Abstract

A surgical instrument includes a first jaw defining a channel, a second jaw including an anvil plate, a staple cartridge, and a drive beam. The staple cartridge is received in the channel and includes a sled, a knife blade, a plurality of staple pushers, and a plurality of staples. The sled is movable into engagement with the staple pushers to eject the staples from the staple cartridge. The knife blade is secured to the sled and is movable between raised and lowered positions.

Claims (32)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a first jaw comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and a channel extending from the proximal end to the distal end, the channel being configured to receive a staple cartridge;

a second jaw comprising an anvil plate having a plurality of staple forming pockets, the first jaw being movable relative to the second jaw between an open position and a closed position; and

a drive beam movable between the proximal end and the distal end of the first jaw and having a substantially I-shaped cross-sectional profile, the drive beam comprising a first strut, a second strut, and a support beam extending between and connecting the first strut and the second strut along a first axis, wherein the first strut protrudes from the support beam along a second axis that is substantially perpendicular to the first axis, wherein the second strut protrudes from the support beam along a third axis that is substantially perpendicular to the first axis, and wherein the first strut is configured to engage with the first jaw and the second strut is configured to engage with the second jaw to move the first jaw to the closed position and maintain a distance between the first jaw and the second jaw as the drive beam moves from the proximal end of the first jaw toward the distal end of the first jaw;

wherein the staple cartridge comprises a sled, a knife blade, and a plurality of staples and a slot defined therein, wherein the sled comprises a plurality of wedges and is configured to engage a plurality of staple pushers during movement of the sled toward the distal end of the first jaw,

wherein the slot is configured to receive the support beam of the drive beam,

wherein the knife blade and the sled are positioned substantially distally of the drive beam so that movement of the drive beam toward the distal end of the first jaw moves the knife blade and the sled toward the distal end of the first jaw, and wherein the knife blade is configured to move between a raised position and a lowered position, the knife blade secured to the sled by a pin that is received through an opening in the knife blade, the opening having a shape that corresponds to a shape of the pin.

2. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the knife blade in the lowered position is concealed within the sled.

3. The surgical instrument according to claim 2 , wherein the sled comprises a slit configured to house the knife blade in the lowered position.

4. The surgical instrument according to claim 2 , wherein a drive shaft extends through the bore of the drive beam.

5. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the knife blade in the raised position extends through the slot of the staple cartridge toward the anvil plate of the second jaw.

6. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the knife blade in the raised position is oriented so that the knife blade can cut tissue clamped between the first jaw and the second jaw upon movement of the drive beam toward the distal end of the first jaw.

7. The surgical instrument according to claim 6 , wherein the knife blade in the lowered position is oriented so that the knife blade cannot cut tissue clamped between the first jaw and the second jaw.

8. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the knife blade is configured to move between the raised position and the lowered position in response to movement of the drive beam.

9. The surgical instrument according to claim 8 , wherein the support beam of the drive beam is configured to contact an abutment surface of the knife blade during movement of the drive beam toward the distal end of the first jaw.

10. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the knife blade is pivotally coupled to the sled by a pin, and wherein the knife blade is configured to move between the raised position and the lowered position by pivoting about the pin.

11. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the drive beam comprises a bore.

The surgical instrument to claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of wedges of the sled comprise angled leading edges, and wherein the angled leading edges are configured to contact the staple pushers during movement of the sled toward the distal end of the first jaw and to cause the staple pushers to drive staples from the staple cartridge toward the anvil plate of the second jaw.

13. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the sled is positioned at least partially distal to the knife blade, and wherein the knife blade and the sled are positioned at least partially distal to the drive beam.

14. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the staple cartridge has a cartridge body defining at least two rows of staple retaining slots, wherein the slot is disposed between the rows of staple retaining slots.

15. The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , wherein the staple cartridge is removable after movement of the drive beam toward the distal end of the first jaw.

The surgical instrument according to claim 1 , further comprising a shaft extending along a longitudinal axis from the proximal end of the first jaw and or a proximal end of the second jaw, wherein the first jaw and the second jaw are configured to move between a linear configuration that is substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the shaft and an angled configuration that is pitched relative to the longitudinal axis of the shaft.

17. The surgical instrument according to claim 16 , wherein the first jaw and/or the second jaw is configured to rotate about the longitudinal axis of the shaft.

18. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a first jaw comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and a channel extending from the proximal end to the distal end, the channel being configured to receive a staple cartridge;

a second jaw comprising an anvil plate having a plurality of staple forming pockets, the first jaw being movable relative to the second jaw between an open position and a closed position; and

a drive beam movable between the proximal end and the distal end of the first jaw and having a substantially I-shaped cross-sectional profile, the drive beam comprising a first strut, a second strut, and a support beam extending between and connecting the first strut and the second strut along a first axis, wherein the first strut protrudes from the support beam along a second axis that is substantially perpendicular to the first axis, wherein the second strut protrudes from the support beam along a third axis that is substantially perpendicular to the first axis, and wherein the first strut is configured to engage with the first jaw and the second strut is configured to engage with the second jaw to move the first jaw to the closed position and maintain a distance between the first jaw and the second jaw as the drive beam moves from the proximal end of the first jaw toward the distal end of the first jaw;

wherein the staple cartridge comprises a sled, a knife blade, and a plurality of staples and a slot defined therein, wherein the sled comprises a plurality of wedges and is configured to engage a plurality of staple pushers during movement of the sled toward the distal end of the first jaw,

wherein the slot is configured to receive the support beam of the drive beam,

wherein the knife blade and the sled are positioned substantially distally of the drive beam so that movement of the drive beam toward the distal end of the first jaw moves the knife blade and the sled toward the distal end of the first jaw, and wherein the knife blade is configured to move between a raised position and a lowered position, wherein the sled includes a slit defined by a closed bottom wall, the knife blade positioned above the closed bottom wall in the raised position and the lowered position.

19. The surgical instrument according to claim 18 , wherein the knife blade in the lowered position is concealed within the sled.

20. The surgical instrument according to claim 18 , wherein the knife blade in the raised position extends through the slot of the staple cartridge toward the anvil plate of the second jaw.
