Abstract

Systems and methods comprise a gateway at a premises. The gateway is coupled to a remote system. An interface component is coupled to a processor of the gateway. The interface component comprises at least one module that interfaces and exchanges data with a processing component of a security system installed at a location. The processing component uses a proprietary protocol of the security system for processing data of the security system. The processor controls communications that comprise passing commands from the remote system to the security system, and passing event data of the security system to the remote system.

Claims (53)

1. A system comprising:

a gateway device located at a premises, wherein the gateway device is configured to send, to a device located external to the premises, data associated with a security system located at the premises; and

a computing device configured to:

communicate, via a wired connection, with a controller of the security system;

communicate, via a first wireless communication protocol, with the gateway device;

switch, based on a determination of a loss of power associated with the premises, to a first power mode associated with saving power;

receive, in the first power mode and via the wired connection with the controller of the security system, an indication of a premises event;

switch, based on the indication of the premises event, to a second power mode, wherein the second power mode is different than the first power mode; and

send, in the second power mode and to the device located external to the premises, via a second wireless communication protocol different than the first wireless communication protocol, data indicative of the premises event.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the wired connection comprises a serial connection.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the computing device is further configured to:

determine a loss of communication with the gateway device; and

send, based on the loss of communication with the gateway device and to the device located external to the premises, data indicative of the premises event.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the wired connection comprises a connection with a panel of the security system.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the wired connection comprises at least one of a RS-232 connection or a RS-485 connection.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the computing device is further configured to switch, based on sending the data, to the first power mode.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the computing device is further configured to: determine a power state associated with the security system; and switch, based on determining the power state, to the first power mode.

8. The system recited in claim 1 , wherein the first wireless communication protocol comprises an Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standard communication protocol, and wherein the second wireless communication protocol comprises a cellular communication protocol.

9. The system recited in claim 1 , wherein the determination of the loss of power associated with the premises comprises a determination that the security system has switched to a battery backup power supply.

10. The system recited in claim 1 , wherein the second power mode is associated with consumption of a higher level of power than the first power mode.

11. A method comprising:

communicating, by a computing device located at a premises and via a wired connection, with a controller of a security system located at the premises;

communicating, via a first wireless communication protocol, with a gateway device located at the premises, wherein the gateway device is configured to send, to a device located external to the premises, data associated with the security system;

switching, by the computing device and based on a determination of a loss of power associated with the premises, to a first power mode associated with saving power;

receiving, by the computing device in the first power mode and via the wired connection with the controller of the security system, an indication of a premises event;

switching, by the computing device and based on the indication of the premises event, to a second power mode, wherein the second power mode is different than the first power mode; and

sending, by the computing device in the second power mode and to the device located external to the premises, via a second wireless communication protocol different than the first wireless communication protocol, data indicative of the premises event.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the wired connection comprises a serial connection.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the method further comprises:

determining that the data indicative of the premises event was not sent to the gateway device; and

sending, at least based on the determination that the data indicative of the premises event was not sent to the gateway device, via the second wireless communication protocol, the data to the device located external to the premises.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the receiving the indication of the premises event via the wired connection comprises receiving the indication of the premises event from a panel of the security system.

15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising switching, based on sending the data, to the first power mode.

16. The method recited in claim 11 , wherein the first wireless communication protocol comprises an Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standard communication protocol, and wherein the second wireless communication protocol comprises a cellular communication protocol.

17. The method recited in claim 11 , wherein the determination of the loss of power associated with the premises comprises a determination that the security system has switched to a battery backup power supply.

18. The method recited in claim 11 , wherein the second power mode is associated with consumption of a higher level of power than the first power mode.

19. A computing device comprising:

one or more processors; and

memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the computing device to:

communicate, via a wired connection, with a controller of a security system located at a premises;

communicate, via a first wireless communication protocol, with a gateway device located at the premises, wherein the gateway device is configured to send, to a device located external to the premises, data associated with the security system;

switch, based on a determination of a loss of power associated with the premises, to a first power mode associated with saving power;

receive, in the first power mode and via the wired connection with the controller of the security, an indication of a premises event;

switch, based on the indication of the premises event, to a second power mode, wherein the second power mode is different than the first power mode; and

send, in the second power mode and to the device located external to the premises, via a second wireless communication protocol different from the first wireless communication protocol, data indicative of the premises event.

20. The computing device of claim 19 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the computing device to:

determine, in the second power mode, that the data indicative of the premises event was sent to the device located external to the premises; and

switch, based on determining that the data was sent to the device located external to the premises, to the first power mode.

21. The computing device of claim 20 , wherein the premises event is associated with an alarm triggered at the premises.

22. The computing device of claim 19 , wherein the wired connection comprises at least one of a RS-232 connection or a RS-485 connection.

23. The computing device recited in claim 19 , wherein the first wireless communication protocol comprises an Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standard communication protocol, and wherein the second wireless communication protocol comprises a cellular communication protocol.

24. The computing device recited in claim 19 , wherein the determination of the loss of power associated with the premises comprises a determination that the security system has switched to a battery backup power supply.

25. The computing device recited in claim 19 , wherein the second power mode is associated with consumption of a higher level of power than the first power mode.
