitry coupled to the processor and a fronthaul link;

the processor programmed to:

perform at least a second-level protocol of the RAN on data being communicated between the core network and the RRU;

communicate digital frequency domain information representing the data over a fronthaul link with the RRU using an adaptive fronthaul protocol;

determine an indicator of quality of the fronthaul link; and

dynamically change one or more parameters of the RAN based on the indicator.

14. The BBU of claim 13 , wherein the indicator of quality of the fronthaul link is determined based, at least in part, on information received from the RRU over the fronthaul link.

15. The BBU of claim 13 , wherein the information received from the RRU comprises RRU buffer status information, RRU buffer overrun indications, RRU buffer underrun indications, information about a received radio frequency signal, or any combination thereof.

16. The BBU of claim 13 , wherein the indicator of quality of the fronthaul link is determined based, at least in part, on a latency of the fronthaul link, a bandwidth of the fronthaul link, errors on the fronthaul link, undelivered packets on the fronthaul link, out-of-order packets on the fronthaul link, BBU buffer overruns, BBU buffer underruns, or any combination thereof.

17. The BBU of claim 13 , wherein the one or more parameters of the RAN comprise:

frequency-domain allocation size, modulation and coding schemes, number of users, number of grants, pattern of usable subframe, anticipation of the scheduling with respect to the time index it refers to, or any combination thereof.
