Abstract

Nuclear fuel elements may include: a fuel zone including fuel particles disposed in parallel layers in a matrix including graphite powder; and a shell comprising graphite and surrounding the fuel zone. The fuel particles may include fissile particles, burnable poison particles, breeder particles, or a combination thereof. The fuel zone may include a central region and a peripheral region surrounding the central region, and a fuel particle density of the peripheral region may be greater than a fuel particle density of the central region.

Claims (44)

1. A nuclear fuel element comprising:

a fuel zone comprising:

fuel particles disposed in parallel layers and in a predetermined pattern, the fuel particles comprising fissile particles, burnable poison particles, breeder particles, or a combination thereof; and

a matrix configured to separate the fuel particles, the matrix comprising graphite powder, graphite spheres, or a combination thereof; and

a fuel particle-free shell comprising graphite powder and surrounding the fuel zone, wherein:

the fuel zone comprises a central region and a peripheral region surrounding the central region;

a fuel particle density of the peripheral region is greater than a fuel particle density of the central region; and

the matrix comprises layers of graphite powder configured to separate adjacent layers of fuel particles.

2. The nuclear fuel element of claim 1 , wherein a fuel particle density of the fuel zone increases linearly or exponentially, as a distance from the center of the fuel zone increases.

3. The nuclear fuel element of claim 1 , wherein:

the fuel particles comprise fissile particles and burnable poison particles; and

the central region has a higher burnable poison particle to fissile particle ratio than the peripheral region.

4. The nuclear fuel element of claim 1 , wherein:

the fuel particles comprise fissile particles and breeder particles; and

the central region has a higher breeder particle to fissile particle ratio than the peripheral region.

5. The nuclear fuel element of claim 1 , wherein the fuel particles of adjacent layers do not overlap a direction substantially perpendicular to planes of the layers.

6. The nuclear fuel element of claim 1 , wherein:

the fuel element is a spherical fuel pebble suitable for use in a pebble bed high temperature gas cooled reactor; and

the fuel particles comprise tri-structural-isotropic (TRISO) nuclear fuel particles that do not have an overcoat.

7. The nuclear fuel element of claim 1 , wherein:

the nuclear fuel element has a diameter ranging from about 5.5 cm to about 6.5 cm; and

the shell has a thickness ranging from about 0.5 cm to about 1.5 cm.

8. A nuclear fuel element comprising:

a fuel zone comprising:

fuel particles disposed in parallel layers and in a predetermined pattern, the fuel particles comprising fissile particles, burnable poison particles, breeder particles, or a combination thereof; and

a matrix configured to separate the fuel particles, the matrix comprising graphite powder, graphite spheres, or a combination thereof; and

a fuel particle-free shell comprising graphite powder and surrounding the fuel zone, wherein:

the fuel zone comprises a central region and a peripheral region surrounding the central region;

a fuel particle density of the peripheral region is greater than a fuel particle density of the central region; and

the central region is free of fuel particles.

9. The nuclear fuel element of claim 8 , wherein:

the matrix comprises graphite powder; and

a density of the graphite in the central region is less than a density of the graphite in the peripheral region.

10. The nuclear fuel element of claim 1 , wherein A nuclear fuel element comprising:

a fuel zone comprising:

fuel particles disposed in parallel layers and in a predetermined pattern, the fuel particles comprising fissile particles, burnable poison particles, breeder particles, or a combination thereof; and

a matrix configured to separate the fuel particles, the matrix comprising graphite powder, graphite spheres, or a combination thereof; and

a fuel particle-free shell comprising graphite powder and surrounding the fuel zone, wherein:

the fuel zone comprises a central region and a peripheral region surrounding the central region;

a fuel particle density of the peripheral region is greater than a fuel particle density of the central region; and

the matrix comprises graphite powder and graphite spheres that are approximately the same size as the fuel particles.

11. The nuclear fuel element of claim 10 , wherein:

all or substantially all of the graphite powder of the matrix is disposed in the central region; and

all or substantially all of the graphite spheres of the matrix are disposed in the peripheral region.
