Abstract

Disclosed are oral care compositions having reduced tooth staining propensity and comprising in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, a cationic antimicrobial agent and an anti-stain agent comprising one or more materials from each of at least two of the following chemical groups: Group 1. anionic agents, Group 2. aldehydes, ketones, and other reactive carbonyl compounds and Group 3. nonionic ethoxylated surfactants. Examples of cationic antimicrobial agent include quaternary ammonium compounds such as cetylpyridinium chloride, cetyl pyridinium fluoride, tetradecylpyridinium chloride, N-tetradecyl-4-ethyl pyridinium chloride and domiphen bromide; chlorhexidine; and metal ion sources to supply metal ions such as stannous, zinc or copper.

Claims (38)

1. A single-phase dentifrice composition, comprising:

a. stannous fluoride;

b. sodium lauryl sulfate;

c. polyphosphate selected from the group consisting of dialkali metal pyrophosphate salt, tetraalkali metal pyrophosphate salt, tripolyphosphate, and mixtures thereof;

d. carvone, and

e. cocamidopropyl betaine,

wherein the polyphosphate is the only source of polyphosphate in the dentifrice composition.

2. The dentifrice composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises from about 2% to about 30% of the polyphosphate, by weight of the dentifrice composition.

3. The dentifrice composition of claim 2 , wherein the composition comprises from about 5% to about 25% of the polyphosphate, by weight of the dentifrice composition.

4. The dentifrice composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises saccharin.

5. The dentifrice composition of claim 4 , wherein the composition comprises titanium dioxide.

6. The dentifrice composition of claim 5 , wherein the composition comprises from about 0.25% to about 5% of the titanium dioxide, by weight of the dentifrice composition.

7. The dentifrice composition according to claim 1 , wherein the compositions comprises from about 10% to about 50% of silica abrasive, by weight of the dentifrice composition.

8. The dentifrice composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises zinc.

9. The dentifrice composition of claim 8 , wherein the zinc comprises zinc oxide, zinc citrate, zinc phosphate, or mixtures thereof.

10. The dentifrice composition of claim 8 , wherein the zinc comprises zinc oxide and zinc citrate.

11. The dentifrice composition of claim 1 , wherein the dialkali metal pyrophosphate salt comprises disodium dihydrogen pyrophosphate.

12. The dentifrice composition of claim 1 , wherein the tetraalkali metal pyrophosphate salt comprises tetrasodium pyrophosphate, tetrapotassium pyrophosphate, or mixtures thereof.

13. A single-phase dentifrice composition, comprising:

a. stannous fluoride;

b. sodium lauryl sulfate;

c. polyphosphate selected from the group consisting of dialkali metal pyrophosphate salt, tetraalkali metal pyrophosphate salt, tripolyphosphate, and mixtures thereof;

d. carvone; and

e. zinc,

wherein the polyphosphate is the only source of polyphosphate in the dentifrice composition.

14. The dentifrice composition of claim 13 , wherein the zinc comprises zinc oxide, zinc citrate, zinc phosphate, or mixtures thereof.

15. The dentifrice composition of claim 13 , wherein the zinc comprises zinc oxide and zinc citrate.

16. The dentifrice compositions of claim 15 , wherein the polyphosphate comprises tripolyphosphate.

17. The dentifrice composition of claim 13 , wherein the dialkali metal pyrophosphate salt comprises disodium dihydrogen pyrophosphate.

18. The dentifrice composition of claim 13 , wherein the tetraalkali metal pyrophosphate salt comprises tetrasodium pyrophosphate, tetrapotassium pyrophosphate, or mixtures thereof.

19. The dentifrice composition of claim 13 , wherein the composition comprises cocamidopropyl betaine.

20. The dentifrice composition of claim 13 , wherein the composition comprises from about 2% to about 30% of the polyphosphate, by weight of the dentifrice composition.

21. The dentifrice composition of claim 13 , wherein the polyphosphate is selected from the group consisting of dialkali metal pyrophosphate salt, tetraalkali metal pyrophosphate salt, and mixtures thereof and the zinc comprises zinc phosphate.

22. The dentifrice composition of claim 13 , wherein the tetraalkali metal pyrophosphate salt comprises tetrasodium pyrophosphate.

23. The dentifrice composition of claim 22 , wherein the dentifrice composition comprises from about 2% to about 30% of the tetrasodium pyrophosphate.

24. The dentifrice composition of claim 23 , wherein the dentifrice composition comprises cocamidopropyl betaine.

25. The dentifrice composition of claim 24 , wherein the composition comprises saccharin.

26. The dentifrice composition of claim 25 , wherein the composition comprises from about 0.25% to about 5% of titanium dioxide, by weight of the dentifrice composition.
