Abstract

Example systems and techniques for denervation, for example, renal denervation. In some examples, a processor determines one or more tissue characteristics of tissue proximate a target nerve and a blood vessel. The processor may generate, based on the one or more tissue characteristics, an estimated volume of influence of denervation therapy delivered by a therapy delivery device disposed within the blood vessel. The processor may generate a graphical user interface including a graphical representation of the tissue proximate the target nerve and the blood vessel and a graphical representation of the estimated volume of influence.

Claims (55)

a first therapy program having a first set of therapy parameter values, and

a second therapy program having a second set of therapy parameter values;

determining, by the processor, one or more tissue characteristics of tissue proximate a target nerve and a blood vessel of a patient;

after determining the plurality of therapy programs, determining, by the processor, a first estimated volume of influence of denervation therapy to be delivered by a therapy delivery device disposed within the blood vessel according to the first therapy program based on the one or more tissue characteristics;

after determining the plurality of therapy programs, determining, by the processor, a second estimated volume of influence of denervation therapy to be delivered by the therapy delivery device according to the second therapy program based on the one or more tissue characteristics; and

selecting, by the processor, the first therapy program or the second therapy program based on the first estimated volume of influence and the second volume of influence.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

controlling, by the processor, a therapy delivery device to deliver denervation therapy to the target nerve based on the selected first or second therapy program.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving user input that indicates a target volume of influence; and

determining or generating the first set of therapy parameter values of the first therapy program based on the target volume of influence.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, by the processor, a treatment location to delivery denervation therapy; and

delivering, using a therapy delivery device, the denervation therapy to the treatment location according to the selected first or second therapy program.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, by the processor, a treatment location to delivery denervation therapy; and

displaying, using a user interface, a recommended therapy regimen based on the treatment location and the selected first or second therapy program for denervation therapy delivery.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more tissue characteristics include one or more of electrical impedance, thermal conductivity, acoustic impedance, chemical diffusivity, optical transmittivity or density of tissue.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selected first or second therapy program results in lesioning of the target nerve and avoids lesioning of a predetermined adverse-effect region.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first set of therapy parameter values includes at least one of an electrical signal parameter, a thermal signal parameter, an ultrasound signal parameter, a microwave signal parameter, an optical parameter, or a chemical dosage parameter.

9. A system comprising:

a memory configured to store one or more tissue characteristics of tissue proximate a target nerve and a blood vessel of a patient; and

a processor coupled to the memory and configured to:

determine a plurality of therapy programs, the plurality of therapy programs including a first therapy program and a second therapy program;

after determining the plurality of therapy programs, determine a first estimated volume of influence of denervation therapy delivered by a therapy delivery device disposed within the blood vessel according to the first therapy program based on the one or more tissue characteristics;

after determining the plurality of therapy programs, determine a second estimated volume of influence of denervation therapy delivered by the therapy delivery device disposed within the blood vessel according to the second therapy program based on the one or more tissue characteristics;

select the first therapy program or the second therapy program based on the first estimated volume of influence and the second estimated volume of influence; and

control the therapy delivery device to deliver the denervation therapy to the patient based on the selected first or second therapy program.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the processor is configured to:

move the therapy delivery device to a predetermined location within the blood vessel based on the selected first or second therapy program.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the processor is configured to:

determine a treatment location to deliver denervation therapy; and

deliver, using the therapy delivery device, the denervation therapy to the treatment location based on the selected first or second therapy program.

12. The system of claim 9 , further comprising:

a display for presenting a therapy regimen,

wherein the processor is configured to:

determine a treatment location to delivery denervation therapy; and

present a recommended therapy regiment on the display.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the one or more tissue characteristics include one or more of electrical impedance, thermal conductivity, acoustic impedance, chemical diffusivity, optical transmittivity or density of tissue.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the delivered denervation therapy using the selected first or second therapy program results in lesioning of the target nerve and avoids lesioning of a predetermined adverse-effect region.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the first therapy program comprises a set of therapy parameter values that includes at least one of an electrical signal parameter, a thermal signal parameter, an ultrasound signal parameter, a microwave signal parameter, an optical parameter, or a chemical dosage parameter.

16. A method comprising:

determining, by the processor, a plurality of therapy programs;

determining, by a processor, one or more tissue characteristics of tissue proximate a target nerve and a blood vessel of a patient;

after determining the plurality of therapy programs, determining, by the processor and for each of the therapy programs of the plurality of therapy programs, an estimated volume of influence of denervation therapy to be delivered by a therapy delivery device according to the respective therapy program based on the one or more tissue characteristics;

selecting, by the processor, at least one therapy program of the plurality of therapy programs based on the estimated volumes of influence; and

controlling, by the processor, a therapy delivery device to deliver denervation therapy to the target nerve based on the selected at least one therapy program.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein each therapy program of the plurality of therapy programs has a respective set of therapy parameter values that includes at least one of an electrical signal parameter, a thermal signal parameter, an ultrasound signal parameter, a microwave signal parameter, an optical parameter, or a chemical dosage parameter.
