Abstract

In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, an optical coherence tomography-based ophthalmic testing center system includes an optical coherence tomography instrument comprising an eyepiece for receiving at least one eye of a user or subject; a light source that outputs light that is directed through the eyepiece into the user's or subject's eye, an interferometer configured to produce optical interference using light reflected from the user's/subject's eye, an optical detector disposed so as to detect said optical interference; and a processing unit coupled to the detector. The ophthalmic testing center system can be configured to perform a multitude of self-administered functional and/or structural ophthalmic tests and output the test data.

Claims (37)

1. An optical coherence tomography instrument comprising:

an eyepiece;

a target display visible through the eyepiece;

a light source that outputs light that is directed through the eyepiece;

a beam splitter configured to combine light from two light paths;

an interferometer configured to produce optical interference using light reflected from an eye of a user;

an optical detector disposed so as to detect the optical interference; and

a processor configured to produce features on the target display of varying size to test the user's visual acuity,

wherein the processor is configured to output results of the visual acuity test.

2. The optical coherence tomography instrument of claim 1 , wherein the features are alphanumeric symbols.

3. The optical coherence tomography instrument of claim 2 , wherein the alphanumeric symbols vary in contrast and/or color.

4. The optical coherence tomography instrument of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to conduct a color vision test.

5. The optical coherence tomography instrument of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to conduct a visual field test.

6. The optical coherence tomography instrument of claim 1 , wherein the instrument is configured to obtain a first image of a region of the eye of the user at a first time period and a second image of the region of the eye of the user at a second time period.

7. The optical coherence tomography instrument of claim 6 , wherein the processor is configured to perform tracking of at least one structural element of the eye between the first and second images.

8. The optical coherence tomography instrument of claim 7 , wherein the processor is configured to perform at least one ophthalmic functional test based on the tracking.

9. The optical coherence tomography instrument of claim 1 , wherein the beam splitter is configured to combine light from the target display and the light source.

10. The optical coherence tomography instrument of claim 1 , wherein the beam splitter is configured to combine light from a reference arm and a sample arm.

11. An optical coherence tomography instrument comprising:

an eyepiece;

a target display visible through the eyepiece;

a light source that outputs light that is directed through the eyepiece;

an interferometer configured to produce optical interference using light reflected from an eye of a user;

an optical detector disposed so as to detect the optical interference;

a processor configured to produce features on the target display of varying size to test the user's visual acuity; and

an adjustable optical element configured to focus the features on a retina;

wherein the optical coherence tomography instrument is configured to obtain an optical coherence tomography scan of a region of the eye,

wherein the processor is configured to output results of the visual acuity test.

12. The optical coherence tomography instrument of claim 11 , wherein the features are alphanumeric symbols.

13. The optical coherence tomography instrument of claim 11 , wherein the region of the eye is an anterior eye region.

14. The optical coherence tomography instrument of claim 13 , wherein the optical coherence tomography instrument is configured to obtain a second optical coherence tomography scan of the retina.

15. The optical coherence tomography instrument of claim 14 , wherein the anterior eye region comprises a cornea.

16. The optical coherence tomography instrument of claim 11 , wherein the processor is further configured to conduct a corneal topography test based on the optical coherence tomography scan.

17. The optical coherence tomography instrument of claim 11 , wherein the processor is further configured to conduct a corneal pachymetry test based on the optical coherence tomography scan.

18. The optical coherence tomography instrument of claim 11 , the optical coherence tomography instrument configured to enable the user to self-administer the optical coherence tomography scan.

19. The optical coherence tomography instrument of claim 11 , wherein the processor is further configured to conduct a pupillometry test based on the optical coherence tomography scan.

20. The optical coherence tomography instrument of claim 11 , wherein the processor is further configured to conduct an extraocular motility test based on the optical coherence tomography scan.
