Treatment of ischemia
A system, including methods and compositions, for treatment of ischemia.
1. A method of treating ischemia, comprising:
administering a therapeutically effective amount of a cystine knot peptide to an ischemic subject in order to reduce injury resulting from ischemia,
wherein the ischemia is caused by thrombosis, an embolism, atherosclerosis, hypertension, hemorrhage, an aneurysm, surgery, trauma, or medication, or wherein the ischemia is an ischemia-induced injury selected from the group consisting of ischemic myelopathy, ischemic optic neuropathy, ischemic colitis, coronary heart disease, cardiac heart disease, and stroke, and
wherein the cysteine knot peptide has an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO: 1, SEQ ID NO: 2, SEQ ID NO: 3, SEQ ID NO: 4 and SEQ ID NO: 5.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cysteine knot peptide is administered to a subject that has suffered a stroke.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of administering includes a step of administering the inhibitor nasally, intrathecally, and/or epidurally.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of administering is performed less than about one day, twelve hours, or six hours prior to initiation of treatment.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the ischemia is stroke and wherein the step of administering is performed less than about one day, twelve hours, or six hours prior to initiation of treatment.
