Abstract

An orthodontic appliance may include an archwire and multiple orthodontic brackets. The archwire may fit within a human mouth and contain multiple male connectors. Each orthodontic bracket may have a configuration that facilitates attaching the orthodontic bracket to a single tooth. Each orthodontic bracket may allow one of the male connectors to be locked into the orthodontic bracket with a snapping action. The male connector may be unable to slide with respect to the orthodontic bracket after being locked in the orthodontic bracket. A manual unlocking action may allow the male connector to disengage from the orthodontic bracket.

Claims (27)

1. An orthodontic appliance comprising:

an archform having a configuration that fits within a human mouth and configured to follow a dental arch segment, the archform comprising:

multiple bracket connectors corresponding to each and every tooth of the dental arch segment, each of the multiple bracket connectors comprising a distal portion, a mesial portion, and an occlusal portion joining the distal portion and the mesial portion,

wherein the distal portion, the mesial portion, and the occlusal portion cooperate to define at least a portion of an opening through the bracket connector; and

multiple interproximal loops formed as a unitary continuous member with the multiple bracket connectors, the multiple interproximal loops corresponding to each and every interdental space of the dental arch segment, each interproximal loop of the multiple interproximal loops disposed between adjacent bracket connectors of the multiple bracket connectors and comprising a first portion and a second portion, the first portion directly connected to and extending gingivally and not occlusally from one bracket connector of the adjacent bracket connectors to a gingival point along the archform, and the second portion extending occlusally and not gingivally from the first portion at the gingival point to the other bracket connector of the adjacent bracket connectors such that each interproximal loop is open in an occlusal direction;

wherein the archform is custom designed and comprises a default position that is based on an expected alignment of the dental arch segment, created from a virtual set-up of the dental arch segment from images of the dental arch segment, and configured to move the dental arch segment toward the expected alignment of the dental arch segment; and

multiple orthodontic brackets, each having a deflectable member comprising a first end coupled to a base of the orthodontic bracket and a second end that is configured to move in a first direction to receive one of the multiple bracket connectors and to move in a second direction, opposite the first direction, to be placed in the opening of the one of the multiple bracket connectors to secure the one of the multiple bracket connectors to the orthodontic bracket such that the one of the multiple bracket connectors couples forces with the orthodontic bracket in three dimensions and is unable to slide with respect to the orthodontic bracket, wherein the archform, including the multiple interproximal loops, is configured to be deflected from the default position to couple the multiple bracket connectors to the multiple orthodontic brackets to move the dental arch segment toward the expected alignment of the dental arch segment by forces imparted by the deflected multiple interproximal loops as the archform moves back toward the default position.

2. The orthodontic appliance of claim 1 , wherein each bracket connector of the multiple bracket connectors is a male loop.

3. The orthodontic appliance of claim 2 , wherein each male loop is an integral portion of the archform.

4. The orthodontic appliance of claim 1 , wherein one interproximal loop of the multiple interproximal loops is disposed between each neighboring set of bracket connectors of the multiple bracket connectors.

5. The orthodontic appliance of claim 1 , wherein the archform comprises a straight interproximal segment, the straight interproximal segment disposed between other adjacent bracket connectors of the multiple bracket connectors.

6. The orthodontic appliance of claim 1 , wherein the archform is a single continuous wire.

7. The orthodontic appliance of claim 1 , wherein the multiple bracket connectors are oriented to allow the archform to be inserted into the multiple orthodontic brackets from a gingival direction.

8. The orthodontic appliance of claim 1 , wherein the archform comprises a shape memory alloy.

9. The orthodontic appliance of claim 1 , wherein each of the multiple orthodontic brackets are configured to allow one of the multiple bracket connectors to be locked into the orthodontic bracket with a snapping action.

10. The orthodontic appliance of claim 9 , wherein each of the multiple orthodontic brackets are configured to allow one of the multiple bracket connectors to be unlocked from the orthodontic bracket by a manual unlocking action that allows the one of the multiple bracket connectors to disengage from the orthodontic bracket.

11. The orthodontic appliance of claim 1 , wherein an orthodontic force for moving teeth of the dental arch segment is provided by the archform being elastically deflected when the multiple bracket connectors are coupled to the multiple orthodontic brackets.

12. The orthodontic appliance of claim 1 , wherein each of the multiple interproximal loops curve away from and back to a longitudinal axis of the archform without extending on an occlusal side of the longitudinal axis.

13. The orthodontic appliance of claim 12 , wherein each of the multiple interproximal loops define a gap along the longitudinal axis providing access into each of the multiple interproximal loops from an occlusal direction.

14. The orthodontic appliance of claim 1 , wherein the multiple interproximal loops are configured to apply forces to move teeth of the dental arch segment by being elastically deflected from the default position when the multiple bracket connectors are coupled to the multiple orthodontic brackets and then return toward the default position.

15. An orthodontic appliance configured to be disposed on a lingual side of a patient's teeth, the orthodontic appliance comprising:

an archform having a configuration that fits within a human mouth and configured to follow a dental arch segment, the archform comprising:

multiple bracket connectors corresponding to each and every tooth of the dental arch segment; and

multiple interproximal loops formed as a unitary continuous member with the multiple bracket connectors, the multiple interproximal loops corresponding to each and every interdental space of the dental arch segment, each interproximal loop of the multiple interproximal loops disposed between adjacent bracket connectors of the multiple bracket connectors and comprising a first portion and a second portion, the first portion connected to and extending gingivally and not occlusally from one bracket connector of the adjacent bracket connectors to a gingival position along the archform, and the second portion extending occlusally and not gingivally from the first portion at the gingival position to the other bracket connector of the adjacent bracket connectors such that each interproximal loop is open in an occlusal direction;

wherein the archform is custom designed and comprises a default position that is based on an expected alignment of the dental arch segment, created from a virtual set-up of the dental arch segment from images of the dental arch segment, and configured to move the dental arch segment toward the expected alignment of the dental arch segment; and

multiple orthodontic brackets, each having a deflectable member coupled at one end to a base portion of the orthodontic bracket and a free end that is configured to move in a first direction to receive one of the multiple bracket connectors and to move in a second direction, opposite the first direction, to secure the one of the multiple bracket connectors to the orthodontic bracket such that the one of the multiple bracket connectors couples forces with the orthodontic bracket in three dimensions and is unable to slide with respect to the orthodontic bracket, wherein the archform, including the multiple interproximal loops, is configured to be deflected from the default position to couple the multiple bracket connectors to the multiple orthodontic brackets to move the dental arch segment toward the expected alignment of the dental arch segment by forces imparted by the deflected multiple interproximal loops as the archform moves back toward the default position.

16. The orthodontic appliance of claim 1 , wherein a longitudinal dimension of each of the distal portion and the mesial portion extends in a gingival-occlusal direction.
