Abstract

A modular robotic system that includes a plurality of self-configuring robots. Each self-configuring robot includes a frame structure having a plurality of cylindrical bonding magnets positioned along the edges of the frame structure. The frame structure includes magnetic, non-gendered, hinges on any of the edges of the frame. The hinges provide enough force to maintain a pivot axis through various motions. The cylindrical bonding magnets are free to rotate allowing for multiple self-configurations with other like self-configuring robots. A movement generator is positioned within the frame structure that pivots to generate multi-axis movement allowing both robust self-reconfiguration with the other self-configuring robots and independent locomotion.

Claims (20)

1. A self-configuring robot comprising:

a frame structure that includes a plurality of cylindrical bonding magnets positioned along the edges of the frame structure, the frame structure includes magnetic, non-gendered hinges on any of the edges of the frame, the hinges provide force to maintain a pivot axis through various motions, the cylindrical bonding magnets are free to rotate allowing for multiple self-configurations with another modular structure having magnetic properties; and

an actuator that is positioned within the frame structure, the actuator includes a belt and a flywheel structure where the actuator is used to tighten the belt that rapidly decelerates the flywheel to create an impulse of torque generating multi-axis movement allowing both robust self-reconfiguration with said other modular structure and independent locomotion, wherein a goal location is defined such that when the actuator is aligned with the goal location, the actuator is used to apply a of torque that causes controlled rotation about a magnetic hinge toward the goal location on a lattice, otherwise the actuator is stochastically reoriented using a torque that causes rotation of the actuator about the pivot axis of the frame structure so as to align the actuator to the goal location, wherein when the actuator shares a same pivot axis with actuators of a plurality of other self-configuring robots, the actuator and the actuators of the plurality of other self-configuring robots coordinate moving together.

2. The self-configuring robot of claim 1 , wherein the cylindrical bonding magnets are diametrically polarized.

3. The self-configuring robot of claim 1 , wherein the multi-axis movement comprises moving independently in traverse planar unstructured environments.

4. The self-configuring robot of claim 1 , wherein the multi-axis movement comprises sliding using pivoting action.

5. The self-configuring robot of claim 1 further comprising a plurality of alignment magnets arranged to maintain gender neutrality.

6. The self-configuring robot of claim 5 , wherein the alignment magnets comprise diameter disc magnets that are embedded in each faces of said frame structure.

7. The self-configuring robot of claim 1 , wherein the multi-axis movement comprises movements in 2D or 3D.

8. A modular robotic system comprising:

a plurality of self-configuring robots, each comprising a frame structure that includes a plurality of cylindrical bonding magnets positioned along the edges of the frame structure, the frame structure includes magnetic, non-gendered hinges on any of the edges of the frame, the hinges provide force to maintain a pivot axis through various motions, the cylindrical bonding magnets are free to rotate allowing for multiple self-configurations with other self-configuring robots; and a movement generator positioned within the frame structure that pivots to generate multi-axis movement allowing both robust self-reconfiguration with said other self-configuring robots and independent locomotion, wherein a goal location is defined such that when the actuator is aligned with the goal location, the actuator is used to apply a torque that causes controlled rotation about a magnetic hinge toward the goal location on a lattice, otherwise the actuator is stochastically reoriented using a torque that causes rotation of the actuator about the pivot axis of the frame structure so as to align the actuator to the goal location, wherein the self-configuring robots move to form a lattice structure of self-configuring robots, when a group of the self-configuring robots share a same pivot axis, the group of the self-configuring robots coordinate their respective actuators in order to move together.

9. The modular robotic system of claim 8 , wherein the cylindrical bonding magnets are diametrically polarized.

10. The modular robotic system of claim 8 , wherein the movement comprises moving independently in traverse planar unstructured environments.

11. The modular robotic system of claim 8 , wherein the movement comprises sliding using pivoting action.

12. The modular robotic system of claim 8 further comprising a plurality of alignment magnets arranged to maintain gender neutrality.

13. The self-configuring robot of claim 12 , wherein the alignment magnets comprise diameter disc magnets that are embedded in each face the frame structure.

14. The modular robotic system of claim 8 , wherein each said self-configuring robot performs pivoting motions by selecting a volume of space that must not intersect other self-configuring robots.
