Abstract

The present invention relates generally to methods and materials pertaining to assays, for example immunoassays, for biomarkers in body fluids e.g. blood. The invention also relates to diagnostic or screening methods for infections, and methods of differentiating between infectious and non-infectious conditions in mammals, particularly equines, for monitoring response to anti-infective/antibiotic therapy. The invention further relates to a test fluid collection system adapted to permit dilution and analysis of the collected test fluid. The invention further relates to monitoring exertional rhabdomyolysis in equines, and assay devices for all these things.

Claims (14)

1. A method of diluting a metred quantity of a test fluid for analysis, the method comprising:

i) contacting a collection tip coupled to a housing with a sample of the test fluid to collect the metred quantity of test fluid into a collection port within the housing, the collection tip in fluid communication with the collection port, the collection port having two spaced members having opposing hydrophilic surfaces forming an open-sided configuration that defines a volume between them corresponding to the metred quantity of test fluid to be collected;

ii) inserting the housing into an opening of a liquid container to form a seal fit between said opening and said housing; and

iii) agitating the container such that a metred quantity of test fluid is extracted from the collection port into liquid within the liquid container.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising dispensing a diluted test fluid for analysis, the dispensing comprising:

inverting or reducing the volume of the liquid container such that the diluted test fluid is forced through a dispensing inlet, along to a dispensing channel and out of a dispensing nozzle defined by structures of the housing;

wherein the dispensing channel decreases in diameter by between 10-21% over the height of the dispensing nozzle and wherein the dispensing nozzle is flared at the dispensing nozzle exit to dispense the diluted test fluid in a uniform manner as drops from the liquid container.

3. The method as claimed in claim 2 , further comprising:

diluting the test fluid by a pre-determined amount prior to the analysis.

4. The method as claimed in claim 2 further comprising:

i) dispensing the diluted test fluid into an analytical device; and

ii) assessing a presence or amount of one or more analytes with said device.

5. The method as claimed in claim 4 , wherein the device is a lateral flow device (LFD) device.

6. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the test fluid is a body fluid.
