Abstract

A device for the determination of at least one compression parameter during administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on a patient comprising: a field generator, a field detector, and a processor. Position information and the compression parameter are determined from the field detected by the field detector. One of the field generator and the field detector is a position sensor and the other is a reference sensor.

Claims (61)

1. A device for use during administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by a rescuer, the device comprising:

a generator configured to generate an electromagnetic (EM) field, the generator positioned at a first position of a torso of a patient and to move with the first position of the torso of the patient during chest displacement;

a first detector configured to detect the EM field and generate a first response signal based on a parameter of the detected EM field, the first detector positioned at a second position of the torso of the patient;

a second detector configured to detect the EM field and generate a second response signal, the second detector is stationary relative to the patient,

wherein at least one of the generator and the first detector has two orthogonally wound coils, each of the coils are configured to respectively generate or detect the EM field; and

a processor configured to:

determine position and orientation information that represents the movement of the generator, the position and orientation information based on the first response signal and the second response signal;

calculate a value of a CPR parameter based on the position and orientation information; and

output the value of the CPR parameter to a feedback component.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the value of the CPR parameter represents one or more of a compression depth, a chest recoil, and a compression angle.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the generator and the detector has three orthogonally wound coils.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the device includes the feedback component.

5. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a separate, external unit that includes the feedback component.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the separate unit includes a defibrillator.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the generator further includes a switch configured to detect:

a start of the movement of the generator, the movement caused by an administered chest compression,

an end of the movement of the generator, or

both the start and the end of the movement of the generator.

8. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a temperature sensor placed within or adjacent to one or both of the coils of the generator or the detector.

9. A device for use during administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by a rescuer, the device comprising:

a generator configured to generate an electromagnetic (EM) field, the generator positioned at a first position of a torso of a chest of a patient;

a first detector positioned at a second position of the torso of the patient and to move with the second position of the torso of the patient during chest displacement, the detector configured to detect the EM field and generate a first response signal based on a parameter of the detected EM field;

a second detector configured to detect the EM field and generate a second response signal, the second detector is stationary relative to the patient; and

a processor configured to:

determine position and orientation information that represents the movement of the detector, the position and orientation information based on the first response signal and the second response signal;

calculate a value of a CPR parameter based on the position and orientation information; and

generate an instruction to output the value of the CPR parameter to a feedback component, wherein either the generator or the detector has two orthogonally wound coils.

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the value of the CPR parameter represents one or both of a compression depth and a chest recoil.

11. The device of claim 10 , wherein the value of the CPR parameter further includes a compression angle.

12. The device of claim 9 , wherein at least one or both of:

the generator has the two orthogonally wound coils and the detector has a single field generating coil or field detecting coil, and

the detector has the two orthogonally wound coils and the detector has the single field generating coil or the field detecting coil.

13. The device of claim 9 , further comprising a temperature sensor within or adjacent to the generator or the detector.

14. The device of claim 9 , further comprising a separate, external unit that includes the feedback component.

15. The device of claim 9 , wherein the detector is included in a defibrillator pad.

16. The device of claim 9 , wherein the feedback component is configured to output one or more of an audible, tactile, or visual prompt to the rescuer based on the value of the CPR parameter.

17. The device of claim 9 , wherein the position and orientation information is based on one or both of a strength of the response signal and a time between generating the EM field and detecting the EM field.

18. The device of claim 1 , wherein the parameter of the EM field includes a magnitude of the EM field.

19. The device of claim 9 , wherein the parameter of the EM field includes a magnitude of the EM field.

20. A device for use during administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by a rescuer, the device comprising:

a generator configured to generate an electromagnetic (EM) field;

a first detector configured to detect the EM field and generate a first response signal based on a parameter of the detected EM field, wherein either the generator or the first detector has two orthogonally wound coils, and wherein:

either the generator or the first detector is structured to be positioned on a first position of a chest of a patient and to move with the first position of the torso of the patient during chest displacement;

if the generator is positioned on the first position of the torso of the patient, the first detector is positioned on a stationary portion of the patient, the stationary portion of the patient positioned away from the chest of the patient during chest displacement; and

if the first detector is positioned on the first position of the torso of the patient, the generator is structured to be positioned on the stationary portion of the patient;

a second detector configured to detect the EM field and generate a second response signal, the second detector is stationary relative to the patient; and

a processor configured to:

determine position and orientation information that represents the movement of the generator or the first detector, wherein the position and orientation information corresponds with the chest displacement of the patient and is based on the first response signal and the second response signal;

calculate a value of a CPR parameter based on the position and orientation information; and

generate an instruction to output the value of the CPR parameter to a feedback component.

21. The device of claim 20 , wherein the value of the CPR parameter represents one or both of a compression depth and a chest recoil.

22. The device of claim 21 , wherein the value of the CPR parameter further represents a compression angle.

23. The device of claim 20 , wherein at least one of:

the generator has the two orthogonally wound coils and the detector has a single field generating coil or field detecting coil, and

the detector has the two orthogonally wound coils and the generator has the single field generating coil or the field detecting coil.

24. The device of claim 20 , further comprising a temperature sensor within or adjacent to the generator or the detector.

25. The device of claim 20 , further comprising a separate, external unit that includes the feedback component.

26. The device of claim 20 , wherein the generator or the detector is included in a defibrillator pad depending on which of the generator or the detector is positioned on the first position of the torso of the patient.

27. The device of claim 20 , where the feedback component is configured to output one or more of an audible, tactile, or visual prompt to the rescuer based on the value of the CPR parameter.

28. The device of claim 20 , wherein the position and orientation information is determined based on one or more of a strength of the response signal and a time between generating the EM field and detecting the EM field.

29. The device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to calibrate the device by determining an ambient interference in the environment based on the second response signal.
