Abstract

A gas delivery conduit adapted for fluidly connecting to a respiratory gases delivery system in a high flow therapy system, the gas delivery conduit includes a first connector adapted for connecting to the respiratory gases delivery system, a second connector adapted for connecting to a fitting of a patient interface, tubing fluidly connecting the first connector to the second connector where the first connector has a gas inlet adapted to receive the supplied respiratory gas, one of electrical contacts and temperature contacts integrated into the first connector. The gas delivery conduit further can include a sensing conduit integrated into the gas delivery conduit, where the first connector of the gas delivery conduit is adapted to allow the user to couple the first connector with the respiratory gases delivery system in a single motion.

Claims (34)

1. A respiratory gases delivery system, system comprising:

a high flow therapy unit configured to generate a flow of respiratory gas to provide high flow therapy to a patient, wherein the high flow therapy unit comprises:

a housing;

a blower contained within the housing to generate the flow of respiratory gas;

a heater plate connected to the housing;

a water chamber configured to retain a volume of water and to be placed in contact with and to receive a transfer of heat from the heater plate, wherein heating of the water chamber causes the volume of water to be warmed and for humidification to be added to the flow of respiratory gas;

an outlet configured to supply the flow of respiratory gas with the added humidification;

a gas delivery conduit comprising:

a first connector adapted for connecting to the outlet of the high flow therapy unit;

a second connector adapted for connecting to a fitting of a non-sealing patient interface to deliver the high flow therapy to the patient; and

tubing fluidly connecting the first connector to the second connector;

wherein the first connector has a gas inlet adapted to receive the flow of respiratory gas with added humidification supplied by the high flow therapy unit; and

a microprocessor contained within the housing that is configured to control operation of the blower and the heater plate to (i) provide the high flow respiratory therapy to the patient and (ii) perform a drying cycle comprising the blower remaining active for a period of time after providing the high flow respiratory therapy to the patient.

2. The respiratory gas delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the first connector is adapted to allow coupling of the first connector with the outlet of the high flow therapy unit in a single motion.

3. The respiratory gas delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the first connector is adapted to allow coupling of the first connector with the outlet of the high flow therapy unit by moving the first connector in a direction along an axis of the gas inlet.

4. The respiratory gas delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the first connector is adapted to allow coupling of the first connector with the outlet of the high flow therapy unit in a predetermined orientation.

5. The respiratory gas delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the gas delivery conduit further comprises at least one temperature sensor.

6. The respiratory gas delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the gas delivery conduit further comprises a heating element.

7. The respiratory gas delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the first connector is adapted to allow coupling in the first connector with the outlet of the high flow therapy unit by moving the first connector in a single direction.

8. The respiratory gas delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the first connector is further adapted to couple with a receptacle of high flow therapy unit.

9. The respiratory gas delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the microprocessor is configured to perform the drying cycle until, at least, the gas delivery conduit is substantially dry.

10. The respiratory gas delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the gas delivery conduit further comprises one of electrical contacts and temperature contacts integrated into the first connector,

wherein the high flow therapy unit further comprises a mating socket on the housing that is configured to be electrically connected to one of the electrical contacts and the temperature contacts integrated into the first connector,

wherein the microprocessor is further configured to provide the high flow respiratory therapy based, at least in part, on signals received by the mating socket from the one of the electrical contacts and the temperature contacts.

11. The respiratory gas delivery system of claim 10 , wherein the electrical contacts are adapted to facilitate providing power to the first connector.

12. The respiratory gas delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the gas delivery conduit further comprises a sensing conduit integrated into the gas delivery conduit.

13. The respiratory gas delivery system of claim 12 , wherein the sensing conduit is adapted to facilitate monitoring one of pressure, pulse oximetry, carbon dioxide and oxygen.

14. The respiratory gas delivery system of claim 12 , wherein the sensing conduit is configured to couple with the outlet of high flow therapy unit.

15. The respiratory gas delivery system of claim 1 , further comprising an orientation feature adapted to allow the first connector to couple with the outlet of the high flow therapy unit in a predetermined orientation.

16. The respiratory gas delivery system of claim 15 , wherein the orientation feature is a flange portion of the first connector.

17. The respiratory gas delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the microprocessor is further configured to turn off the blower upon completion of the drying cycle.

18. The respiratory gas delivery system of claim 17 , wherein the microprocessor is further configured to turn off the heater plate upon completion of the drying cycle.

19. The respiratory gas delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the microprocessor is configured to receive a signal indicating that the high flow therapy to the patient has concluded and to initiate the drying cycle upon receipt of the signal.

20. The respiratory gas delivery system of claim 19 , wherein receipt of the signal corresponds to the gas delivery conduit being placed in a cradle to prevent the non-sealing patient interface from being used by the patient.
